| Description: | Michael Lewis, 46, stands to get more than $70,000 a year for the rest of his life, the Boston Globe reports. He also has a new job as transportation secretary in Rhode Island with a $130,000 paycheck. Lewis didn't retire from his longtime post as the head of the Big Dig project as the state previously said, but was actually fired last year by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. |
" And now all this time. Forma colleagues cars show. Hey I'm John Kerry is a very close friend of mine who. We've been friends for years. John McCain in 2004 was a was a Senator John McCain. Who had indicated that very different attitude than any number of subjects nomination John McCain is a different person it's a free country and they have freedom of speech in America. Who do you love. But a lot Gary -- aren't you angry right now country."
" It is so wrong in this such a good grades and rich country that a young woman and her baby. Would die because she didn't have health insurance -- a hundred dollars to get exam. Bad timing bad staffing. And the kind of thing where I read the story is too good to be true it probably isn't true but most expensive car on how -- I would alarm and chop."
" Another giving up they're giving him I believe I'm still the fighters that doctor king and JFK and Ronald Reagan. But this is -- involves somebody call a draw."
" Once John Wayne dude I have only five words for him. From my cold dead hands announced -- Now how long runs all of what you mentioned you let your guests listed as duty are both part of what it. Do we are right I'm off color guard WRKO radio America."
" Work 1877469432218774694322 that is the toll free number of how we are sure if you would like to join this year in you know loosen the show on the Internet how we car dot com now a cart dot com just click on the live audio streaming -- for a year. Radio station where usually listen to the show pre emphasis for the game tomorrow you can almost -- the show won the Internet now cart dot com. The other or another big pension story in the papers over the weekend. We've been doing most of the heavy lifton the Boston Herald but the globe got this one. About the a guy named Michael Lewis he was the head of the big big moves ahead of the whole project. Turns out he did not retire. From his post as head of the big big project as the stated previously said he was actually fired by the turnpike authority. But for -- the news wasn't bad the move allowed him that more than tripled his state pension. Yes you heard me right he'd triple this state pension from 23000 to 72578 dollars a year according to state records. He's 46 and he will receive those pension checks until the day he dies. As with -- other turnpike retirees to stay will also pay 80% of its health insurance for life so he's 46 he's got a 72000 dollar pension. He also after being fired. After being fired. Death where is vice thing. -- also lived on his feet with a new jobs he began working last month in his new position as Rhode Island transportation secretary earning. A 13230000 dollars a year and by the way the turnpike authority told him that he should that he should apply for the -- knew they -- pension. Mary Jane O'Meara who was the turnpike acting director when Lois laughed -- Lois and -- letter dated last October 22. That his position was being abolished and suggested he would be eligible for the enhanced pension due to determination. On mayor's position offered no other position Lois and treated his departures a foregone conclusion saying he would be contacted for an -- exit interview. And thanking him for your many contributions she now works at the -- Port authority. So there it is your your told they they've already raised the polls once this year in the Mass Turnpike have taken their thinking about raising them again they've raised them on the tunnels. And this is this is what the money's going -- to pay to pay a guy who was fired from the big big big they're at age 46 is going to get a 72000 dollar a year pension. Joining us now is -- me those former candidate for governor also former board member of the Massachusetts turnpike authority -- this is this is another outrage."
" How it this is just -- a long line outrageous just like that Mike Lewis had been on that projects and stay one basically the last seven years he'd taken over when -- when the alleged cost overruns were announced speck can net 2000 it's easy I believe he was a total 185 level plus plus plus and I."
" 185000 dollars a year."
" It just under mister chairman Matt. Amarillo that about quarter million dollars but that goes on all the time and in my opinion as someone who was there. This is all basically just keep your mouth shut up at the money because it happened with a Almonte. Chief financial officer at the turnpike authority a fellow by the name of Jimmy Rooney happen."
" What is now the -- Jimmy Rooney is now the head of the mass conventions and their authority current correct that he -- the couple coffee at City Hall."
" Correct but it also capitalist society worked for me also works he is well yes. He brought while he was actually financial opposite he was being paid for by the eight MB DA but in an -- I."
" Like what are these baseball trades where the team the ones to get rid of the big salary has the pay some of the body are no it was."
