| Description: | Jumping the Democrat Party line and joining the ranks of unenrolled voters, Treasurer Timothy Cahill is positioned to take on Gov. Deval Patrick without a primary battle in which the sitting governor would enjoy the power of incumbency. We spoke with Treasurer Cahill about this move. |
" And now they're stunned him. Norma Holloway and cars show us all right Michael Jackson. This --"
" Marvelous I am going to err on the side of him not really some of knowing your music are caring more. Just want to be out there or having something the same so -- check out is just send me I can't say domestic came. We can't say -- you CEO."
" Or not he was convicted of a precise crime by his own admission also -- isn't settled horses that he settled against them. This mission he acted very very inappropriately."
" What was your reaction to the -- uncovered there is I. Christie's has been more fun watching men then chattering hands on and on TV people who really hate her guts are deeply disappointed in her decision they're talking about her like an ex girlfriends. They're totally over that they just can't stop talking about -- no -- bomber."
" Only two I. Now how -- Lawrence. Are you -- touch me Hamas powered card WRKO radio networks."
" The difference a couple of hours things cleared out to be a nice night for ball -- my father was going to be rained out a couple of hours ago. But we're broadcasting here from -- more square Fenway Park we're at the eastern standard right on com have. There we broadcast from eastern standard every Tuesday before the Red Sox play a home game. The show is brought to tonight by giant the last the official auto glass replacement company of the Boston Red Sox called a number -- more new englanders trust 1854. -- Also brought to you by chock full of nuts coffee. And we will be leaving -- in Boston tonight at six when he fives which you can continue to listen to the show until 7 o'clock tonight if if you listen to a -- RKO. On -- the VCR and AM 8:30 -- talk for central New England. So will argue to those call letters and frequency again before we leap year. -- until we leave the air and in Boston -- around 623 or thereabouts is Tim Kay hill to state treasurer and receiver general. Of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts we told you last night that he was -- clinic to leave the Democratic Party. -- and he is going to re register in his hometown the city of Wednesday as soon as on the roll calls of independent. Tim first of all let me welcome you to be plurality if not the majority of Massachusetts voters. Gordon -- are registered members of any party."
" Thank you very much I I I. I welcome the introduction and I look forward to log happy like."
" Have you have you made the movie out today are you gonna do it later on in the week."
" Now when I'm. One day this week he's -- can figure out maybe tomorrow morning but if not carefully by Friday so it was a bit of a crazy day. You can imagine -- I don't know what tomorrow is gonna break but I did talk to the Clark over Quinn leads and he last week and he gave you sort of the instructions it's pretty simple I have to get certified by the secretary of state so the two step process. And hopefully that works so well will be well."
" I would I I was Reverend -- column earlier today and I mentioned. So broke something about -- that Tim -- that. Is becoming the -- pay when the Massachusetts."
" She's got I hope we get a better job that she didn't terrorize her exit speech but. I can -- some -- her pain no terms in terms of the party stuff and in some of those sort of immediate but I think she's gotten it. Got a lot worse than being in the profile. That that she's taken over last -- idea. It's too bad way that that that's what it's come to and if that question -- because of what what was going -- the gambling stuff that's that's shame but. To top this is how you know if you get a dish it out -- the bill would take it when it comes your way and and and I hopefully am prepared for what's gonna come my way."
" Do you think do you think you've been unfairly treated."
" Now I don't think so I think it's not. Some of the media coverage here over the last six months -- sort of ratcheted up my. Criticism of the governor -- just -- not finished our third I would like we have literally get out sort of our site out. It in terms of sort of getting our defense or the reasons why we did things but I overall. I mean it's the business sure and and it would be used JavaScript is to push in the -- incident to make you defend what you wanna do and and try to catch you and something's so it's. You know he you have to be prepared for a she. Would've thought she was more prepared for -- having been governor but again it's big difference for the small state. It's very remote like Alaska verses you know those used to discuss here and in Washington. I I honestly think being in Boston and being part of this sort of the political scene is is. It is a good you know sort of see you you have to learn if you can -- you -- really early on and it's it's it's the big leagues in a lot of ways."
" I pretty suggested today and I got to put this in my column that may be what may be one reason why you were doing this so worldly his world we're in kind of a a dead zone for politics album in the budget's been passed everybody has been talking about Michael Jackson in the crappy weather and one reason I heard speculated -- I put in my car I gotta put in my column for tomorrow is may -- your trying to force Charlie Baker. Out of the out of the race and you know you're gonna keep him on the sidelines and then it'll just -- you when Chris the end the ball. The end it's in the fall of next year end though you might have a pretty good shot."
