Avi Nelson - Adam Smith's Chick-Fil-A Video
Sat, 4 Aug 2012|
The man who lost his job after posting online his rant against a Chick-fil-A staff member has taken to the Internet again to express an apology for his actions. Adam Smith, the former CFO of an Arizona-based medical device manufacturer, seemed contrite and expressed special praise for the Chick-fil-A employee who he berated for the chain's anti-gay marriage stance. Avi talks about Adam's video, as well as bringing in Menino's actions towards Chick-Fil-A.

Good afternoon. I don't know any real -- it's very common in cars. There's a summer day -- some little love this nocturnal world and Jeff did you play on the ball from non playing game may be back. Otherwise. Anyway enjoy. Find a place that's comfortable join the program we help you will participate the phone numbers 8774694322. And. -- to make some little more comfortable Lutz told free. Situation HA is the text message code. In the email address and Nelson at wrko.com. Well a couple of smaller stores to begin -- that would get into some of the new year once. You're watching the Olympics why I -- from time to time OK -- know a little bit and interest and partly because. Hey if you're going to be involved in the world -- radio pro you have no idea where it's all about a pro the ratings have been very good for the Olympics. But -- hundred it seemed like there must be 500 swimming events. Every time I tune in their swimming. Had -- a better they have gymnastics. And they give cesspool of volleyball and all their whole bunch of other sports going on. And you never see them a law as I say I I confessional. I haven't watched it all the all. But they do that and then. I guess it's on the news rather on the Olympics are quite frankly I am not Rangers did. In seeing somebody's mother rooting for some athletes I got it I know she's learning Korean murder win. But they -- not. I'm tired of it and then then you have the interviews. Not necessarily with the athletes you've got those of course they asked the same inane questions all the time. How do you feel powering the metal -- he feels lowering the metal. But then they have these interviews with friends in the community where the persons from this especially in Massachusetts. And there are times where they show. Groups of people in the community -- come together to watch the Olympics on television. So I find myself here I am sitting there. Watching television of people who are watching television. And quite frankly. I don't care what they're doing in -- -- I like this can -- local local hero so you watch you pay -- -- why should that be of interest to me. So anyway I guess I'm not completely caught up in the spirit of miniature grand spectacle. The opening ceremonies are full of pomp and circumstance or circuit bump -- stance. Number well there's something about the best athletes in the world competing -- they never show the world championships. So mean that as it may your thoughts and the Olympics are welcome if you want. Don't know -- hope pine or wind. Or contradictory and saying I don't I think I've talked to people who think it is just wonderful watching the Olympics and just can't get enough of herself well okay. In Choi eleven different subject now in 2011 there were 101000. Terrorist attacks ten I wasn't. In the year tornado. The good news and that by the way led to 121500. Deaths. Management that's an awful lot of people to be killed. In in in terrorist activities. 64%. Of them were in Afghanistan and Iraq and Pakistan. And by the way -- I as your call that was actually down on the number was down from twenty chance. I -- a -- and I don't know where we go with this except to understand that the the war on terrorism. Goes on and -- don't want to go on forever. No there's no gore no signing of surrender on the battleship Missouri is there was at the end of World War II it's not that kind of -- war. It's nod he stage. I shot -- Iran comes pretty close. Certainly in Iran as a sponsor of these terrorist activities. But you have -- people motivated by religion my god told me to do it when she gets to that level. Very little that can be done so this is your idea continual. Operation continual. Objective. Of civilized people everywhere to try to combat -- -- monolith thing in the in the small category a little bit. A little bit lighter than. The point about terrorism. And then is I noted. That I saw back to school had some before the end of July I -- should be in -- law against. Well at the school. -- in ended school ended just a month ago. Now already there -- back to school that. We -- me two things one. How commercial we become that my gosh is trying to show people things already. And the second is of course a harbinger. At the end of summer is coming. Remember making observation which I have every year. We have Memorial Day. It seems like the whole summer you -- reviewed July 4 is over a month the way it. It it looks like -- large expanse of time. Then in July 4 comes and before you know now back to school it's Labor Day will be here and there will be the annual lament where did this summer ago. It's actually my favorite season is the fault. I know for a lot of years the summer. Okay and one other thing. That I noted an on the calendar must confess I did not have this its fingertips Thursday. Was national friendship day. The fact that I mentioned say nobody out there -- -- that. May say something about the state of friendship here and in the country. But there was national friendship day