Last month the unemployment rate fell to 8.3%. This sounds like progress in the economy, right? Well maybe not...The unemployment rate counts only people who don't have a job and are looking for one. Once you stop looking, you're no longer considered unemployed. People who have taken early retirement or just stopped looking for work have caused the employment numbers to look better than they really are. This is also known as Shrinkage...Howie wondered how many people have given up.

In A USA Today /Gallup Poll Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney ties President Barack Obama in the nation's key battleground state races, while Newt Gingrich now trails the president by a whopping 14 percentage points. Howie wanted to know who was now going to vote for Mitt.

Newt Gingrich has threatened to withdraw from any future debates with audiences that have been instructed to be silent. NBC had asked the audience the debate in Tampa to hold their applause until the commercial breaks. Howie was slightly amused at this posturing. Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas skipped the White House invitation to honor the Bruins deciding to use a special moment for the organization, the team and its fans to voice his displeasure with the U.S. government. On his facebook page he wrote "I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People". Howie thought Tim did the right thing.
