| Description: | Howie speaks with former New Hampshire Governor and White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu about the state of the republican party in the granite state as Sen. Judd Gregg(R-NH) withdraws his name for Commerce Secretary. |
" And -- wrote down on employer certainly anger wrote that out -- I might pick a lot."
" Over here Sam took out from under the desk just a nice peanut par four. Okay 18774694322. Joining us now on the line this former New Hampshire governor John Sununu. And as you know he the it was a -- pop aid to two president George HW bush bush 41. And he is the father of other former senator John Sununu and it's a pleasure to have you -- here on the how -- car show governor scenario."
" that you outlined. This. Actually if you want to say something about the koala bears being rescued from the fires caused by the greed and Australia for this is your moment -- appreciate it applied dropped a Salmonella before. How are you today -- very good governor Sununu lay had -- thanks for being with us on the show and it's really. Breath hating -- always have. You'll always have the youngsters -- go to the you know what I'm the original and like Coca-Cola they -- people for everybody is much better."
" Well I we're glad to have you on the show our governor Sununu and especially on the -- it's turned out well today he it's very newsworthy what's going on in New Hampshire among New Hampshire Republicans. What do you know about the Judd -- decision to turn down the job of commerce secretary."
" Jack just put out a statement I guess he felt. More and more. Conflict of philosophy and it. He used two examples that they would not the only reasons but the problems associated with dispenses. That came up but certainly. Knowing judge fiscal philosophy there were big problems on the stimulus package. The non stimulus stimulus package and so on I think -- It's finally dawned on them that that that this wasn't going to work I was I was frankly a little bit surprised at the beginning. When he did say yes so I'm not that surprised that these -- else."
" But I you know I'm I'm disappointed I must say that he's not going to seek reelection because I think you know there's as much public to see your son back in the Senate I think that -- Judd would have been a very strong Canada true."
" This is great he was a good senator for New Hampshire the senator from new England and good for the country. And but I do understand. Eight catches up -- we wake up in the morning and the ball in space stay in bed in the body's decision got to get out and and so there's a little bit of age factor in there he is sixty -- obviously in good shape but there are other things aren't sure what to do. The last 35 years of his life so."
" Now you're you're you're on here because you're you're sort of leading the drive to -- one of the people leading the drive to reinvigorate the New Hampshire Republican Party."
" Yeah I went back to be chairman of the state Republican Party I guess no governor has ever done that. Former governor has ever done that but but New Hampshire is a special state and that. And we have got done as a party what we should be doing the Democrats that very good at winning elections they're still terrible at governing in managing but they got very good at winning elections. And to some extent a little bit those worth of it was our fault we were. But a little bit asleep at the switch and then we did not do good job of defining the difference between the two bodies and we suffer that the ballot box or want to trying come back and fix things so. We can save the state of New Hampshire from becoming another clone of Massachusetts."
" Well let me let me ask you directly -- be asking yourself if you were on the show is is he a candidate for Judd -- seed in the 2010 against holds."
" How are you probably have a better chance of finding out that I want the sex stuff. I think John -- I think he's been officially out of this and that about five weeks and he's certainly trying to decide what to do with the next couple of years. The only advice I gave him was the -- that then yes slowly. Easy to get a couple of things he is doing he's. Certainly. Busy little bit as a member of the five person TARP oversight board that that is."
" And boy that'll keep them busy I think."
" Well that's sort of a part time but -- I think he watched -- just take a couple of months at least 234 months. Decompress and make a decision. Not in haste but was a little bit up but I think. I think you have to think she is in the house and six years in the Senate these deserves a little decompression times so I'm not pressing them. I'm not pressing either as a father -- my pressing as chairman of the state Republican Party. To probably make up his mind around June July August."
" Run John run will you pass that onto I would tell."
" That you said that look a lot of people -- really would love to see him run. And it's not just parental pride when I say it was a good candidates. He takes after his mother so those -- the best quality perhaps. And but he he really does have to make a decision that's good for himself his family as well as good for the statement."