you're probably a worthy thing to think about. We missed it so. Never mind you can prepare. For next year. Okay. Now on to. Some of the some -- -- more serious issues of the day if you're just joining us good afternoon. I'm -- Nelson welcome to the program. We told through numbers 8774694322. They text message code is 68680. And the email address and Nelson had wrko.com. Well there -- a number of issues that do would be nice to get to today. Not liberal starred. With the one fashion do with chick fillet. And a different take on it. Adam Smith -- that's his real name by the way I don't think there is an economist. Who took the pseudonym Adam Smith. As a reflection national -- some might say homage been -- -- it was very upset when he did it. Of the Adam Smith who wrote the wealth of nations one of the earliest founding documents -- wonderful statement about capitalism and free enterprise. I'm sure Elizabeth Warren training for the classic comic to come out before she reads it. In any event this is a different and Smith. Who this guy. Where -- -- made a video of himself. As he rolled to a chick fillet. A story I guess in Tucson. Because he wanted to make his statement. He didn't like the chick -- attitude that should change the attitude of the president. With regard to homosexual marriage. Show he was going to go on make a -- makes a big thing about showing. -- the video himself. He says I may have a few words assay. Think -- to the window and there's this gal there who is from Chicago. They give free water. And he stars parading her and she keeps her cool which is really good which I think incensed him all the more. And one point he really gets nasty with -- and in the end she maintained. A quiet calm demeanor disposition. And he drives away. Palatial proud of himself as to what he's done you -- and this runaway issues. When he was employed who would get to that. This is a father of four I mean this isn't just some college student who had a couple of -- two drinks to men. He's so proud of himself he post the video. We have a little bit of a clip but this right as it's not the whole thing is that it's a little too long. But where it gets really ugly I think we have the audio part of this show -- English run the clip. I don't know how you wouldn't tell me and work here I don't understand this is a horrible corporation was horrible values like you deserve better really. You deserve better -- so you better thank. I well I just did some really good at the purposeful and somewhat. Okay I'm a nice guy by the way and I'm totally heterosexual. I'm not not a game mean I just cant stand hate you know you gotta stop stop stop guys. Standout. I see guys. Cant stand hate fan -- it sounds like you're pretty hate filled as a matter of fact. So maybe you should look in the mirror. Anyway I was very pleased crucial posted the video. Lot of people reacted the way I wouldn't. They -- sanctimonious jerk who really go out there and be parading after the Gelman Rachel. And she doesn't set policy for the company and in any event people do have a right to have different opinions from yours Adam. I know you hate the people who disagree with you because you think they hate. The in the vernacular the video went viral. Then tried to take it down that led by that time it was too late. Had been picked up by others who went all over the place. He went back by the way the next day when backed to the chick fil. He said because he wanted this year fraiche it was all right. Not surprisingly Rachel didn't want to see him -- imagined this guy. Has his ranch and then he comes back to see you would you wanna -- you not. Who would you think this guy could be a nod and shades of Aurora. Appreciate you know what he was gonna -- quite frankly that I wouldn't want I don't wanna hear the apology. I don't want anything go away. And if you wanted to do. An apology. -- Russia under no. He later this was late last night. Posted a video where he says he was so are now the video runs seven and a half minutes I know I want to watch it after a minute mask. It cut out and I couldn't get it back so I don't know what he -- him blather on about for the next six and a half minutes. But he started with -- an apology it's interesting how people apologized. And back off when the world is turned against them. But by the way according to the blaze on an online and looked up the story somebody. From that organization. Interviewed him. He has lost his job this -- Smith has launched his job as the chief financial officer. And a company called Vontae I guess it is VAN TE. Now he's whining he wasn't given a chance to explain himself has nothing you can explain that and you don't do that. You don't do that to to understand. So the company fired him good for the accompanying I would -- also. Now it gets according to I now according to Smith we don't know. -- I think there's no way of verifying and he said Australia's been threatened with violence and death. At one point according to -- email account was getting three messages a minute mostly vulgar and threatening. His homer dress was made public show he can't live in his tell she's that in undisclosed. Location. They should been shut up by. Some somebody Christian and much and Salvador and anti Christian who had suggested everybody go to chick -- And just take the free water. Because there was there a way of protesting in the -- training resource is this somehow inspired Smith. When he saw this and so he went and and he did it of course she added in the verbal stuff