  2. Boston City Councilor Stephen Murphy On The Wal-Mart Battle

    Audio

    07/27/2011

With Wal-Mart eyeing Somerville for its first smaller, urban market store in the Northeast, the Boston City Council president yesterday questioned Hub Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s strong opposition to the world’s largest retailer. “There are lots of other communities that would embrace a Wal-Mart,” said City Council President Stephen Murphy told the Herald. “What good does it do Boston to lose 450 jobs to Somerville? It doesn’t expand our tax base, employ city residents or provide a low-priced market in a tough economy.” We spoke with Steve about this issue.

  3. Economic Speech or Ragtime?

    Audio

    07/26/2011

President Obama’s debt limit speech was utterly mystifying. A presidential address to the nation is a chosen and deliberate political act. It involves the expenditure of limited resources — prime television time and public patience. It is, presumably, the result of a strategy, involving policy, communications and speechwriting staff. Last night’s speech contained no new proposals and no serious attempt to reframe the public debate. Howie wondered ifs President Obama has run out of gas.

In an abrupt turnaround, Mayor Thomas M. Menino has said he will withdraw Boston police from the federal Secure Communities program unless US federal immigration officials limit their deportation efforts to only those immigrants who have committed serious crimes. Howie pondered to questions aren't all crimes serious.

    Audio

    06/30/2011

The body of a 36-year-old woman was pulled from a state-run pool in Fall River Tuesday night, apparently after being in the water since Sunday, prompting the temporary closure of all state-operated deep-water pools in Massachusetts while officials investigate, authorities said. It was not clear yesterday if any swimmers noticed the woman’s body between Sunday and Tuesday. The Herald News, a local newspaper, ran a photo in Tuesday’s paper showing swimmers in the water on Monday. Can you believe it took that long to find her body?