" You know -- and we want to talk about the future of the message at the at New Hampshire choose me Republican Party. And I will take some calls."
" here -- I am here to talk about what every you'd like to."
" 18774694322. But I have to ask you about one thing a couple of times I saw you -- CNBC before the election -- as you know -- be on in the morning and and I would receive a poll -- showing that your son was down by ES accelerate points and you know -- I thought he was ahead until the economy started melting down. And you you always seem so calm and collected and I kept thinking to myself I. I don't know I think I'd just be showing a lot -- where my emotions on my sleeve of what are my kids were seven. This kind of problem you know within insurer is not not a problem that he brought on himself just happen to be standing on the beach win of the the tidal wave came man."
" You're right there was the -- it was like trying to move the tide back with a bulldozer. But look. This didn't believe and I think I could stay calm is that I realized that wasn't the end of the world -- one way or the other I frankly thought he was going to win until. Until the market had that we collapse. Three weeks before the election. And that's what I really thought that that there was a serious chance that he may not. And it got worse and worse you know as the market just drifted down right all the Republicans across the country and and going into election night. I think we all had a sense that that this was not going to be you Republican night. But but he certainly employable. You know pictures in the house -- Therapist sent a series 44 years old he's got a master's from MIT -- companies for a few years that a MBA from Harvard and so I felt he was employable and so I wasn't worried from that that and and everything happens for a reason."
" You know senate dot governor Sununu can now continue stay with us we're -- to -- we're gonna go to Judd -- right now we're gonna -- best -- He's he's going to be she's speaking live at the press conference all on the -- so -- listen to."
" Furious Japanese or any cabinet for that matter."
" Part of the team and not be able to be a 100% with the 1810% -- cannot. Blocking -- pulls out there every second or third play. And the president has been incredibly gracious. And none of this decision is related at all in anyway to his. Willingness to include. Diversity of thought -- an issue in his cannon just the opposite he has been a person who has reached out and aggressively reach out across the -- Tonight tremendously respect that. And I immensely respect him I know he's going to be a strong and effective and good president. But for me. I just realized disease issues start to comment us that. And they started crystallize it really wasn't a good fit and that I wouldn't be comfortable doing this and that there wouldn't be fair. To him to be part of a team and not be able to be -- percent on the team. So. We that in mind I said I'm going to withdraw from this. Process I realize that you would drive this point is. Really unfair in many ways but. To go forward. And take this position and then find myself. Sitting there and not be able to do the job the way should be done on behalf of the president 100%. -- would have been an even bigger mistake so. And that is why I mean this decision I do believe generally. That I can be even more effective for this presidency in the Senate. Canadians can't I -- still think -- have a fair amount of influence in getting things done around here and I suspect hopefully that they'll be. The -- effect from the comments I received from my colleagues that's. That seems to be even more the case. An enemy a lot of issues on which I'm gonna want to jump in on and carry his water here in the Senate and hopefully be successful lawyer is there a lot of things have to get to. I'm willing to work to do to. I want to especially thank few people my wife -- Who's put up with me for all these years didn't colonel lieutenant. They -- to have to do it during his last week is that especially difficult test forgive me as we've sought work through this issue. Catherine I want to thank governor New Hampshire. Who has been gracious fair. And very open -- me. -- us on this. And he's gone the extra mile and I want to thank Barney Newman. Who is."
" Oh okay you say -- isn't an easy thing and everybody. Governor Sununu immunized I don't I don't like when he says he's going to carry the water for Barack Obama."
" This is this is nice -- relax. --"
" You know that that says that it eat it you're allowed to be nice occasionally and and and the judges judges being gracious. And and trying to. At least. Convey what would he felt might at one time have been a good team to work together and and now these are generally good -- I think it's look he's judges so real fiscal conservative and and and I think it began to dawn on them that when they saw what was going into the stimulus package. That's what he thought was just a little bit of a gap with the administration was going to be huge gap and I think that's the problem."