" The team that that the team that paid for the big salary and and that the big money to get rid of this guy it's you in and the other one was Peter Forman chief of staff has swept to alleges."
" I guess the former sheriff of Plymouth county Brighton and yes."
" And neck and he was allowed to allegedly -- fired after he was reassigned and he collected I believe well look 50000. For the rest of his life. At a at a guiding stayed cried yes swept you know one of her butler has basically he'd landed up over at you mad as one of -- the -- the McCormick gives."
" Steve Steve Crosby is the ones that I should be in jail for writing about the the miscreants in government."
" Well and it definitely if you don't want to be a joke don't write about this one because that's what these guys go and it's all basically -- just to keep their mouth shut it it's it's -- my opinion goes that. That the Jimmy -- one that's what it's classic because. He was -- financial officer at the protected turnpike authority. And he didn't like what was going I'm Evelyn evidently he went out. So this is right before the one point four billion dollars in cost overruns was announced. So basically he comes up but he just. I'm going to retire but when they figured out his retirement it's time at all he was nine months short so he could retire with a full pension basically. So they're allowed him to two but back some time and also you'd get. Nine -- more. And when the unions found out about it basically they they put a stake in so they they had to bring up. A number of other people to give them the ability to buy back nine months so -- cost use the taxpayer. Three point one million dollars three point one million dollars so this guy could get out and get on. Where that light in in in the you know -- call for awhile and then now its executive director."
" The -- conventions and bachelorette they caught them Rooney rule. The reason they're -- target yet I wish I had I wish I had how we call. That is that you know enable me to get some kind of big -- this is. This Christie and this is way they tell us well we need we need nineteen billion dollars more."
" Why not they don't need nineteen billion dollars more it's the same insiders that that the craft all these things together you know the Michael which -- major mellow week these that. The one that the other double tripled -- basically how we that it telling the that this this particulate governor that we need nineteen billion dollars more."
" saying that's what they're saying right that they -- that they have a press conference and they say we're gonna crack down on police details and -- that's going to show that -- sincere and our efforts to do something and then they get -- they get the headlines say they're -- crackdown in two days later they caved in and that's the end of the police detail reform."
" Well because because everything is no one -- Storey house and know what keeps that this stuff day -- Medal went went swift did did did the deed to -- Levy had to remove this illegally we stayed on that thing day after day after day with you -- I'd like results a few good reporters and -- and depth you know we we we fought that battle and we want until Tom Finneran and his crew up put two additional board members on it and it's -- thing."
" You mean that the convicted felon."
" Yet this added that the morning guys that's six to ten guys right ham. That's right but that's that's the way these things they've done in the commonwealth -- rent that you know everybody suggests that the one based story for -- but it."
" They aren't going to be kicked himself I'm the only heat -- is gonna be -- and I'm the only guy in -- and in the my whole coterie of people that doesn't get a pension you know and he and he was only look at the 32000 to begin with. -- six dollar intelligently I think I don't know where -- bigger maybe not K hill but you know what there's always another treasurer on the road -- six and make it retroactive with back."
" I'll absolutely -- that's the way that that particular you know rotten to the court system works here and and you know eat if you look at what booty I think. Released final number it was it was someplace between 75. And a 100000 dollar a year for the rest of his life."
" Then that's nice that."
" was above fifty for the rest of his."
" While Michael Michael Lewis age four I repeat age 46 age 46. They they just they just go through this rigmarole lists this this bogus classification of fight quote -- firing him and he's pension goes from 23000 to 72000."
" Let -- and I try to get him with the with the rest of -- the yet the not the usual suspects Bechtel and I'll. And it had we had we had the right of the three man Gordon from the five sample that we would've got all the guys seriously but Mike Lewis with would never answer our questions straight on. Is is suited it's from the Amarillo got there these are."
" Damned proud of the big day -- the Providence journal was an enormous undertaking that has delivered what was promised I didn't I don't remember them promising a million leaks."
" it it it's it's getting worse by the day. The context that and they won't fix it and -- back we'll get up with 475 million dollars. That's chump change sometime in the act Attorney General is -- are saying is that nothing major happens over the next next few years so well. You know so so it'll it'll cover what they think is the not a fixed."
