Avi Nelson - Todd Akin and Neil Armstrong
Sat, 25 Aug 2012|
Once again, a high-magnitude political earthquake has shaken the campaign for control of the U.S. Senate. And once again, the epicenter was a historic 19th century brick manse a few miles outside Columbus, Ohio. That’s where Missouri Rep. Todd Akin arrived midday Monday in an urgent effort to rescue his bid against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. The Republican congressman threw his campaign into a state of crisis last weekend when he told a local TV interviewer that he believed victims of rape rarely become pregnant. Avi explains what Akin's intentions may have been and talks about the passing of Neil Armstrong, telling some fairly unknown stories about the first mission to the moon.

Text message coach Dick Cheney -- shady in an email address and Nelson until we -- KO dot com. Well in the run up to the convention and will affect the conventional exposure in terms of well how. Things are going to play out. We have the ongoing saga soap opera of Todd -- congressmen who was in good position to win. The senate seat. In Missouri. Until he made that rather bizarre remark about. About rape. And now by the way to show you the fallout from that Romney was leading in that stayed and now that lead is gone. Aiken was leading in -- stayed and now he trails by -- last poll I saw something like ten points. It's also shifted the focus. It shifted the focus from. The the economic issues which are the important ones to the social issues. Or at least this particular social ritual question about abortion and an array of the Accenture. Do which is not where the town where the Republicans wanna be. And it's also not where the electorate wants to be -- in this is not the defining issue this election. Anyway he. He made the comment that you know if there's some legitimate use the word legitimate. The legitimate -- that. That the U woman's body has a way of shutting that down then that he used the word legitimate. Mean much has been made about this -- part of the problem is that her reminding you know much about him before this. Then. My part of a problem here's an -- himself has done especially articulate. So even when he's been called on to explain defend refute his remarks she doesn't do it very well. The word legitimate as she used it meant he meant real not legitimate in the sense of OK or sanction. And he was obviously trying to differentiate. That from say what was called statutory rape. You know for a sixteen year old. Boy has that has sexual relations with a fifteen year old girlfriend in the whole thing is consensual. It's still statutory rape as opposed to force trip where they'll. The -- woman doesn't want any part today and the rape occurs anyway that's where he was taught them by name is real -- We can't put aside this notion wish I'd never heard before. That somehow the woman's body can shut down the pregnancy. Because she really is opposed to the approved the way the pregnancy was initiated. What I've never heard of such as a medical theory I checked with a couple of doctors. And I think you know they've studied this stuff. And -- came back and says it's complete nonsense there's there's no such there. So I don't know where -- came up with this cock and bull story. -- on the men's 65 years old he's spinning in political life for some time. Did you think he would have a vague idea that there are certain things you don't say even if you hold the position to to be true. Measure it was just that awfully stupid remark. And some remarks like is there a lot of stupid remarks made in in the course of campaigns right. Everybody makes -- some of them he get by and some of them can be fatal. Now and this one is a fatal remark -- trouble is that Aiken -- and recognize the fatality. Of course he is the totality self. So we staying in the race. Now there is up to I think -- September 25. Where he can still get out although it's not easy is awarded then heading out now a couple of days ago was another deadline there. And will. We'll see what happens. But now of course there is the whole question about rape and and where you know there's just say abortion in the case of rape and incest. And in the Republican platform which is the same as it was -- in prior years. There's no exception made for that Mitt Romney's position is different. Ryan's positions closer to the Republican platform. But he has immediately said that he would defer to Romney in them that porsches or asked to be be running. Is the president. Now I happen not to be sympathetic with that position -- always has the pro life position has been gaining strength with the American electric. Part of that probably is the advances in technology. You know where the ultrasound and other things where women can actually. CE or have a better idea. Of what the fetus is it makes it more like. It's a human life and therefore there's more reluctant to terminate the pregnancy and kill the fetus. That -- however. It's not where the Republicans wanna be discussing this and by the way I must say also that if you're position. Is that life begins at conception. Then why should there be an exception made for rape or incest. I mean if if you think that the fetus is human life then. Why would you kill that human life for just because the pregnancy. Has some extraordinary vision are or unpleasant aspects of around -- it's consistent intellectual