Avi Nelson - The Democratic National Convention
Sat, 8 Sep 2012|
President Barack Obama asked the nation Thursday to choose a “harder” path to long-term economic prosperity, outlining grand economic promises for a second term in office and describing the 2012 election as a vote on the nature of American citizenship. Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention concluded three days of speeches from Democratic leaders, who told voters that their party – and only their party – could be trusted to look out for the interests of the suffering middle class. Avi dissects some of the more popular speeches from the recent Democratic National Convention.

-- Nelson welcome to the program. My phone number toll free 87746943. Read text message code is 686. Team. Email address and Nelson WOKO. Dot com. Well. It's over. That is to say the Democratic Convention where we knew we have to talk a little bit about it and then finally it will be. It will be put behind us showed that's on the agenda. Some of the common that they offered to comic relief I I must say that I. They're chilled -- watching the whole thing. I promise of tuning out the only reason -- they waited. Is free you know I knew we're gonna do this program and having this conversation and so. Since really should have a very idea of what -- some of what we're not. I don't know if you -- the stomach for more than I did but in any event. We'll talk a little bit about that today. Do want to take notice however that coming up. This is the MBA that should tell amber. Picked -- 9/11 anniversary is coming up this week. Each and dishing to punish the eleventh anniversary commemoration of 9/11 but sometimes you forget what the year was done that. Michelle one. Level than -- she she think about it that that there are your kids now who are. -- thirteen fourteen years old. For home this event is something in the history books we don't have any conscious recollection. Of what happened nor the feeling that we had on that day. And I guess that four. For them it's it's kind of the way it is for those of us and motioned people wishing me who who were not alive or we're not but if consciously aware from every -- barely alive. Of Pearl Harbor. And therefore we we just don't have the feel for what it was like -- we've seen pictures of it. -- and pictures of people huddled around radios trying to get information of course in that era. There where there were no almost instant videos and so we had to. You got a different sense of the whole thing but for the people who are there was just Israel maybe even. More frightening because all you do have. Was the spoken word coming through a box in your living room war -- people huddled around cars as they listened. To radeon. Four for the people of her kids now fourteen years old maybe even fifteen. That's the way it is such the march of time march of history shall different perspective than that move because that way every year but many -- and it. It is. An event of such momentous import. That it will be commemorated every year as -- Pearl Harbor. And it's a worthy therefore taking note 9/11 the anniversary. Coming up this week. Okay. As to the convention and when usual at the two conventions were back to back to even political junkies I think I convention now. And I think also attended each one deluded the other in the sense that -- there wasn't ample opportunity for things to sink again. Mirrors I can -- by looking at the the poll results each. Each candidate did seem to get a little bit of a bounce it looked to me that Romney on the heard different numbers and it depends which poll you wanna look at the that looked to me like Romney got something on the order of three or four point two Obama and god may be a player to did it. Now part of the problem with a bomb us pounce. Is that the ball -- was supposed to balance all of a sudden turned a lead on the way down because within hours. Of the end of the convention the end of his speech. The they knew that George report came out and I found myself thinking as I watched the speech and I did watch his speech in Asia as you know. Who a lot of people given -- mixed reviews. That he as good speech but it didn't sore that wasn't the same as -- was before. Part of the problem for Obama is that he automatically sets the standard very high because she's considered to be great orders won't plunge he has his. His reliable teleprompter there. And his security blanket that he can deliver great speech and so you expect a great speech. Well sure sure Clinton Clinton apparently delivered four that the Democrats old man I thought Clinton would never stop. I that they were gonna have to you know cut the wires is something you get him off that podium. And maintain or should I looked at the numbers and wrote them down somewhere. Somebody get a word count. The more you show me like 65%. Higher than the script. We -- going on Obama but he did seem to deliver quality expectations Obama did not. But here's an interesting factor with the Obama's speech. It would shed by the commentators and I believe that that. Obama had already been given us a preview award given the numbers the jobs numbers. But the rest of us were going to get at 8:30 the next morning. And I found myself thinking as I heard -- reached as I too wasn't overwhelmed by an idea of course. -- granted I'm biased and not looking to be overwhelmed. But I found myself thinking I bet the unemployment rate is gonna go up tomorrow. And the Obama knows that