" 18774694322 -- a couple of will take a couple of calls on these these bloated pensions and it -- we should have a note we should have more stories in the -- coming out about politically connected people like you're getting pensions have been going getting second jobs I don't want to give away -- story but I just got a letter. This weekend at the herald you know ably put deeply talk Lemieux missed this one."
" Well the this that the former head of the and -- and got a real good when he's back again for another -- so. How we -- it that this government is right -- all of this stuff and it just happens whether Democrat or Republican if it's not you know bipartisan scroll up and we're gonna pay for it from many many moans."
" Matt you're next with Howie Carr and -- miles go ahead --"
" Eight can -- Leo and that. It -- you know -- cycle well -- used every week and you know. It was a bad bad got caught coming over the right -- Hollywood average cop -- a hundred watt. You know the average a public official that the only way you gonna make year if you're an average guy -- sixty or 70000 and I challenge anyone and -- are right now who worked out today. In earn their money. And think you're gonna support Obama is 46 years old 7 o'clock is not cashing 130 plot. And you'll get attention -- about it. White at times thousands of people in the which it happened in the state where everybody is one relative away and that's what it'll never change could everywhere that a broader -- worked at a cousin who's on the and it. How he is -- step back -- infusion every week how the cycle through Heidi poll every week after the women in the boot. Hamachi hate I looked up to completely out that they and the twelve bucks an hour that you and I got to get what they say thank you make it -- Iraq."
" An automatic Ottawa that's actually that's better Matt that's better than they could be make it is a cashier at the supermarket and that's what that's what the job at all taker is equivalent of yeah."
" It differently -- give -- directions and you know its conceptual and you know -- think everybody here expects to make a hundred and all the people ought to be illegal aliens. Public officials at."
" I made great I he would say it's he could already see if I mean the the beat the blue collar areas of the state -- been hollowed out."
" Yeah if you can go to New Hampshire and that's what they'll make an end as Paul Hackett and New Hampshire."
" Yeah thanks for the call Matt rob your next with Howie Carr and Doug Christie my house go ahead rob."
" Hey al and -- eight while we're at the how. Legalize the -- possible. And the second question. What we know about it. I mean might might might make about it now all of the legislative slate legislature and."
" robbed the you know you know we limited democracy in the voters get that the government day we'd deserve and you know we we did we don't throw these people don't."
" That's right if I again it's bipartisan and it happened and the wells Lucci swift and Romney and don't they just look the other way and in -- It happens because -- Massachusetts and we're we're in session basically it in the legislature at each and every day just about so they do it for themselves they watched themselves and they. And you know -- we you can always said that note D gotten not."
" I am a good deed goes unpunished but that that though it's nothing on the level everything is it is a deal thank you know deal too small at Michael Lewis think this is not a small deal by the way."
" Well it it stuck -- mobile and it's from Mike -- he's going to he's he's. He's scoring big time. But forgot the one that's going to pick up the pieces and pay for this you know all of -- the project look at it this way. Every single one of the state -- in states that are in metro west. The people who are getting smacked the hardest with pain for the big thick that they use of 15% of the time and they pay 85% of its pot. Every single one of them voted to give Jane swift. Two additional board members to stop all of these reforms and it and it at all and it's just you know put the -- under every single."
" I don't know another running around wringing their hands talking about how terrible it is that they're talking about raising the toll yet again be awake wake up."
" Wake up if it you'll let them time and time again it it justice system that the provides so that and that you know welcome to Massachusetts and let something really changes quick. You know you're going to just keep reelected good talkers like Deval Patrick a helluva talker packet a damn thing done."
" Thanks for the call -- Randall you're next with how we turn -- my -- go ahead Randall."
" Randall probably Christie yes -- two. What about the six billion dollars of this underpass and passed and that."
" What six billion."
" Yeah underground and bridges and overpasses taken down and everything is partly due to -- sixteen it'll sixteen billion -- conventional. I don't believe me I would look at it this -- a bullet that was eleven billion dollars -- the construction right with the rest the money ago. And that's. I thought the battle for years of camera on and I use my own money to do it but at eleven a little eleven billion dollars the construction Randall. We -- that the rest of the money go who is going to protect -- money. -- other rattled two attacks paying situation persons are regularly called independent without. They acted at best they could last year and how to network in the best you can."
" For Christie Christie and I Randall R Ross slowly moving to Florida that -- and -- such."