position. A lot of us who have trouble saying that this this smidgen of proto plunge in which if you put it on the on the counter. Who would be what the -- the size of a point of opinion. Rich a tiny amount if you hit that with a hammer that is not the same as hitting the person next few with a hammer. Now may not be able to tell you when life actually begins but that is just it's just different. And and so there is a there is just a quantitative difference between the man is frequently the case she got a and up in the grad I just see there's a headline here that astronaut Neil Armstrong. Has died at the age of 82. I think that's. The news wire and John it's not. It's not connected to anything but of course we all remember. This is one of the the men of the century. Because nice these. Finish of stepping on the the first up on the moon. I'm I'm obviously and diverting as you just saw I just came across that line to the famous comment that he made to resist. One small step it was -- one small step for any man. One giant leap for mankind. It sounds like he said in the comment is always repeated. As one small step for man one giant leap for mankind which frankly doesn't make any sense. If you if you broad man I mean man that context doesn't mean mankind. So one small step for man one giant leap -- man. It's contradiction one small step for amen meaning he had taken one step in yet it was a giant leap for mankind that does make sense. I always thought that the most telling first words from the moon or not that the first words from the moon were. When we were who were the words broadcast. From. The capsule that it landed called eagle. And the transmission was. Tranquility base here the eagle has landed. Indicating that they had landed on the moon and what was important about that is first it was it was really those were the first words spoken and secondly. It showed the discipline of the mission. There was no blocking rule were nowadays view war trying to make some great philosophical comment. They had a mission and the first thing they had to do was report back to Houston. That. That they had landed and the response was. You have -- he has some people turning blue or words to that fact because everybody was holding their breath upon itself. -- I'm drawing dead at age 82. The first man to. Set -- on the moon and from that point on now of course you made a lot of a lot of progress in space. And now we're talking much going to -- She'll -- I don't know that there is you can go to with Vista version much further metal if you wanna talk about that that she. That's fine it's it's really remarkable. As I get I'm just thinking back the total computer power. The entire. A rocket that they and and the capsule. And much bullet went to the go to the moon and also the the space vehicle that went from -- -- to the moon had a computer power. Roughly equivalent to today's black top one laptop. Should you know just remarkable that but they were able to do it because one on the story that that comes to mind. Is when they. Went to leave the moon some of those of us who remember watched the moon landing and who watched the departure from whom the mood there was a lot of tension. Because there was concern that if there that if the rocket didn't work to get the lunar module off the surface of the moon. And back to the orbiting vehicle bonds. There -- gonna die in the moment to be stranded -- there was actually no way that any English Q could be mounted. And the interest in story which was unknown at the time. Is at the switch. To. To ignite there was it was two chemicals that came together that that we're going to ignite the fuel to take the module off the moon. And what was not known I guess until. Right at the end is that when they were putting on one of them it's not clear with a was Holdren -- Armstrong Buzz Aldrin was the other. The other astronauts in the module and capsule. When one of them was putting on their helmet -- face helmet. They had unbeknownst to them accidentally hit that switch and broken it off. Sure when it came time to throw the switch. There was no switch the switch was broken. And it was Buzz Aldrin who had the presence of mind. To take a pen. And he had to take a pen that was not metal. Because of the use of metal and he would shorted out the switch he took a plastic pen. Own and use that to depress the button that was the switch. And that was how they threw the switch and that ignited the fuel and got them off the moon back to the -- To the orbiter or -- about. And it was not known until I get short considerably aftermath. Building an interest and now -- know both depart from this -- and normal but much more material that fingertips. Is that when they were looking to land. They place where they were going. How Washington good landing Churchill they had a fly a little bit more. And it turned out by the time they landed they only have thirty seconds of fuel left. So it's really remarkable that this could have been carried off. In 1969 fulfilling president Kennedy's. Prophecy that before the end of the decade we were put a man. On the moon and bring him back. Neil Armstrong. Dead today that age 82 just came across the the usual Irish. If you're just joining us a little bit of a diversion there this is on the Nelson welcome to the program. Of course I didn't have any intention of talking about space your space exploration today. We are on the eve of the Republican Convention and loan was mentioning the -- Todd Akins remark with regard to abortion and thought I grave and the implications for the political more than philosophical. You'd like to join with us our phone numbers 877. 