  3. Are we Getting Places on our Own?

    Audio

    09/28/2011

Elizabeth Warren's widely discussed comments on how nobody gets rich by themselves, and thus those who do get rich must give back as part of the social contract, has gone so viral that now President Obama is starting to echo it. What’s great about this country is that any of these young people here, if they’ve got a good idea, if they go out there and they’re willing to work hard, they can start a business, they can create value, great products, great services. They can make millions, make billions. That’s great. That’s what America is all about. Anybody can make it if they try. But what’s also a quintessentially American idea is that those of us who’ve done well should pay our fair share to contribute to the upkeep of the nation that made our success possible because nobody -- nobody did well on their own. A teacher somewhere helped to give you the skills to succeed. Do some people do good on their own?

After the 11 a.m. ceremony, which will be open strictly to family members of victims, the memorial will officially open to the public. 5. Republican Smackdown

    Audio

    09/08/2011

The biggest mystery about the Reagan Library/MSNBC debate last night is why the Reagan Library allowed MSNBC to be the co-sponsor. Brian Williams seems to have been drinking liberally of the MSNBC kool-aid; many of his questions were so steeped in liberal distaste for Republican positions that it was embarrassing. There was no questioning about the nation’s fiscal position, aside from asking whether Rick Perry would abjure $1 of tax increases in return for $10 of spending cuts, very little on the macroeconomy and very little on foreign and defense policy. Howie watched every minute.