" Well I mean that that's not the strategy is it that the outcome then. It were smarter than we think we are. Qatar he's obviously very formidable -- and I realized that. We match up very much the same which means we could negate each other and and right you could make it will definitely make my road harder he's in the race. But I didn't make my decision. Based on who is and who isn't in the race as I've never -- from the beginning that's not gonna ha that's a can be how I decide. So these futuristic speculation because it's news to me. Bet that that this may keep him I'll put you know I mean he's got to make his own decision. But you're putting that doesn't really serious dent it it's you're not going to be also he's not gonna be okay Republicans are gonna be able to run. With -- in the race says I'm not a Democrat. And and that is gonna make it more difficult for them I I think in some ways and and and maybe give me any damage to will not make."
" You know the ball the ball has gotten and at that I maybe this is inside baseball we should be talking about issues but. The fact is the -- got 55% of the vote in 2006 that's obviously his high watermark he's never gonna give -- committee were near that. But if there's three if it's a three person race. All he needs is 35%."
" No you know I mean -- that's what I call -- not without risk. And any any could you know we keep it could be unintended consequences that's why haven't made my final decision yet because I wanna make sure. They have not just gonna be a spoiler in this race. That would that would that they would put it together."
" But why would you why would you leave the democratic I mean I assume if you didn't run for governor -- run run for treasurer. Forget why I mean why don't you want that why would you wanna run as an independent for treasurer when you could have a pretty much of a free ride is a Democrat."
" Well it is he. It's not about that Ali is he the first concern frustration level that I've been feeling for the last year or maybe even longer boat were hit the party and criticizing my own party. I think when you're in the party -- far less favorably obviously -- that we number Matthews over the last two years about how welcome Miami. You know it's just -- it's the way I have always been opposed felt that I'm more of an independent and I am a Democrat or Republican. I've never really fit in so it's more about sort of what and where I feel comfortable where I can give the best kind of leadership. It's not about trying to position myself I mean this makes it less likely. That I would run for reelection I'm kind of putting myself out there and if I can put it together credible race. I'll put a team together and and feel like I can raise the kind of money that would make me. A real candidate not just the spoiler. Stabbed him in world will will duke it out. What --"
" But we -- you know you -- Christie obviously didn't have a statewide. Office for eight years like you have. But Christie has spent six million bucks. The 2006 you know these numbers -- the I'm sure you've gone over as finance reports that he gets 7% of the vote. I mean this is not no one Ross Perot was there is the high water mark for an independent he got he got what 20% which is again the long way from 35%."
" The good religion usually your EQ five elections state and quad. In that you have to really do grassroots work you can't just sit up in an office. And put -- commercial. Then how much money spent and -- like little -- you can you know you can just spent people under the ground. You gotta add to it -- with a broad -- Support. He got to have grassroots support your work really hard I don't. All around stated that she's not a lot of experience with that I never spent a lot of time working the democratic town committee because they don't really. I've never really got a whole lot premier -- for virtually any other successful candidate so. I would do whatever all of these guys worked really hard I think I've got a statewide name. At a party got an organization that I think in three million dollars in the bank which is which you could damage. But we'll see how it played out again I haven't really figured it all out. But I do think this is that you need in our country's history and the Democratic Party was more to collapse. And with big government is is really starting this -- almost awful all forms of life its business and I'm not comfortable with that had never been comfortable with Garrett and I don't wanna see it happen here in the state of Massachusetts. So what -- what is your biggest what what what what is your biggest problem with Deval Patrick as governor. The fact that he didn't -- the last two years is as default -- immediately to tax increase he tries to solve a budgetary problem. I mean the big debate the issue I would you know could you talk about a lot was not which taxes we not whether or not will raise taxes but which ones we're gonna race. And that's an argument that I've been arguing against the railing against for the last six months nine months however what had been sort of pointing it out and that's the wrong debate that we should be having in the middle of a recession. And an -- but that there is obviously the point that you have to be somewhat successful in in getting enough people's support saying not just easily overridden. And that's it's never been done before -- to keep your rhetoric but Republicans that you know support the building. Seems to be easy -- Democrat does it get past these tax raises with enough votes. And maybe it's time to get an independent who could work both sides of the aisle. It's a crap together we. Something to do to make your decision feel like more like the -- exactly nearly nine so at least you could threaten them with a veto that can be sustained."
" But he had a part he had a party. I mean he had the Republican votes to sustain the veto in the Senate."