and it's taken the wind out of the shows he can't very well. Talking glowing terms about how much progress we're making and if we stay the course a little longer. We're gonna have a greater economy. Has noticed I was absent from the speech. And I think that that's so I thought that the reason it was an option. Why is that he knew he could make that claim because in a few hours the claim would be undercut. Well. I guess I was technically wrong the unemployment rate actually went down for -- point 38 point one but. It went down. Because so many people -- dropped out of the workforce everybody is acknowledging. That these statistics we yesterday on the latest with regard to the economy. I'm quite bad. The number of jobs created. Which much lower than was expected. And indeed lower than is necessary what does he need some like a 150000. Jobs can be created in a month. Just to keep pace with the growing population. Not -- Obama's Soledad number 430 the afternoon of his speech she did she had before yeah and that. That makes sense she's she show while the unemployment rate was okay Obama and -- That the next morning he there was the American people. We were going to get results that showed that the economy was sluggish at the very best and really a disappointment. -- He couldn't very well short with the rhetoric about. How hey stay with me guys and everything's going to be great because we're we can see the progress remember Biden before. The talk among America's turn the corner. Yeah we turn the corner and he seemed rubble on the new quarter. Reminded me of you know you climb he lost in the mountain climb up to a peak and he looked he gonna look over the no more desolation. -- That may account for why Obama couldn't shore. To absorb because he had a minor problem that the fact we're going to contradict. Any. Extravagant rhetoric that he had put forward unlike Biden. -- Finland Biden. Hillary should a great speech. Exposure was a good speech did. I'm Brit Hume captured what I thought I know you're watching in in the hall I was watching on television. -- I had the feeling -- always this angry guy yelling at me I keep turning the volume down. Because enough. He will be yelled that. Her line was so angry. Where everything she's main important point says it three times mean literally repeats the phrase so I didn't give it. Quite this time marches some other. OK so here we are. Whereas the repudiation. Of the Obama record by the facts. Of the economy by that the data of the real data he can't blame Mitt Romney other Republicans that if she is not there now -- Obama mile -- the Republicans -- only password he wants and everything would be fine well no. He's had ample time to make a fine. And the question is do we want to do want to rehire him remember for all the blame the ones -- -- the bush economy. And -- George Bush's fault and all according inherited. He was hired to fix it that's what he told us he could do. He told us when he was campaigning. That he was going to cut the deficit in half. -- do that thank you would double that. Now he's gonna close gitmo by 2010. Didn't do that in an additional string of broken promise it. So the question is is he deserving. Of another term. And I guess the question is really. If you thinking of giving him another term. What would be different. What is she suggesting now. They have minority -- May recharge the stimulus you spend not three quarters of a trillion dollars. Government spending is not the end share. Despite with the Democrats who had you believe. -- all all I think. Whatever feeling you have with the convention. It. It's dissipated now quickly. Undercut by the facts of the matter. The labor force dropped according to these latest statistics. By 368000. Workers. And the -- the portion of the population. In the labor force. Plays the proportion -- apportioned the people who are working. Is 63 and a half percent and that is the lowest level since September of 1981. That's more than thirty years ago this is not a good direction of travel. He hasn't earned. The he hasn't earned the right to claim that he should be hired again. They should be reelected. We'll see where ago I know is likable. I don't find likable but I know a lot of people do and I can understand why they think he's likable. A mother Michelle Obama by the way. And -- should give a good speech like you give a good speech to. So what what was the speech was basically. I love my husband so vote for -- -- but Bishkek the wife is say. He's a bum vote for many -- back. -- tell you mean maybe go to the podium and always a nightmare may where's this journey as surprised as to what Michelle Obama's. Well your thoughts are welcome. Texted exactly were harsh I just told me he got the numbers at 430 the day before. Yeah I I've -- Jolie got him for but I didn't know the time so for thirty so example Tom I wonder -- we all of this speech. No wonder. Guess the real cynical -- -- he did he invest in the stock market has he had advanced numbers tried. Most technically illegal to get numbers and advance those numbers that's close to be out there. Anyway. From 617. She can -- starter 3161000. Dollar no show job again I assumed he she there is. Michelle -- as she did have a cushy job. And let's say 617. Also offered dead idiot Deval Patrick his words not mine idiot Deval Patrick was the 2012 version of Howard Dean. Okay your thoughts are welcome here. The shocked a little bad about the convention and unload those sort opened politics. Out