4694322. Email address say Nelson at wrko.com. And the text message code is 68680. Okay -- a little bit before the one other thing that I won't but talk in terms of the run up. We're talking about gaps and I talked about the one with Todd they -- but. Nearly gaff master here is. Is Joseph Biden name buffoon in chief for gap in chief of the memorial or more recent comments he made is. About the -- change that this. That Romney is gonna put you all back in changed -- say in changed it back in change because later the the White House tried to deny that. That he was were making a reference to slavery. But it makes no sense that to be anything else if you put the back end. You know what you all who was -- southern actions that we all back in change. Romney wants to let that he said the first hundred days he's good the big banks once again right through rules. Aren't changed. Wall Street. They're gonna put you all back in shaves. Now while backing change this context only if you're referring that there -- change in the first place right. And what would that be except. Slavery. Just finishing they try to deny words have meaning and no joy as trouble with words. But they do have meaning anyway. Charlie Rangel hard Lee -- staunch conservative right the black Democrat. Congressional Black Caucus member from New York. Who is very much on the other side politically for me anyway. And certainly on the democratic side we've been there forever. He said. But the gap indeed was a reference to slavery. You're not a radio show. And here's the quote. From Charlie Rangel. Was he talking about slavery you bet -- she wasn't sharp for the language under -- use that but that's what he said. Continuing with the quote was using the vernacular that's a better word -- to use on the program. Was -- using the vernacular yes she wise. Do you think it was cute yes she did what does something stupid to say you bet your life there was stupid. Unquote. Usually that's honesty from somebody on the left. Rangel was not known for his honesty and other dealings by the way. From dubious financial dealings but anyway. Talk about -- know which one is more significant which one is more important. Which one has gotten more coverage from the media. One last point and then -- go to the telephone calls. 47%. The -- -- poll published done it on August 21. Point twelve. 47%. -- media bias is a bigger problem then campaign contributions. 42%. Disagree with 47%. Nearly half the population and more than half. Think that the media is biased in favor of Obama and want to embed I want Obama. Two win. So. There where they wish him in terms of the context of. The beginning or the eve of the Republican National Convention was gonna take place starting on Monday in in Florida. Pitcher got a couple of -- -- text messages here. From 617 or somebody who say you moon landing was a mirage. Yeah I remember that that was very big in the sixties that was given a movie. -- I was actually filmed in the Arizona desert we never went there but I. Sure. Let's see from 603 okay well bacon said was very stupid. But what about Obama voting for infanticide when he was a senator in Illinois. Yes good point this is the partial birth abortion. And for Obama -- when he was a senator voted -- three times not even to try to save the life of the aborted fetus. So now which one. Which one is. Barry are that helps here wanted to talk about the economy but it's been I mean it's sad to hear about Armstrong's death zealous I remember that day quite well announced its its interesting to hear how. See how that phrase has been adapted her. Misconstrued that. If I remember right. I -- very last step. Down on the very bottom you know even those the moon landing they were sitting inside when they said. That they had landed right but that's the the actual step off the latter. It was just like what of one foot. Dropped from the fact lesson that a matter. You know I thought I had the moderate changes in my recollection is that that -- template global law -- almost had a jump off the last step below their onto lunar surface. You know I just depend Wheldon had to circle at the base of its -- as -- whether or not she jumped off the last wrong or yeah I. But in any case it's yeah it's a shame he died. Hey you know what I'm interest didian. I don't know if you keeping up on a scandal called Libor allies feel war. But -- is essentially a London Interbank exchange and although I think there eighteen of those world's biggest banks that take part in this. They -- that the interest rates for the world. And days and this is whether it's credit card rates are bond issues -- You know for sewer bonds of New York City I mean this is. The bond issues. Yeah there was a story in the news about this sharing your right go ahead. Right so basically what has happened is these eighteen largest banks in the world were fraud in the numbers. And when they fraud in the numbers they essentially were able to Jack up the interest rates for everybody. Basically in perpetuity. Because. The if they set interest rates for one day at a given -- And bond issue for a sewer system guts on that day then that's thirty year bond issue got. Got essentially. Jacked