which was not part of the original. -- original suggestion going to get them the -- water. Anyway. This is now. This is I guess this is where stands by the way the the there. The suggestion when they hit -- in the Christian posters should go to chick the last. They should quote proverbs. And the first from prior version as if your enemy is hungry given food -- if he is thirsty give him water to drink. This was supposed to justify why you're getting the free water Amylin reporting additional I don't know. According to small message human right this. -- during his marriage. Same sex marriage should be human right so therefore he got upset then now he's paying the price. Twittering you're really got bullied like this and others claimed that some new Nazi groups have done something. Who lounge. But it's interesting how. The story. Has. Expanded years ago nine. Versa I'm -- was it a little bit of a nod. And you know. A real jerk. There is sitting in his car I think he's gonna make a video and all of a sudden now. You believe the report his life is changed around. So. That's the next step of the chick -- story. I'm a nice guy by the way here you know if you have to tell people you're a nice guy and legend played down rorschach. Because I think you're asking -- why do you think you had to put that in. Why did you have to say that your -- nice guy by the way do you think that perhaps. Rachel might have thought you're not a nice start because of the way you based. Not usually a bad sign if you -- you can tell people you're nice guy. There was supposed to be a follow up I was a -- him. Demonstration which pretty much fizzled. But there were some cases where homosexuals went to various chick fillet race. Raising chicks for the way. And -- did a big kiss in front of the year restaurant to show. I'm not exactly sure what that shows spent okay. My exposure could be another one now where heterosexuals go and do cases in front chick -- The best of my knowledge no more raining but they all got served if they want to tell you. It also allows me go back to the story. Before and you notice what happened without him Smith polish and now he's contrite. Potion had done that when the world is John raged -- is consequences version actions. The same thing happened with Tom Menino mayor Boston. He's backed off his original statement which was that he wasn't going to let chick fillet in to Boston. -- who should worsen the affected pet they're have a tough time getting a license. Can he serves -- only backed off also. Because there was an outrage. But. The key thing is that unlike Adam Smith. Who was just obnoxious and stupid and not a nice guy. But he didn't commit a crime. -- you know he -- he can argue about harassment but it didn't go that far. He wasn't -- didn't threaten. And now I would say there's there's no crime here. Tom Menino did commit a crime because Tom Menino. Is a government official. There's a mayor of this city of Boston. And there is a requirement. -- by the First Amendment. That people who criticize the government shall not be punished by government he even threatened by government. No he can say okay he really didn't stop the license. Well it's like assault and battery. Assault is when you put somebody in in fear of being hit and batteries when you hit an assault is a crime to and that's what Tom Menino did. Tom Menino committed a crime -- Rahm Emanuel did too but this is a Boston station so focusing on that. Well include Rahm Emanuel and they may be other mayors who crossed a line and I haven't. Haven't looked at the verbiage. Shared by all the mayors who responded that way. He should be prosecuted and frankly should go to jail this is the only way you are going to curb. Excess abusive government power. Is -- government officials. Learned that there are. Hard consequences. To being a criminal. General kinds of crimes groups besides putting your hand in the cookie jar or being corrupt in the conventional sense. This is corruption in the constitutional sense. And the US attorney one Carmen Diaz and the attorney general Massachusetts. One Martha Coakley. -- to do their job and they ought to bring an indictment. Against Tom and you know -- to a million defend himself in court. That this is -- kind of abuse of governmental authority that should not be tolerated. Tom -- -- -- office for sixteen years she was contemplating. Running again has a big war chest. Now some people say they're so long they begin to think they're not just the mayor in a constitutional republic. There some kind of sovereign. Either a monarchy urine dictatorship. And it's time that action was taken and to inform them that the constitution. Still rules homeland. And individuals have a right to speak their mind even if the government official disagrees with -- your thoughts are welcome. 877469432. To his phone number I'm on the Nelson. -- -- -- Welcome back this is Don Nelson album lines today that is to say no gas. Show. You of the stars of the program 8774694322. Is the toll free number. 