there who wanna do progression so we got some some cool clips. That we're going to play that well we hope will brighten your day -- His Clint Eastwood movie has become a percentage in this campaign would say will make your day. Your telephone lines failure first dubbed you the Irish. That should I call Levy how do you know -- what's good for the goose is it's supposed to be good for the gambit. But and mr. Obama is. Case it's not okay now his wife that is to Romney's wife governor Romney let me get up bits and -- And everything good about what her husband did this and did that would be bad and then it's quite -- to talk about him. But still under -- Michelle Obama does it's it's a different stories now in my own words in my opinion. As Mitt Romney was -- witness I would love that is so I was born -- -- is the gap but I've Goldman school okay. Any good and and and the weights and his wife talked about it's like. Dates lived in the basement apartment dog and then he has five kids screamed -- her background rainy -- states. We poke -- to all the time OK okay yeah I don't cute she probably had help doing it. OK. Okay well that ended August 4 period you support -- I think about mr. Obama put up learned about the and he employment situation. You people are able now to notice schedule you people and I'm now able to know. That he received support purity. Notes from his. From this press. -- -- -- -- They'll they'll. Hmmm let's let's take some things in order you may not necessarily in order to let's take what you said okay first of all those numbers. I understand the present in the United States has a privileged position. You don't you don't you just -- -- -- you have a chance only downloaded yet another short you don't don't turnaround and the hill right middle and time. Here's my own program I should be allowed to speak on the issue oh well no but I guess what thank. I understand that the president has a privileged position. But my understanding also is that those numbers those job numbers first bush released to the whole world. At the same time at 8:30 in the morning okay he got the mini mansion I'm I'm not particularly. Concerned about that I do think. You know for a fact I think we do know a few you know let's hope that it got -- -- I spill would duplicate that on the chopping block. The old -- that yes you would I drive okay now. We will establish that. -- I ask where they you know you want to make it sound like they had made that the Romney senate made I don't think they did. We don't hold loan bill are you wish for heaven's sake belt. But. I didn't PO I expected Michelle Obama is gonna say nice things about her judgment -- Romney did the same thing there is this different. We knew about Obama already. You know Michelle Obama really didn't need to bring us up on the background where we're familiar with. Barack Obama so hers was more a matter GA he's a great guy vote for him. -- then Romney there was this difference the world that does not know much about Mitt Romney. And one of the things that. Hadn't had to be done with Mitt Romney was. Well the term that's been used as humanize him in the -- being introduced but he also was we were finding out about him as a real live human being. That he wasn't quite as aloof and distances it distances you come across. The like ability factor that people talk about this is why Enron usually -- others did too there are others at the convention talked about the things she's done for them when -- Child who shape of the film is having -- -- But it was more information because there was no more material. -- faulting Michelle Obama. I'm just simply saying. That I don't think she did a lot of good for Barack Obama I think her speech was effective and everybody came way liking her more. But do what she said about Barack Obama. Wasn't really new to us and therefore probably didn't move things and also Barack Obama didn't need much more. By way of like ability core war human net says you work. Mitt Romney did. He did. People like you are not going to be influenced by that because you're gonna decide that because he's rich he shouldn't get your vote. Because he is black hairy shouldn't get your vote because his last name begins within our -- and get your vote now. People who are against a candidate are against -- candidate. It's like those who say not gonna vote for Barack Obama didn't read his -- read in the releases college transcript well now if you're anxious college transcript. Those people wouldn't support Barack Obama. -- folks like you. Have a litany of reasons why you're not in favor Mitt Romney and even if you were to be able to get rid of those he's still wouldn't be in favor. Mitt Romney. There it turned out Mitt Romney grow up really pork it's still not supported that's a good bill. It's okay their people on on both sides. But let's not make it sound that somehow these are the telling dispositive argument. You know -- if if only you knew for sure that she didn't have a made to help with their five children then -- we change your vote though it worked. -- -- Actually called nice to know that there the people on the other side then listen programming calling him. From seven they won this guy is -- number -- throw him off. Okay he's gone feel better. 