" Right -- I'm not I'd never thought it was gonna be easy. And at the end of the day I remember this are you and it really 2002. And I stayed in the race what might Kato's in the -- that he wants that I had didn't have a so what Jason how -- Aramis thinking to myself what it's all done this is that we had put up commercials together and I knew that we got a message that was gonna resonate. That we got enough money to do it and I said to myself. Really go really smart this is all over -- really doubt that it doesn't work people going to be seeing what you think it. And I put myself kind of back and acquisition would the end of the day a year and a half from now I run people it doesn't work help people that say. You know we think you gave up a good job seat position."
" That's plug in -- if you talk to Shannon O'Brien about this. I have I have not I haven't talked really -- you for that matter to me you know this has been tried before and I don't. I think you know I think they would tell you that being treasurer is probably one of these jobs that you don't appreciate until you don't have it anymore."
" Now I write speeches stressing I appreciate -- more like Joe Malone I have to haven't served two terms. It's you know at least in my mind it's -- can move up or move out and mean panelists it's different right vote that blocked from -- Leon. As much as I do love the job. I I I I certainly spoken out about the challenges that face doesn't haven't been successful in getting my ways -- so. It may take me get to the next level would be hopefully more successful at least have a bigger voice in big bully pulpit. Not but it the end of the day we'll we'll see you need to think about running. For governor from try to -- is regardless would be running from as an independent it's hard to elect illustrator. For me -- have -- that it has been successfully got his whole lot."
" But let's take a few calls for ten K notably state treasurer and died just gonna register who's gonna re register is on enroll. Then he's probably gonna run for governor in when he had Dave you're next with how we cards Tim -- go ahead --"
" A good evening gentlemen thank you very much okay. As good as a fellow on enrollees. Mr. scale like let's just and thank you for having. Courage to speak out vociferously against an outrageous act as priests and regardless what you decide do I hope you continue to do things like that. There's plenty of grist for the mill it seems to me with this administration including programs to need to be eliminated. An and an ever expanding payroll. And just a bit general disregard for the the welfare of the taxpayer thanks very much appreciate your time. We welcome -- are -- here all happen."
" I did pretty good. Yeah I think he's going into your right to -- he's in your queue up John your next with Howie Carr and Tim Cahill go ahead John."
" Thank them and how it's gonna -- he's always been pushing independent all because for years. Hey can I wanna congratulate you and welcome you. -- this is it's it's it's really basically what you're doing here at home brutal change all that. In this state and I'd like to offer -- help him and I think I've got caught in that -- left -- message -- In if if it's always this -- just because you can't the -- everybody to vote actually trying to -- organization that this company could really happen."
" Yeah it is not just about me and I know that he can't beat. All bought me. Or does it work and if it's gotta be building a movement. And making it more than a Bosnian and sort of putting all of stuff. But the pieces that make an independent a true independent and different from -- the Democrat and independent quote or or Republican in -- Independent quality people could see through that so I agree that you need to really. I'll put the pieces together and and make it more movement than an actual political campaign. And I think this did you know there are hundreds of thousands of people millions of people out is that yet. Our our -- consider themselves independent and and are simply looking for choice and the fact that no offense success we have maybe maybe point what do the candidates have in the actual."
" Party they run support as your as your daughter to a with a slogan for you. There's not yet not yet but we're whereas. We'll -- we're rolling over onto -- so I don't have to tell you who won that campaign for you to I do. We know one at a campaign he's going to college huge -- have to get it before you go. Okay thanks for the call John Bob your next with Howie Carr and state Treasurer Tim Cahill go ahead Bob."
" Oh man how -- yeah. Good how we. Number why I have. -- Politically well you'll."
" You're breaking up Bob sorry about that wee -- we going to break it get a couple more calls all your next with Howie Carr and Tim Cahill go ahead Paul."
" Great guy Prado and today good good. I got -- how -- are absolutely. You know I think he got a lot of a lot of lot of guts to. I'd leave the democratic body go to the independent party. On enrolled -- Democrat but I'm always one well -- consider by the candidates are you talked about the last campaign and I was actually. Great supporter of Steve Murphy. Then died -- impressed me very much fight yet they can -- field. Pretty near you know pretty well thin down my -- slowly. You decide to do it I will definitely run. You know. History does strongly in your sport so I think about it and I don't know you're making the decision now on how we joke but."
" I definitely decisions made Paul always like gonna tell us. Well it decision going to edit that we've made incredible -- their -- because. I'm gonna need. Republican and Democrat. Is it fact that for the passengers delegated but it's independent -- especially if with the it's gonna create great reporter great whatever it turned out beat -- got a little yellow -- leaving the party but that did. Nor do we got a break but thanks for being aware this tonight Tim will have you on again see at WCR and AM 8:30 -- how we car. Save money and help the environment I imagine if everybody did just."