" It's not unfortunately many asked how he and -- them as well I don't --"
" I see him in Florida I spent more time with Massachusetts people in Florida than I do in Massachusetts developed -- busy work and appeared to get the money to get the hell out of --"
" Well that's going to happen more often and as the -- to run this state keeps going up with less and less population I don't know business. That can sustain itself when the costs are increasing. And a customer account is decreasing so let it just going to follow a few if you of people. More most folks and it keeps six you know paying taxes and you know. Working about or everything in the underground Communist -- illegal alien thing is just going to think of."
" Thanks for the call Randall Scott your next with how -- my house were talking about this so latest pension grab this one by Michael Lewis the former but he's a guy occasional -- who was. There was this fat guy with a goatee that would be fat man Amarillo and writes the ending right to his his his side was this guy named Michael Lewis who pretended that he knew what he was talking about and now he's just gotten a 72000 dollar a year pension for the rest of his life. Plus 80% health benefits at the age of 46 tomorrow. Scott your next with Howie Carr and -- I."
" taking my -- of the -- let me ask a question we -- but it's a rotten system we know that the leaders -- is rampant. So what went first to bop but stick look at the -- for a minute what can we -- it'll eliminate all the told some aspects."
" First we're gonna have to get in the tiny machine and I have to go back at a time machine to the vote on the mast the metropolitan transportation authority in the what they call that Christie the -- the day. And that's that's what that's when the the writers of the Mass Turnpike I really screwed because they decided to make the us. Those of us in metro west and in the metro west meaning everything west of -- more square include parts of the city of Boston meant everything west of -- more square we will all pay for the Big -- and that's you know we're screwed now could wear though with -- on the hook for."
" Did you know you know there there is going to be awake for the the taxpayers of the common ought to really make a statement and that this upcoming election is 2008 there's the ballot question that's that basically would abolish the state income tax. -- is up -- it that lost my actually the last time -- 5545 or so close right now if the people."
" Nobody with no money no money."
" Right if the -- now they've got these signatures if not for people vote for this thing. Which would absolutely revolutionized the way this state run this business in the in the commonwealth -- and if the legislature doesn't do something with that. That Nadia talk in the 2010 would would that when his -- he Deval Patrick runs for reelection. Now you're talking about that a public that is that is pot for some type of revolution a revenge at that point because they. That this economy's not going to get better it described going to get worse and and and let the people do something at it'll let the legislature does something first. Well this ballot question that might spent. It will pass that it 2010 LB like there was how we in 1990 when bill -- one. He had that's been -- you -- senate have are Republicans it never use the -- once he'd threaten it but he never used that. And he got some real real reforms done for our you know for a few of for a few years until they took paralleled and gave him. A few of the things that he wanted to change things around again."
" They kidnapped his brain is what they did exist thanks for the call Scott 1877469432 to your stick around -- other segment hold on we'll keep talking about this. 18774694322 on -- we --"
" Step."
" Only -- adults and I know. I know."
" 1877469432218774694322 typical for tomorrow what color show. This these these pensions short answer. Are really getting to people we've us your in the dreaded private sector. He'll get defined benefit pension and according you have to contribute to your own plans to your own 41 K -- its capture own individual retirement accounts. In these guys are just how many in in the grabbing all this money in and then on top of everything else. They're double dipping I mean that the one that got me a couple weeks ago when I'd I'd heard about this before the era Kristi. Was when it's a city pension but this -- Paul McCann who was been on the Boston redevelopment authority for a hundred years. He he checks out he was the acting director for awhile he gets a pension of 135. Thousand dollars right -- And then they they bring him back as a consultant for another 2000 plus a week."
" That that's what happened to the the executive director of the MVP the general manager at the MBTA you know -- it's a huge pension retire in comes back -- big big bucks. I would let me just give you one more -- bought it on the project -- not on the turnpike departed director of the column name. JU Richard -- got."
" Yes -- yes he he was a he had been around in various side hack administration's federal and state right."
