Major Garrett dishes on Obama, Romney and all this political

If we can't we we left off with you last week we were talking about Wisconsin being made -- visa. The battleground that might be the early indicator for Obama Romney. We know have we now have the candidates and they are weakened to about dose of about four weeks left as I understand maybe it's only sorry I can't remember but. You know we get closer and closer to ground zero and all the rest of that stuff what is the news from Wisconsin. Well with the -- still very tight and everyone throwing everything in and you have to look at the governor and say. He's got he's got money he's got the resources. That we have the message. And can Democrats you know by rapidly. Mobilized. Across the entire state and figure out away to a the governor is now -- disqualified because of what he did on public union pension and. Make -- let me just remind people this is the governor who last year Scott Walker. Cause all that opera because of the pull back on union collective bargaining rights so he's got a recall election coming up in a few weeks in the primary is just two weeks ago so the Democrat just got chosen. And at that point Scott Walker had what twenty million in the bank in the Democrat had 800000. Right right. Scott Walker's the incumbent Tom -- former as former challenger -- what he lost them in 2000 and this is the rematch OK he was not the chosen that -- is that the Democrats. I'm very it was not the chosen candidate of the public employee unions most. Grievously upset by Scott Walker's attempted oracle forms this point of view. But their candidate lost compared one Democrats have to pull together rapidly and it almost instantaneously. That shouldn't be difficult there's agreed to do -- deal of democratic harmony against Governor Walker and Governor Walker had to make the case that he's -- the right thing on the reforms from his perspective a public service unions and public employee unions and that he's a good governor what the lines of attack from Democrats is not just about. This well known debate in the state of Wisconsin about collective bargaining rights and public employee unions but that this state has lost jobs. Under governor -- walkers will watch and that. Even if you're satisfied. With what he did of public employee union -- should be dissatisfied because this state is not doing well economic. A major it appears is a little bit of backlash I don't know if this -- accurate are those one on Drudge yesterday. Well I think he had a nine point lead in it. And but but they're just seem to be a little backlash over the idea of having a recall election when they just elected Scott Walker two years ago. Yet that has been. I was talking several Republican strategists about this race two or three weeks ago and this. As a threat that they thought they would -- introduced into this race to get -- or 5%. Of the remaining undecided in Wisconsin. They look. We just elected this guy he didn't do anything wrong there's no criminal charges is not a hint of scandal or even a witness Campbell. This -- this recall elections cost in the state tremendous amount of money. What is the purpose. And if it is only a political grievance -- Those in the Democratic Party wait for the natural order of things and have the election when it was originally scheduled. Yeah what -- solid errors heaviest so heretical -- from now not -- exactly. And they did they believed through their own focus group analysis that that was the message. That could resonate and poll those remaining aura of good portion -- winning portion of the undecided. Over to their side and that's in the line of argument you've seen from governor Walker's -- I'm very it was chosen as the democratic -- what are we doing. Who who's wasting money in this state who has focused on the future whose focus on grievances and that sort of be the Governor Walker rejoinder and I'd vote I think the polling you're gonna bounce around but I know that that is the central inside the walker supporters had that this was the way. To be back. Governor I mean some Barrett and prevail. Our major we have to move briskly tickets we have for -- Scott Brown's campaign manager coming up in a couple minutes. It can you charge us a little bit about the polling -- there is the New York Times CBS poll up and the USA today -- a dodge showing really surprising numbers and strength for the Mitt Romney campaign. Yes and I saw on MSNBC yesterday that the -- deputy campaign manager for president Obama's saying the methodology -- -- CBS New York Times poll was all wrong. My experience in politics is whatever side is arguing about methodology. They don't have much to say about the underlying data that is what this would argue about the match. But it for them haven't complained about their their hometown newspapers hole. It seems -- and look. If you're the Obama campaign. That's a hard polled a look at because there's some good news and the president's approval rating was up it was a fifty and his approval on the economy is up by two percentage points that's good news. But Romney was ahead of Obama with women and that is terrifying news for the Obama campaign if that in fact. It's either true or even trajectory really true that Romney's closing the gap with. Obama on women voters because. That would have happened. In that time -- the last five or six weeks when there has been this tremendous public debate about whether Republicans ever have not a war on women. And that's not put a net positive place for run going to be and he's still gaining with women he may not be ahead -- -- he's gaining that's bad news for the Obama -- But if these polls are correct and judging from the -- objections from the the president's campaign they feel that they are. Dan what is driving the move away from the president after he's been. Effectively launching these weekly scams the war on women and the the bin Laden thing he's been patrolling the news cycle the way he wants is I don't. The bigger than it is what does this -- statistics in that are two numbers that New York Times successful I think cannot be held in dispute one. 62%. That the most important issue in the presidential campaign -- economy jobs the next issue. With an 11%. The federal deficit so broadly viewed. Financial economic destiny of this nation is the number one or number two issue for 73%. Of registered voters that means. Nothing else matters -- -- company if it's not about the economy and job it is not going to. So this is an economic claw back into the election saying look you guys may wanna talk about other things what we care about is the economy and that's we're making our judgment by and the economy is bad. Exactly when I travel around the country and I and I sort of can catch while Washington talks about America and all these issues the way -- average American does. Someone who actually has a real life as opposed to my only life obsessing about politics. I see how that filters down to them -- like wait a minute that you understand I have this issue -- public mortgage. Job. Disposable income college savings whatever it is -- house -- house values these things are central to -- all the other stuff. Ignore these. I have to live and short of destiny from myself my family in the economy as a consequence -- two days. And I'm not -- anything else about how the economy today is going to change tomorrow that's the that's seems to me when I travel around the baseline. Issue for most voters and most Americans I I've fundamentally believe. That the essence of this election will come down to interpretation of the economic presence in the near term economic future.