" Now how how do you see the New Hampshire Republican Party resurrecting itself with a it was still there are still all these economic refugees you know what they're called up the New Hampshire moving across the border into it in to New Hampshire but."
" How is that's not the problem what does that Democrats were smart they started taking the pledge and made it sound like they were just as committed as Republicans to. This fiscal discipline. You know most sales tax -- income -- but they would go live and governed by spending just as much. And and not paying attention to local control and shifting power from the communities to states government. And changing the chemistry. In New Hampshire the state which the citizens of the most involved in governing themselves of any -- country. We have a huge legislature 400 people for a 1280000. Whether this -- we have the."
" And we're very we're very envious of your legislature."
" And and and everybody is that in this city and town the town boards are are very significant they said that you know local tax rate they school boards. Used to have significant power but on the last. The decade when we had all these problems with the with school. The school lawsuits. The democratic governors never really fought it aggressively or sought the constitutional amendment to deal with what the court did. And so it's it's been changing. It has not been the people that came over the boards per aboard a -- say they know why they came over we just haven't been reminding them why they came over. I think that fundamentally they'll vote right in the Republican Party explains why it's different. And remind them that they came over because of that difference."
" Towards a bad sign when you start losing those old -- those county offices way to on the ballot to you know you know what I'm talking about a half I totally losing the -- 2000 sex."
" We got swamped and 678. You know glued to the country got the Republicans across the country that swamp in six and eight we couldn't stop the disease from sitting here. In the past we used to be able quarantine and at the border but that this time we couldn't. And that's why ambac and the party you know running the party a lot of a lot of pulled a faction of the party together oh and helped raise some money want to get some resources. I want to give a clearer message we want to talk a little bit about the party differences. We want to talk about that lip service to the pledges not enough for fiscal discipline talk about local control and and the value of community we don't."
" Inches which is still going that you know he he's he's going to file an amicus brief against it would it would the mass SJC with this attempt to collect sales taxes for Massachusetts up there I mean he's he's make him he's still make in the right moves governor."
" And religion is a very nice man and and not a way that may be the problem is so nice. That he has allowed the liberal leadership in the house the democratic liberal leadership in the house. And the liberal democratic leadership in the Senate dominate the process. And he really has -- in force. What might be a slightly more conservative percent that perspective that he has. Then the rest of the elected party officials on the democratic side. We the only way to make sure that -- people say well these sounds like a Republican. The only make way to make sure you get Republican principles in the law is to elect Republicans. The Democrats have faked bids for about a decade. Maybe twelve other the last fourteen years now that he's going to be there another two years. It's time to stop the faking and the go with the real thing and Republicans have to explain what the differences between the real thing and a copy."
" Governor Sununu what we have to figure break the do you want to stay with us -- one more segment we got four lines people want to talk to --"
" Hey if he had nobody else to come on I'll really get time so yeah."
" Well with what I was gonna talk of my clock to -- bomb in California but you know we've we've got to do we have a log of a show that everything can be pushed -- you okay what would people want to talk to you governor Sununu phi OK hold on hold on 1877469432."
" 1877469432. To us the toll free number of our car show we have -- people want to talk to their former New Hampshire governor. John Sununu -- the new chairman of the myth of the impeccable mastered the New Hampshire Republican Party double thinking on your part get. Governor Sununu I don't know if you heard the -- newscast but you know you said it was a day to make nice as a senator Greg was saying nice things about the Obama administration. Apparently the Obama administration didn't get them the memo because gives the Press Secretary just sort of -- through. Senator Gregg under the bus and said that. The that he had sought out the White House for the job."
" Yeah I heard that. I'm gonna join senator gradient today is that -- midnight on it maybe tomorrow -- Are you doing I think that's the act act at a this is I'm glad we judge that the tone today."
" Okay will take some calls for governor Sununu you can ask you about how he plans to world reinvigorate the that the battered New Hampshire Republican Party. John your next with how we guard and a former governor John Sununu go ahead job."