877469432. -- the phone numbers she isn't going to own them 339 text message. Would you discuss. Why Michelle and Barry short Toro I'm not sure that that's Obama's real name that. Lost their law license. And this is one of those things that's spiraling around in this. Then it's not because of all sorts of the legalities detection and it's not gonna influence anyone's throat so we're not gonna go into it. Could you lose people -- -- 339. If you think you're gonna convinced there about 10% undecided. The ratio give or take 4545. Well you get 4644. Inch analog variation which roughly 454510. If you think you're gonna convince the undecided it's like talking about their -- licenses. You're just way off base. She does decide whether you're gonna -- things that make you feel good. Or you gonna shake things that maybe he can influence the election toward the guy you want to win. That's what it's about. I know sometimes we indulge ourselves that's where it's about. We -- patient knows something. The Democrats. And mr. Obama had not been good with regard to their stewardship of the American economy lest we be accused of following in their footsteps. Good afternoon ivory you know the people's party had their gathering this past week. In all we heard was class walked -- our free lunch in subsidized tax. That. Hit. Well we did the idea that brings up the last when I bring a -- brings -- or James Sandra flock spelled fluke but pronounced flock. And I don't know if you heard her speech rush that she was shot -- -- gets this. Arrogant selfish self righteous tone ensures beside yourself. That Mitt Romney didn't cash -- -- Rush Limbaugh when Rush Limbaugh had said some bad things about her flock. You know after a testimony to congress and she talked about how this how. -- Romney really shouldn't be president because of that. Now for first of all Limbaugh apologized for the remarks. Secondly he was castigated by everybody. And thirdly and most importantly. You notice how she conveniently. Never mentioned Bill Maher. Who -- things about women so vile that I could not repeat the language on this program would not repeat -- I -- end and he's given a million dollars. To a super -- to support. The Obama campaign and Obama do the best of my knowledge has never said word one in condemnation. Of bill more. -- -- -- You know. Droning on about Rasheed just beside yourself nodding his Mitt Romney should need to and maybe get a radio commentator did. The army let me pick a line from the late. They're out there. They are in deep pitching well that's the problem. They are out there and and that's why it's a close race which means we have to redouble our efforts in the remaining two months till the election. And obviously you're reading The Herald that it would definitely help whether imagine that. New Hampshire might be the deciding factor of those four electoral votes may make a difference in this particular ways. And I think all of us conservatives who really believe in the live free or die. We should be spending that much time as we can open New Hampshire helping -- Mitt Romney he get those four electoral votes. We don't think we'll get you'll get the Massachusetts twelve. Are you kidding me let -- I didn't -- are you kidding me. Hey I got demoted -- I got demoted to Jerry just -- -- is not even there anymore. The they believe me if you think we can put back affront to Islam ignorance so the next sixty days. You know hole. -- in your -- fuel and enjoy -- I am I more optimism than is warranted by the real world not Ross thank you thank thanks -- -- and I. 8774694322%. Anyone. Texted me and said del Gallo just report Obama 49. Rummy forty -- rumors says forward -- for a for a well okay and and the Rasmussen today reported 4644. Obama Mitchell -- after the convention still shot. Because they -- 4545. Give or take a point. -- There was Rasmussen there are still. They're still 10%. Undecided and -- normally some optimism here for those of us who want to make a change. The undecideds usually split for the challenger -- words if you're undecided after four years of the incumbent. You haven't young men sold on that he usually in the end you you break. The majority of the undecideds will break for the challenger so this goes in really to push to call and by the way the race in the swing states -- According to Rasmussen did I think there one point apart. That that is grounds for some optimism. 8774694322. Is the a phone number and Billy you are next on the program good afternoon. I don't think it. And didn't want to make a -- armor until all our jobs Bill Clinton. Speech. Yeah simply. Put -- all -- go to hell because he says to go. Then I say -- -- he's absolutely right. Think so yeah I don't believe those polls that there are people in my book Greg and stuff like yeah. You go out forty and forty filed a little so I -- a -- and you know. What went out and probably won't turn you know we know everybody. Everybody bode for the conservative. You know and I would believe any col -- I believe. You are. What -- it if you don't believe the polls where you think the race stands. But I say if you don't believe the polls. Where do you think the race stands right now. I think it's -- and I think people already have decided to go to woke up. So I gotta -- so window -- and almost -- -- -- I am I go to different. Four food source close to meet. I almost didn't -- -- all of -- week more like you don't ego people have decided I think already. Yeah. Alarm. Hole -- -- call then Billy who wins over one. Well what about other arena BI the -- that. Doubt in my opinion. Okay Romo -- usually issue think it's already had a done deal who's gonna win in November. Well nobody should not been there done