" Incorrect as usual the chair Richard cap got I went in that would let -- to fire this guy because we pay him about a hundred. 65 thou a year and then met Amarillo -- of the -- met amber hello achieve what Matt basically to take over everything right. So we come back from about eight a six month long legal process take its but through the supreme judicial court. And we find out that capped -- want to leave but he wants to lead on under his own terms which if we. If if we basically fire him right yeah you get to collect. He gets to collect about a 100000 dog walking away muddy plot. -- Ali. He gets all -- moving expenses and you know you name it how to write but if Skype a single let. He had a job rigged up. With that he was going to go to the Federal Highway Administration which was that the group that was overseeing the big Dick so basically you know I knew that I set. I'm not going to five if he wants to leave let them leave on his own accord -- this job static like getting in in August of that this summer he he wants us to fire -- on July so why vote against the Levy and out. Amarillo vote to fires that guy collects. The the big money and guess which he is today. He is the administrator the lead guy and that Federal Highway Administration. That the group that was overseeing the big Dick this is the -- that this guy kept that there was it would although this -- stuff happened."
" And I fired. He was tired and now he's overseeing I mean this correct -- and opera immediately. Another I give you another example city city the the superintendent of schools a former headmaster Boston Latin. He he got he got his pension jacked up to about a 140000. And then mumbled -- retire and they keep them on they put him that make him the new quote unquote director of intergovernmental affairs I don't know if he's in the bullpen. To take over the new superintendent of schools can't handle -- they have to get rid her what's going on. The guy is retired he's make it to -- grand a year."
" None of those guys that women will have a lose their house in full closure. None of them will ever have to just live on Social Security alone like so many Hewlett that your listeners out there this is a rigged game. It's it's rigged by about 200 -- you know the usual suspects the insiders in Boston if you remember at a couple weeks ago they showed what the CEO and and that you know -- chief officers of the at Harvard community health care costs blue cross blue shield basically will pull it down in bonuses. Valerie it and just sit on the board you don't like yeah that the head of the the head of the AFL CIO -- right I think he gets 75000 albeit. Just sit on one of the bulletin Boston -- last since."
" I don't get invited some people it is yeah that's. I don't forget the stock and I just one idea what the 75000 dollars for going to Florida for five or six days."
" So everybody ceaseless every one of these sports that basically it it it's -- that helped -- think that that. Quick quick getting health care costs increased sit idle company 15% this year. And he's got a locket around basically you know Charlie -- admitted to what you're basically plus a bonus."
" If she Christie's after Charlie baker is Charlie baker might be the Republican Q I have for."
" Good luck to him -- good to have good they have admitted he can. He can do whatever he wants what that party but these guys Ali did they have put themselves."
" I doubt no kidding I had -- this it's I just I just can't believe how much they getting murmured a first I myself I heard people talking about this I was thinking about it today you know I I I watch them one time to -- O'Neill's office this was way way way back to late seventies and he and Chris Lionel our pocket they're going. Well you know I got so many years ended -- look at it this and that I didn't know what the hell we were talking about it."
" And -- it is talking about. They -- they would that be I didn't know what I was talking about right what. Tensions that is what was going here I -- martyr and that building. I why it's you know when they -- very quickly yeah."
" It is it is -- have you ever walked -- City Hall. Have you seen what it it only -- the turnpike authority in the amount of cubicles on top of cubicles are topical --"
" I'm telling you though -- you you look at city hall and as you know was as crazy as some of the salaries are at the Statehouse and I put out to see you walk down the hill. To City Hall yet and the people they are Macon like 305070% more than all of their -- there their counterparts at the state level it's it is it's. -- what they get paid."
" That don't have a lose thousands --"
" Thanks thanks for the call Scott Peter you're next with Howie Carr and -- miles go ahead Peter."
" Christie -- two questions. What is in the private sector the -- of small reduction in -- and you must retention and have. And have -- go to -- files that he'd die and that is that people involved."
" Yes yes it has Peter."
" Though so with this guy whose bodies six were to be looking at paying attention and so he had 2850. Are you would need to in and where -- but -- just like build -- just tension would go to you know."
" I guess -- the seeded Mary right exactly yeah meeting the you know Peter they were paying they were paying. Pensions the civil war widows until into the 1980 without serious there with the war because organized -- and -- getting married at age 85 in the 1920s the sixteen year old girls. And that's I mean that's the way it was I mean it's gonna you know it's going to be the same here Kristi."