" I want that's what that's X. This is so moral law are relative newcomer to this they had been -- flew over five years and I'm not want to stock up while he's there. Slump would like them -- to get a couple of questions for me one day visit. What's the approximate balance and ball state house is now in other words I -- percent and I believe and -- percent Democrat. I noticed that a 100% Democrats is that if this senate is fourteen and Democrat. And how is -- about a 177. Republicans out of 400 so that leaves. 223. -- 177. Well one more question I had to what is that there are a lot of people like Kabul. Longtime residents there really complain that allowed this stuff in it didn't start until same day. Border registrations yeah."
" They -- all the time governors and myself."
" I don't know a lot of people weren't taking anabolic delegate lead --"
" When he's he's governor Sununu what he's saying is that same day voter registration is led to massive voter fraud that there there were reports of me now if they're true or not we hear him every Election Day are in the border towns especially -- these buses coming up from Massachusetts -- Full full of college students in that that's that's when the that's when the Democrats started -- over the state. The state government."
" Yeah you know I I think the country has. An issue on on voter integrity and we certainly saw it nationally these issues with acorn. These multiple registrations. There was legislation passed that the federal level in the ninety's. That created problems for states giving them really. Very limited alternatives. On what they would do. And not unfortunately I think in New Hampshire is the alternative we took was based on the same day registration. Which as you point out. Is fraught with opportunities for fraud."
" You wouldn't understand we have tighter voter registration Massachusetts than you do write New Hampshire."
" I do understand that and I do know. That it is a serious concern and I do know. There are other issues related to that in the in the college town. The college students would take advantage of same day registration. And vote in New Hampshire there's a lot of concern about that we have asked a couple of lawyers. To examine what the situation is what we're obliged under federal law to have what we're. What we have done under legislative changes in the states. It really is this something that should be examined not just the New Hampshire though. But as a broad issue across the country because more and more I think you're going to -- people complaining about. The problems of the integrity of the voting system I think you bring up a good point caller I wish I had a better answer for you -- to say we are very concerned about it. And we have people looking into what we can and can't do this deal with it."
" Good question though John thanks for the call 18774694322. Mark your next with Howie Carr and -- governor John Sununu the new chairman these New Hampshire Republican Party go ahead --"
" Come down their rental on the -- Like. I'm already got a quick question Torre I couldn't. Go ahead. I think it."
" I'm I'm -- Lydia dean and now we have some are rather left leaning Republicans. Permitting as well as you may now."
" I don't know how could be referring to mark."
" I won't name any names but. I mean it's it's very very frustrating that that we have such a liberal -- we aimed at such a liberal. Republican Party here and it's curious you know we look at what it Democrats are doing especially their relationship. In their marketing strategies this seems to have been the big labor unions but what can we do hear me now do you have any chips -- what we might be able to do."
" To turn around Republican Party could work well matched -- here as well."
" Well look I believe and a party that that doesn't shut out factions I think every every slice of your party. Ought to be accepted within the party we have liberal Republicans we have conservative republic Republicans. But what you should do is -- out the differences internally. And then stand together now I do know what you're referring to the issue of of senators know and senator Collins is supporting the stimulus package. Particularly when they stood on the procedural vote with the Democrats. But the only way you can do -- that is by putting internal pressure in New York State. To show them the -- bulk of this supports still comes from the base of the party. And that the base of the party is not on any issue you have to express whether the base of the party is happy or unhappy."
" I think governor Sununu what people frustrated admit in -- about -- it's more senator Collins than a senator -- because senator Collins was just reelected last year I mean she he she couldn't. She can sort of relax and and then vote with her conscience then there are apparently your conscience told to vote for this sup port Gillis. Fiasco that said now going to be passed tomorrow probably by both houses."