6868. Here's the text message code. And email address they Nelson had wrko.com. From 617 this. Text message -- you know do the same things she win win win proposed a resort casino on the waterfront. Get these and not tell you something. These mayors. These people you know overgrown mayors overweight politicians throwing their weight around. Russia -- throwing their overweight around. They're gonna keep doing it. Until until they understand. That it is against the law. Nash come from the judicial system. Let's start of the telephone lines -- your first up on the program thanks for being the icebreaker. First of all I've beaten you have to remember if you wanna get anything done and bust wouldn't you -- just the -- were first. Yellow electric Porsche problem is that it's not the way it's supposed to be. No that's not the way it's supposed debate. But unfortunately. You think that's. Story you -- rise and that's why -- a good healthy indictment. Might change some of the policy. My -- lead to a little bit less ring kissing yeah. You know it'd be nice if they've learned something from that. Stupidity of the -- This -- she won't unless there's an indictment. Yeah I agree with your. In the adolescent to be learned here is never put anything out on the Internet that can be evidence to be used against Gerald. I Schumer talking now about Adam Smith. Yes you know then you know he was proud of himself to put that out it's right. Anybody stupid stupid enough not to know what the backlash from space. You know he's fraud I guess the way many -- thought that everybody would just applaud him he be -- that's why put three. The video out there he first said there was the first time he ever posts are postage on the but that turned out to be a long he had posted other things -- But you're exactly right -- these flight you know and I think he didn't expect this kind of response. You know obvious that the -- had businesses is that you know you and I broke graphical world. All of values -- the next. A moral compass himself -- console on. And today there is no moral compass and if you stand up for moral compass there although the ridicule -- -- -- business just. It's just think they're upside down. Any idea about it you know you -- I know what you're saying then and there is a sense -- you know that America isn't a country used to be and yet take a look at what happened with Adam Smith. He put this thing nine and by the way they criticism that came toward him was not only from right he was also from the left. People who said that first of all it was not right to berate this Rachel. Poor gal who just you know doing her job that chick fillet analog and there were people also understood. That. The head of chick fil a has a right to his opinions. And -- that some people complain because -- corporation gives money to certain groups that they don't approval. Well corporations have a right to do that just like George Soros has a right. To do things contribute to organizations that I find obnoxious. Did the fact that Adam Smith has had. Such an outpouring of hostility against him that you and I are talking about that there we even heard of this guy and -- M Smith out of two shots. Is this statement that there are still people -- who valued these ideals who recognize. The importance of free speech. And that is part of the constitutional. Foundation of this republic so. It's small bleak. You know I think something like play -- talked about if not today and her future show. You know -- except for -- -- I think we're slashing and -- right before rehearsals and told him. You mentioned about the standard as a Hollywood have prior to 1968. Didn't truthfully you know I I knew they had standards. But I actually didn't know what the brick -- fine because when they started not to have standards. And it if you could -- -- talk about that researchers there if you don't have a lot of knowledge of that area but I'd be very interesting to know. You know what made them turn them and why did they turns. Mean I can just a change in subject brush and and one worth considering reported on. On the future agenda or Shaq the producers making notes even as we speak thanks for calling you. Let me just make a postscript remark is a big fan of old movies I like the old movies better than the newer movies fishermen out. Do -- no more real characters generals to put up with a vulgarity. He don't have this ridiculous special effects going in there. I think the turning point by the way -- Hollywood. Came with a McCarthy. Inquiries and investigations. In the late forties early fifties because that led to the black list and I know during World War II of Hollywood. Was very much in favor of the United States. The war movies some which they were propaganda which -- what to expect even need during World War II. And then there was no there was no hostility from Hollywood at all. And I think that fed carry even a little bit into the fifties but I think the psychological change when they saw some of their numbers. There were persecuted. Because of this now I must say also. That while it's on fashionable to say it. There was a lot that McCarthy and that. Inquiry uncovered mean there were a lot of people involved. In Hollywood and elsewhere who were sympathetic. To the Soviet Union. From in the Manhattan Project is really get to the moment. Before in fact when. Did you just to take it back to show we are deep -- -- the Manhattan Project. Was the World War II commitment by the United States to build the atomic bomb. Was -- two billion dollar project which in those days was probably more like around 25000000030. Billion. And when the bomb was tested. Truman -- -- done Truman was president. He was a meeting with Potsdam. He told Churchill. And who's -- own -- Stalin because this was a game changer politically people understood the power of the atomic bomb. Any mention it to Stalin and everybody was surprised that Stalin. Just seem to be non reactive to it. As if you know it didn't matter and we found out later the reason