PL you know you know what I listen to. A lot of politics so it's. You know you yeah you're -- they didn't expect it felt like he's got married -- didn't want to see people imagine there's no. I don't go -- yeah yeah yeah you know I don't know it. I we -- -- -- conducted a -- speech out of all of our beat you know no and download. It's our home. What is there. Home. -- if -- at least -- I learned a bit and actually job you don't know your -- you. Know people might call -- -- really really before you know who's gonna win. I hope inflation. Wrong. I mean OK I do thanks very -- -- funny -- the -- drawing the polls -- Rory decided to. You know get. Mission 617 Gallup poll was a registered voters yeah I didn't -- the Gallup poll usually does register Rasmussen -- likely voters. Then make sure Rasmussen poll more accurate. Right because he's dealing with the universe that is likely to determine the election. As a registered voters will matter and matter if you're registered non -- not so. And that usually does have a difference because the Romney's supporters are more diligent about burning. Okay what do we have here we have some comic relief regularly and sometimes an -- they've all been holding on but let's. That one of the remarkable things about the Democratic Convention was there Tom Menino. From -- that distinguish Boston mayor the great the great to order the LAQ -- Expert. You're speaking we got a couple of very brief clip -- go away if you of those young logo by back to -- I thought it was important to highlight Porsche that's run some of those. They promised to bring business. The states. Paint bing vision -- to this central promise to bring business to the states. It's I have to bring business to us today. Know what else do we know this contract and become great by exploring folks. Who -- and I showed him. Did he says it's not like -- and exploding folks that the united insurance they exclude foods. Governor mommy is now Brian away from a major accomplishments. -- Health Care Reform that. He called immortal for our country immortal but not immortal for our country. I hope we imclone that. He still looks bored I'll logjam in debt by two point six billion dollars. Then exploded -- that both two point six billion -- probably meant trillion but then again there are millions of students have come to study. Men -- our great American name. My global quick can Joan yeah. Did he say Martin Luther King Jr. not I don't know -- American. Movement and I mad men. I -- more than forward. Moo -- and forward -- television more forward temporary getting really -- that I should pay more for all -- more and forward. It's -- you know and she is make your pitch for the dairy industry with a with the -- -- -- -- -- It's a national embarrassment ensure the municipal embarrassment barrage raw crude reporting -- and if you are in charge of the Democratic National Convention the whole world is watching. -- is this what you want to present as emblematic of your party there they just wanted. Guys like Obama and Clinton sound better. So they have the before as well as we have to. -- I'll pick -- okay speech impediment but I'd. There are problems with who it's Tom Menino including ripping up the constitution. And thinking that people who. Have business shares and whose opinion he doesn't agree where it's namely chick filet owner. That they somehow shouldn't be allowed. To function in Boston I know he's recanted. But he recanted only because of the outrage not because he saw the error of his philosophical -- Time your next on the program good afternoon. Take a -- -- you do about east I think you took out the window. David from Brookline. But Utah when you're being fair -- Obama and as far as the law licenses but it. I guess one thing that. Why am very disappointed with President Obama. Is. -- -- Always -- these guilt trips on people vote in my in my brother's keeper and you're probably aware of his brother. George Obama who's living in squalor pretty much in -- it's not brother. You're going to try and by the way for those who are not familiar with -- go to the movie shoot the movie 2016. And you'll get. Good exposure to that. I'm gonna I'm gonna see that night in Foxboro as matter of fact it. The other point is is that what -- Mitt Romney. Regardless of his political affiliation in his views. He donates. An awful lot of money percentage wise. Up more than 10%. To charities. And what -- I listen to this. This holier than -- moral platitudes. About I am my brother's keeper -- here's Mitt Romney to win. The rights saying. You know of where I'm assuming he donates the Mormon Church or or or whatever I don't know what is charities are but. He's helping out less fortunate people that he doesn't beat on his chest. And here's Obama who is you know new money's worth millions of dollars and it's like you you can't afford to send your half brother few grand here in the air. I think you're actually right time it is just remarkable if you see that movie and thank you for the point if you see that movie. You'll see that the brother half brother really dove who does live in squalor and -- and a half brother. Is reasonably articulate reasonably educated the point that you made the movie she doesn't appear to agree about the anti colonialism. That is so much a part of of Barack Obama's background. But that this guy should live in -- hi I'm telling you you shoot a picture you wouldn't put your dog in the -- the fusion. And yet Obama. Barack Obama apparently.
