James Sherk, a labor economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation , said many legislators do not want to see the cost of benefits add to the nation’s mounting debt. Many also feel that the benefits have grown too generous and should be cut back. Nearly half of all states currently offer unemployment benefits that can last nearly two years. Sherk said benefits should be pared back to a reasonable level as a way to encourage people to take jobs they would have otherwise shunned because they were unfamiliar, paid less, or were below their qualifications. Such a move would also lower the unemployment rate by one-half a percent, he said. Should unemployment benefits be extended?

AWhat to do about growing numbers of neglected and abandoned horses in the US is an ethical conundrum that Congress and President Obama quietly addressed this month via a spending bill: bring back the slaughterhouses. Department of Agriculture bill, signed into law Nov. 18, reinstates federal funding for USDA inspection of horse meat intended for human consumption, which Congress had withheld since 2006. That de facto ban on horse slaughter has now come to an end, to the outrage of the animal rights community, amid reports that US horse owners were simply shipping their animals to Mexico and Canada for slaughter and processing. Should this be making a comeback?
