-- we're joined now by Steve sire from the Boston Globe Steve are you -- today morning good morning hey I I was reading you guys are coming out with your Boston -- top 100 companies on Sunday bright. In the Sunday globe an online on Sunday. Project in long compilation of 100 top companies that the globe has been running for decades now. Now I know it's a secret but today you wanna tell our listeners who's number one. Just between document yet just they just I'm not just our guys haven't talked. Who's number one in the Boston Globe 100. Number one as are fascinating company Hebert called Momenta Pharmaceuticals. Which is just a fabulous story and doing really interesting things one of those you know Brady act ideas that came out of MIT that took -- a number of years to sort of get on track as a as a business and become financially. Successful that is is really doing great stopped now. All right so. I think is this a public company here's a privately held style. Note these are all public companies on the on the globe 100 list and moment to certainly. Is included there. So what's your criteria Leahy is it employee satisfaction is its stock performances it product development. How it how do you guys pick. The the companies in the top 100. Well to visit a secret sauce that goes to this and there's -- wanna answer but he has a lot to do with. If you know the conventional metrics of business growth about how -- sales are growing. Your earnings margins and also stock price to some degree. But you that you put all these things together we hire. -- Peta hope crunch the numbers for us and it produces this -- at the -- and you know. The list is this something that is I think really representative. We hear the economy is in Massachusetts -- back a couple of years dimension we've been doing the global under the decades. For the first time ever. We couldn't -- A hundred companies to qualify for the list that be beyond just rankings and you there there -- minimum requirements that go into the calculation. And you know we were we were down into the eighties. And in 2000. And nine and last year week -- 2010 rather than last year we come out. And we get closer into the ninety's but we still don't have that hundred. This year we're back to Britain and back more than 100 companies qualified to believe the number was 114 or something like that but. It is true issue how the collective strength businesses across Massachusetts are pulling out of the recession slowly but surely. Is part of the reason you've had trouble is because it requires that they be public companies Steve. Well that's certainly part of I think brutal looked at. It. The problem was is that the single biggest problem but again there it is these different metrics that you have to meet but. One of them is that you have to be profitable for the previous two consecutive years and you know you can go up and down Bolivia and NC a large number of companies that didn't qualify for. Either of the past two year's -- 100 and that includes the number one company Momenta Pharmaceuticals. Hey let's talk about numbers two and three on the list that I -- people tonics right what is this a medical device. It it's a laser company that is that -- their products or their industrial -- is that going to all kinds of things whether that's becoming a component at a medical device product war. An industrial product that's you know. Cutting materials and if it gets. Put into all kinds of different. Industrial. Purposes and it's a fascinating company. And today because the people out there they. They went not disturb bridge originally -- over time and and sort of because -- there was a technology infrastructure out there and they kind of wandered off into Oxford of all places -- I was talking to somebody from the company very respected how I don't know any other company Oxford strategy get out there that was. Is sort of been the historians describes. What about all true holdings it would is that is that like hedge -- -- what do they do. -- holdings is an interesting company it's local but if it is in tactic collection of very assorted nut and -- companies that. You know that the that he did do things like. Make routers that going and gun -- in in in humvees and go and -- in side -- is that are used in industrial vehicles that there's all this kind of you know. Britain Greece a real life products that they make but it's it's -- sort of portfolio of them that's an interesting. Kind of company in in property collect. Manufacturing companies that -- are not necessarily sexy but things that the world needs. Interesting intra team that I see Sapient and Parametric technology that gives I was looking through the historical ones they on the -- site this morning as looking like. Akamai was one time they were number one in the in the hundred Lester and that event a full bevy of winners and losers on that on that list. Any any big gap falls from grace. -- that you can share with us. I am not a witness is certainly it it's it's almost impossible to stay. You don't write up on top of the year is -- just too much competition that you know circumstances change and has always. Somebody who has you know a gang buster product of some kind but that that that. Surges ahead. I can't think of anybody just sort of fell off the in the face of the earth you know. When I look back. Certainly the last 45 years companies that have been near the top there's certainly still all in the game. And Parametric technology to -- here in -- -- to see that there there on the list. They're number five on the list behind Sapient and in all traveled so. It stay with -- thanks very much for your time -- reflect and that that's in Sunday's will be -- Sunday globe and available on Boston Globe dot com as well. Very good will we look forward to it I'll pick it up on Sunday thanks a lot but I. That's Steve -- from the Boston -- joining us today on the financial exchange.