for that wish there were so many spies. In the Manhattan Project. That it already informed the Soviet Union not only about the project. But later gave them the technical details which is why just a few years later. The Soviet Union could explode an atomic bomb of its own pit stall was not impressed. That's how deep this. This Communist. Influence went in the United States. It was all during the depression a lot of the intellectuals so there was some truth to the allegations but. Verizon or any of these things they went overboard some people dark -- persecuted more than they should have I think that was the turning point for Hollywood. And then they never looked back I mean when the Vietnam era came -- he would decade later. They became hostile to the United States and most of them are still lost to -- handful. They're a handful of stars who are harder you know pro the United States or conservative Kelsey Grammer comes to mind. But most of them are on the other side and I think that that that's where it started. I do want to having mentioned the Manhattan Project and she rush gave me an opening. It's not exactly the right day but I won't be with you on August 6 this is the fourth pitch pretty close he was on August 6 1945. That the United States dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. That was followed three days later by the atomic bomb. And dropped on Nagasaki. And we have people like Jeremiah Wright who think that was just awful. But keep in mind that the reason this had to be done not only had the world had six years of war. And fifty million plus people killed. But the alternative. To getting the Japanese to surrender original land invasion of their violent. With the expectation that there would be a million American casualties alone. Let alone with the Japanese. Would suffer because there were fanatical and ready to fight to the death. So Truman who later -- there was not a hard decision to make and I can understand that you do anything you -- To stop the war to end the bloodshed to stop the carnage and save America launched. And for those who say by the way that all wasn't necessary they were gonna surrender anyway. There was a crew. Military coup. In Japan. That took over the emperor's palace the day before the emperor's recording was going to be broadcast to the nation. Urging the people to surrender. And they search for the recording because they were gonna destroy it they couldn't find it actually ended early because there was a power blackout. This was the first time the people of Japan had ever heard their emperor when he purged their surrender them to use to accept surrender. Now I've read that message the only military reference in there. The only specific reference to anything having to do with the conflict usually and Hirohito of the emperor says. New addition the enemy has come up with -- new and most cruel bomb. So it's a clear reference to the atomic bomb it did. Influence the decision and did shorten the war and -- Countless lives. So for those who. Here these this and was -- like maybe a little bit later on we'll play Jeremiah Wright. Who treats -- if we somehow -- -- because we were cavalier. About killing a lot of people pension every. Number of people killed in Hershey -- was less than number of people killed with the Tokyo. Bombing raids the fire bombed by a bombing raids that have preceded that. As if somehow if you do with a lot of plans that's okay they've endured one plane and warm bomb that's terrible. Anyway August 6 coming up day after all the anniversary 1945. And dropping the atomic bomb. Okay well we know we're short a little bit all over the place but. Maybe a nation interest staying or I guess some due to just nations scattered rain. They 774694322. He is and phone number. Text message code 68680. Email address and Nelson and wrko.com. Back to the telephone line to earning your next on the program good afternoon. They definitely happy that particular problem. Pleasure to have you edition. Now I'm not -- you're talking about typical way and Mayor Menino the I think this is a perfect example of a politician being admit to not feel great. Yes -- aren't. I do agree although I will tell you this Ernie I think that mean he knows mentality. -- probably get away from the get go. But you're right I mean there is a shame shame that he just he has hurl things around in just sit and think that it's up to him that this side. Who who comes to the city and who doesn't whose business lives and who's down who's is gonna die. Doesn't this man had even a big awareness of the constitution. I mean I know he sounds incoherent. And Daniel doesn't sound especially bright. And by the way I want you know we're behind new. Tom Menino -- back. How many know was involved with the Boston partly when I was employer which struck the back always come and I didn't have strong antipathy to he lost me not him in the final analysis when he started. Using city resources our tax dollars to support the occupiers. And that's you see the same kind of thing but on the other side he decides that it's okay to use. Taxpayer money. To provide trash collection and electricity for the occupiers but not the Tea Party -- don't wanna -- -- supposed to be doing. Right I mean he didn't repeated that could be taken sides. Yeah yeah I think the -- -- across the city over a million dollars on the right I think. I don't remember the number -- I'm sure was Chandra which you know it doesn't matter and the shores of principle goes Bulger was ten -- It.