" Well how would that have been the big thing about that the MP -- you'll love this is that most of this pension liabilities unfunded. You know it it it's just like paper money basically to pick it Peter have a lot of kids because that's what they -- that that's what they want to pay for these pageants so I hope you're very busy guys and they doing well but have a lot of kids because that's that's what makes this system --"
" question I've seen the envelope that comes looked -- couple -- application on the -- at least ten different languages. And bite my question you were so they get every Tom Dick Harry coming into the state to -- it you know that by."
" Only ten Peter 'cause I think they have the team languages on the welfare is quite -- handling it -- are the languages that are missing since Iowa class action -- also one called the CEO Leo."
" Pristine wedding think it's good we know we know that about the people found that in late. Actually can there's been some articles in the paper as saying the shell -- what you think you're gonna happen to that program."
" get -- look at -- when I was running for governor I said that. That there alliance about it then that the impact and it was that the based that it was taught it would cost at most a 150 million dollars a year tell it to deliver health care for all. The pilot saying next year it's going to be 869 million dollars okay that's. This is in basically the second year of of the program -- that's another topic that there aren't enough doctors to administer because so many people coming into the program. The doctors basically just trying to handle everybody. That the government. Have to lie Peter to get anything done whether it's the big ticket two point three billion or helped give -- a 150 million dollars yet. They have to -- and yet it is just cut them. Not nothing's gonna change really until it it basically gets Clinton that everything goes to help. And I hand basket in just like up a bankrupt company you'd start new again and that's that's what happened almost -- you remember in 1990 would well. That just gonna go on and --"
" Bulger -- you know and he always say at the saint Patrick's -- breakfast show -- reformer and I'll show -- someone who won't be back regularly you know in in humor -- stroke -- there was truth I mean he just went to work and started pick off those Republican senators you know he would get -- well to -- him to a cabinet position or did not come off for something would come -- and and -- he had it down so that he can override -- and -- got to be friends with -- And you know the same thing it'll happen I mean this is this is their life I mean it's not like anybody in the legislature has any real obstacle back to -- they're just. -- is the legislature. I'm the guy he'd be admitted beats working for eleven just asked Kelly your us dollar each row or any error any of the rest of the blue -- swift and anyone it's primarily -- thanks for the call Peter Keith you're next with holly Karr and -- my house go ahead keep."
" Take -- you know you know a project -- have been elected because of what you just said. That government people try to get something done I mean look at that the amount is why. People don't respect what you Tuesday. It would use we dropping out via the -- take -- just forget who else buddhists say things like. Unfunded that a majority of unfunded that's not true he noted that pearl. Oh come on of course but it. You know it's not true right. And it went through your campaign duplicates about the worst of the ball was talking about black like why -- that perpetuate the -- Our property assessment. Outlook and pick out which will happen that he -- yeah on it yeah."
" Particular actually run we had to legal opinions that ditch noticed that we could do exactly always saying. So that we could hit -- could really do something about the property tax in the commonwealth via. And and we and actually what we did is we piggyback off the one of the business groups that stated that that 58%. Of all state revenues should go back to this cities and towns in terms of local right. Did they say they're getting 600 million dollars a year adjusted for inflation left but they were getting in 2000 through."
" That's why do we there was something very cheerleaders had to be laid off. Yeah particularly well would keep everything we set the police got it it's dead it's."
" Without spreading throughout -- though if you tell the truth you -- get elected."
" Thanks thanks for the call keep 18774 so we'll play another caller to and then let the -- the go and Dennis you're next with Howie -- and -- my house go ahead --"
" could sort of get dressed and intentions I want Astros who were questioned whether Arafat acts implementation elude. Politicians lower -- right closely. I'd heard in my Social Security. And the publishing group and pension fund the government. Yeah I don't work that's -- it was such and -- put -- into. I ordered it removed that attention."
" You should have been elected official in the city of Boston an issue would have any of these problems."
" I -- but certainly children nutrition group that we -- and that's aren't going to."
" Good -- they have to vote for a Dennis you think the bombs want to leave again that they have to go get a real job."
" a -- term limit every two years for the state legislature every two years for United States congress at least six years or United States senate. These that you keep electing a week keep electing the same book Poland's. That it just taking in this state from a great state to a Rust Belt state. And that's why that's -- population continues to decrease that's what business. Businesses keep going out and you know just leaving the commonwealth -- on the small businessmen now I cannot believe what this state is is talking about."
" One more very very quickly Nicole your -- last call go ahead the call."