" Well I wish I had a more satisfying answer but the best thing you can do is just make sure that the Republican Party in Maine. Communicate either support or it's discussed. What whatever people do on this -- whatever the senators do on the specific issue. But it doesn't pay can communicate with those that represent you. They are sensitive to being reflective of of what they think. There is their constituents care about and and I think people underestimate the value of lobbying as a citizen. You know an individual citizen. Particularly when they come home to -- I am a great believer that lobbying at home is ten times as valuable or a hundred times as valuable as lobbying in Washington. And I think you just have to make your voice is heard as they party. And and and just keep that up all -- you know it's gotta be like a pebble in the issue you've got to be there all the time."
" She heard the she heard the voices of her constituents on the illegal immigration amnesty bill of 2007 -- she changed on that one but she didn't on this one again. Because well may be because she was just reelected."
" But I also thank you probably didn't have time to make the communications assault took place and about a seven day period. And and and you know it takes time to put the groups together a moment to communicate."
" Thanks for the call mark I hear our -- you're relaxed and Peter you're next with how we car and New Hampshire former New Hampshire governor John Sununu go ahead Peter."
" Hey governor I was around the state house are quite a bit when you -- governor -- everyday it was a nice state feel you're just a nice public governance. They're embarrassed may make and you can I'm -- There's a lady up but -- who shed a lot of kids who are not young John lawsuit election and she's going to be awfully happy tonight didn't know that Dutch. He added at least thinking about doing it again and I got to play governor are. You all and I know there's a lot of people liberals support John and -- will help getting back into the US senate. And I wanted to let you know that's -- I'll do anything -- gender helped you."
" Listen I usually -- Colin and and and thanks sustained MySpace I did have fun is governor. It was what are they the nicest. Things I've ever been able to do in my life it was gratifying. We tried to get a lot of things done we rebuild. A lot of the infrastructure in the statement facilities and that's the great state to -- because the people care about it. And I will tell John that there's at least one or two people out there that one of the really come back and."
" Yeah we we also heard all share for mom my state senator down here in Massachusetts Scott brownies got a lot of relatives in New Hampshire and they worked hard for a your son and in the fall and they they want to work hard form again in 2000 down."
" Well we really do appreciate everybody that's saying those nice things about and by as I say I I really do think he was -- good senator. It was just a tough election."
" Thanks for the call Peter Jeff you're next with Howie -- and former New Hampshire governor John Sununu go ahead Jeff."
" I got -- Leo valujet. I'm doing okay I'm a little like feel disenfranchised. Actually have the election to elect a Republican Massachusetts does but down. I was just wondering. Given a backpack edit disagree with you I think that this this state console market that the collapse I think the southern half of the stay well -- in the third -- an apple has stated salt pile up but nobody ever coming back. I have a two part question -- I'll one what do you demographics say are there are not Republican and independent slapped actually sort of an election. And so is -- Judd Gregg job one because you know the Obama cult is going to be sterile and about twelve month. I'm inevitably -- never yep they have I don't you have a negative I've ever run."
" This is that this is the day is not going to run in 2000 and but let me talk a little bit about the registration issue. What I what I got elected governor we have a three party system. We had the Democrats we have the conservative Republicans we have the Republican. The Republicans that call themselves moderates. And it really was a three party structure Milt Thompson was on the conservative side others were on the liberal side and every once and awhile. A conservative would would run as an independent -- moderate Republican got the nomination. And they carry a moderate Republican would run as an independent of a conservative got the nomination. One of the things I did we strike but that party together and we were able -- Rebuild the party make it a single party we had my six years followed by forward -- in fourth -- And then the party would strong now. There's no such thing as the moderate Republican group they are ball moved in and read a moved over and registered as independence. Part of my job is chairman of the Republican Party. If they go back and ferret out of that independent registration at least -- votes on the Republican side and that that obviously is the target. But what we're trying to put the."
" Governor governor assuming a hold you right there were out of time but tell -- yeah welcome to come on the show times."
" Thank you so much of the courtesy of being on in your life. -- and don't forget to come up and buy cigarettes and liquor up here."
" I I have a place in Lincoln and accept that -- after half a megabyte gas or there -- too soon very soon bright idea so many right ha ha. Thank you governor Sununu looked like -- again 18774694322. On how we car."
