Sean Bielat on what it will take to beat a Kennedy

Joining us now -- be like your hammer him couple years ago -- ran against Barney Frank a poll came out show initiated a tight race. He became one of those candidates -- -- national money pouring in hoping. -- a major coup could be pulled off it wasn't pulled off but. Barry is leaving so and -- Imus are Barney is leaving -- and that happened. I think in part because of how tough things were against Johnson -- running yen. He's got a couple opponents in the Republican primary and over on the democratic side. Joseph Kennedy the fourteenth is running along with a couple other Democrats so it's going to be a fund -- Sean joins us now to break things down the mornings you -- -- -- nice to talk with -- how things go on. -- great better -- the -- it was. But I deferred gain momentum. We have more volunteers we have more name Eddie we're reaching out more towns and these are going to get it. What how does that process work explain to people who've never been near campaign because. But you know not even make -- campaign happen. Well a lot of one on one discussions that's that's where it all starts and that's what it's. Ultimately what's gonna help us win so you know except that town couple who you go around to talk to various town committees. The Republican town committee -- he's set up event then in various parts of the district -- Invite people -- from both parties from Independence -- and you get to know them spread spread the message recruit volunteers since. What he would volunteers that we can you do everything volunteers come in they make voter ID calls they they go out the door not to put up signs. And that one on one contact 32 that one on one contact is worth two hours of commercial successes and win this it's the rest. So you start off with energized Republicans were organized known to meetings and you get them on board and then you just kind of you sir that's small core and then you build an outward from there. -- -- -- the only excitement starts happening when people who love their own accord start given up their own time in their own. There own energy and money to. Because they want so badly to see it happen. Right and so in 2010. Early on my volunteers also you know the first campaign that was involved in Scott Brown's which has. Couple months before I'd pick up my campaign. Buddy and people are saying this is the first campaign have been involved in more than this one. And we're getting more people saying that this time. So what's happening is gradually is -- more and better and more competitive Republican candidates more people are coming out getting involved. Helping out and it's creating this larger movement that's gonna ultimately make this state more competitive from a party perspective. Assuming you get the Republican nomination and assuming Joseph Kennedy gets a Democrat which would seem impossible virtually for him to avoid having happened. That or how does it make you feel about the process that some kid who's got no -- just circulation for being a collector congressman other than the fact that he's. He's of age and he comes from a family with a big name how do you feel wanna get all that attention that he gets. Yes I'm an upfront admit my by some money get the guys so obviously I don't I don't like it. But it didn't stepping back from that as an American and looking at the process is just not how it should work this in the country in which we have. Hereditary leadership political leadership. This is in the country in which somebody should be able to -- seat from generation to generation. This is country in which we expect voters to get out and look at the two candidates look at their ideas and then make a choice accordingly. And what we're seeing is that a process that competitive process besides that it's based solely and a name. But that's what. That's what voters seem inclined to choose which is. Which is odd isn't it I mean the whole premise of this country -- whole revolutionary promise was based on the idea. Of not having a royal families and yet Americans seem eager are creating them. Read ironically that happened a lot that happened here in Massachusetts and I'm. You know I actually give voters more credit than that I'm going around the district talking to people Democrats independents Republicans alike. I'm here in his last night I was complain though it targeted 3040 people and in it in a restaurant are. And over and over -- heard the same thing another Kennedy's running I'm tired of that. You know people are people are waking up they want choices. And at the end of the day at the end of the election in November if people are looking -- and listening to his ideas and going that direction. I -- -- like it but that's how the process disposal -- -- supposed to work yup hopefully I can win them over hopefully they'll they'll listen to our message send and you know come art direction. But it should be were great about ideas not just identity have. So here you are you do and again you do it two years ago two years sounds like a reasonable amount of time though when you're actually following campaigns. It's stunning and how quickly your back where you were two years ago. And I must be doubly so or more for when you're the candidate are you in shock figure here again so quickly doesn't feel like you just finished. It does. -- might be the wrong word created a lot of fun to get to meet a lot of people yet to hear a lot of things. It is energized and that's enjoys it -- campaigns are a lot of fun now that being said. We now have two kids which we didn't have it became my last campaign where the six month -- and 21 month old. And that really at the new dimension can't spend time at home what then that night and didn't see them enough during the day and. And balance in the Stanley with a campaign that they had -- challenges. So the big issue obviously if I say what's the big issue we are gonna say it's the economy is there some message message inside of that. Term which is very generalized something more specific. That is gnawing at people as you go around the district and talk with people Sean -- is our guest he's running for congress again I would is that the fourth district. -- Yet the reconfigured four and a lot of people don't realize they're now on a different district and they were previously thought and effort on their new. Com but isn't it in answer your question needed jobs -- is the economy and it depends how it impacts people depends on where you are in the district that looks very different -- ripper. Then it does an Attleboro and it doesn't our post then it doesn't look like and the people at burying. The angles at which they're looking at economy. But in all cases it's that how we get growth and and -- -- to think that talk about the vs stimulant like giving people and businesses background money they're gonna make much better decisions about how to use certainly government can. But the second is making sure that we have an environment. That's predictable making sure that business owners who make up decisions about whether or not hire whether or not been that. Because they know it's coming and wait too often. I hear from business owners that that's not the case way to and I hear you nominal position right now where I could fire but I'm not doing it because I don't know what's coming and got -- help there's gonna look like. I don't know what exactly they're gonna look like I don't know what unemployment insurance can look like for me. And the result is I'm just not hiring and that is that mr. and that's something that we can sit sixth. Do you think that that people. Understand the president yesterday said in his speech that this is said to this national action is a clear one itself it's a branching off we either -- -- come to a fork in the road. Do you wanna go with the laughter do you wanna go with a right and I'm I'm curious if people the president's pitches basically. Let's keep spending money that we -- from the Chinese. To give people jobs that the marketplace is not driving. That the dollars into it. And Liz Warren said the same thing on national TV yesterday the way we fix the economy on the short term. Is borrow more money from the Chinese and give it to municipalities are gonna hire firefighters are they can build roads. And then she said the long term plan is tomorrow more money from the Chinese and hire more public employees. Does that have anything to do with -- -- in the economy in your mind. No absolutely and and and you see the -- of the Obama administration viewed the other day. When he says you know the private sector is doing sign it the government economy that's not. Government can't create jobs they can take taxpayer dollars and employ people that by creating jobs that's not sustainable. The government can help that the environment in which businesses can thrive and that will grow up -- and so we have an administration that's sit there and blame the last administration that after you know three and a half years in office is still talking about how it's George Bush's -- What this guy ran for the office he knew he was getting into. He took over and he needs to accept responsibility for what's going on any needs to take. You know -- steps to lead the lead is still an environment in which business can drive not just.