because of -- numbers. And if there was a Bloomberg article that was written up about this about two weeks ago. And they had to make a correction. And then in the original article lace said it was a six billion dollar fraud in the corrections made it -- six trillion dollar fraud. Well so VMware also. -- just. A fraud being on that moment. Came to be a six trillion but there are now talking about possibly 400 trillion there's it's unbelievable. Now when I hear about these politicians. Telling Greece that there broke. Oh or. You know telling Italy that there broker telling America is post office would ask of -- Or whether or not Social Security is broke no. This is based on -- numbers. These are fake numbers and they're projecting budgets based upon interest rates and and well stand and -- Which is based upon fraudulent numbers. Well -- You know -- and I remember as you mentioned I remember reading this story about W there was some kind of scandal having to do with this. There's Lundin group. I don't know about the numbers are being touched and throwing around numbers like forty trillion that's. As awful big number so I -- I mean I would. They expect that we are indeed having financial difficulties I don't know what the magnitude it is and -- Sure at some point you get you get straight now but I don't think we should. Not getting straight brought in as a matter of fact Geithner. Has refused to prosecuted because he's so good it was local. It was a crime that happened in London. And so it does not need to be investigated. By the you know I mean when I should straightened out and thank you for the call that I -- industry now I mean eventually you will get some numbers. That that that people can agree on but the fact is are we -- They're huge unfunded liabilities were short distance from Greece but we are tracking on the same path. Which is unfortunately the case. The for for this country. 87746943. -- -- speaking the scandal and and numbers that we go all the followers in just seeing it came across an article. -- this is August 23 and political commentary. Did you cut it it shelters -- A column by Michael Barone and you may be familiar with these on television as well as being well long political analyst. Any -- and we'll look at the title the the column. Color should. Betrays where it goes GM -- General Motors goes from bad to worse despite Obama bailout. Normal things -- point down in this column is that the government still homes government you know we. Owned 500 million share issue a General Motors -- 26% of the total. And I think if the government or we need to sell. Those shares for 53 dollars a share to recover the 52 billion dollar bailout. Unfortunately for us the stock price is around twenty. Okay we need to be at 53. It is it twenty. And treasury department of treasury now now estimates of the government will lose more than 245 billion. When -- shelves if it sells that stock well government loses we lose. This give you an idea for those who are crowing about how wonderful finish for the -- you know that they gee what a great thing Obama dead. Not shown -- financially. 8774694322. Is the phone number 686 CD. Is the text message code. Email address a Nelson at wrko.com. Back to -- stay good afternoon you're next on the program. I have a you know I wanted to talk about the the big lie again you know the comment made by agent. Although. Individuals like myself and others they wouldn't really. Surprised by his comments I mean he has made. Assertions before -- along this line I mean he's sponsored bills. You know what all right but it definition. Rates so it really resonate. Surprise in the Republican this. Scrambling sponsor -- he started trouble these sponsored bill but the definition of free. No no he's also the bill -- all right. To get -- definition. A great. Now she's now on if you don't have to take my -- RB eagle it. He went and had the definition of rape. No hit at all right after the bill yeah but it definition of rape it. And trot on the Eagles. Definition of rapists from -- -- yeah yeah. They you have to practice speaking English on the program -- I don't know what you're talking about well you know Ali you know there was there was -- There was a bill day which you may be referring to that I should do with funding. For abortion if you're rich you -- caused by rape or incest. And that's -- that's a disagreement that people haven't talked about it a little bit on the program earlier. There are some people who would say that even -- -- rape or incest abortion should not be allowed and certainly should not be funded. By the government by you -- me. And that right but that's a different issue and right -- and I'll say it again if you believe. That life begins at conception. And that position makes sense doesn't it. Well you know obvious again it's it's it's still amazing to me I mean but then again it's not. You know this is the -- -- -- -- of -- the government is daddy alive but then they want the government to be involved in the bedroom in what you do. Behind closed doors I think it is. Look real it's what I wanted to touch on the -- -- we thought we share are non religious right. My comment the English. -- of that but you she's in Berlin that the talk about this -- you brought it out. -- with regard to ensure the government in your life the government out of your life. The government does stepping in and say you can't kill someone. Now if you wanna say that that's a mile an intrusion in your life well I suppose it is it's a restriction. But that's that's something that some of us would say is appropriate government action. The reason he gets blurry. All abortion question is is very hard to define. When life begins even you would say that if you -- a half months pregnant and you've killed the fetus that you've killed a human life. But some people say that on day one if you kill with the issue kill human life not -- that position. And I understand the problem. Bobby just just to clarify something before I go to my lap point I'm actually against. Abortion but I'm not gonna -- woman what to do with the body. What -- if you're against a -- why you against abortion. Well because I I I I I think that. That it is taking other human life. But gave his I think it's. Hobby that's my feeling I can't control and I do not want to control. What a woman does that her body -- -- they. Don't like you. But don't have women in their lives but don't have time to make comments about everyone men. Wait a minute and then never -- me you shouldn't they get to the taking of human life. And you're gonna below that supposing the mother decides to take for human life after the baby is born. Bobby that's totally different you won't hear it yeah why can't -- embedded totally different. Because obviate quit talking Apollo when the baby is in the won't -- still on the topic that I can opt. You're saying it's a human not a fact would you change its human life. -- -- It open it but I just want to touch on my last point. Now I'm point was about you know I mean I don't -- this is the deal -- the Republicans do would talk radio that. And you know it's a famous client suddenly Atwater. You know when he said you know that you don't really have to say each and word -- -- fat dog with political word. You know what Romney said about Obama on the stump speech -- absolutely this. Picabo lives and they did Ed why you would elicit you know exactly what -- -- I don't know if you don't have to worry about where. Him and his -- was born. You know they're dead -- I can live. From oh for heaven's -- I get back I get the dear god he really got me but I do all that. Other Romney slot guy is -- still -- -- catering to your -- He's made it to the gutless -- about the call yourself. Do any candidate to -- not god wrote anything Apollo -- let me -- or -- -- skater you. Or you take care of this that dear god before. Before you called in there were people who anticipated your call -- I mean -- -- you know it's not people lucky. King stopped talking I really asked the question yet. Think we got some text messages -- no -- ask you about the month bank from 61 Shannon. It says she did Dave calls in asking this question are you a racist. Are you. That's the stupid question now. No no -- it yeah I just don't like you people why can't I -- -- what they think the event. You what are you can never move when they come out you know that they -- appropriate channel one. And I gave you one more question -- and first run on different 61 shall I write this is Dave says. Moon landing was a mirage do you think was summarized in. And it said that mobile world so that's why we're used to it yet I got it I mean that I never had that not do you think do you think the Moulin Rouge real. Yeah like you guys -- loan to -- the last question and I did not think this is a point. You cannot have a constructive debate back and book you have to call people names like you're at it called. Jill Biden need someone -- -- get a pack one Q hi -- better put did help between you like to pay no hope I'm not -- this. You know something -- I've never made the comment about putting all back in change like the. No I absolutely want all of -- -- -- on the clock. -- this is what you guys. -- they've Dave good guard Charlie Rangel agreed with many viewers are racist remark. It was a stupid remark putter which are good days. With regard to that. All right now let. One last point we've got to go was to a break but I do wanna make the point about the the comment where Ronnie made the joke who's talking there in Michigan. He talked about he was born in the hospital there and I am. His wife was born and our hospital there and any joked. That nobody's ever asked about the birth certificate that more -- okay. Don't taking everything seriously. Olmert albeit she heard about trying to invest in that series now birth are. That's not what he was talked combined all it was just. Alike remark and it was -- cute joke there's now only you're the racism the birth of her shoe is nothing to do with a race anyway. -- It's just absurd that some people took it seriously mean that Dave would take it seriously I understand -- he has trouble. Putting things together but there are some others you do as well. Welcome back this -- in Austin now for number 8774694322. We'll talk a little more about the. Convention and maybe some other issues what Romney -- to do should do. On the other side in the news break a couple of road trip he enjoys Kellen gave DF the text messages going. And we got some interest in Orange. From 617. Just can't firstly did in his party want government out of the bedroom or want taxpayers to fund contraceptives. An abortion -- that's not exactly the government outright. From 781. Dave needs to check his -- bill should define rape as a violent act not daydream try and that's.
