The former governor of New Mexico in the current like candidate a libertarian candidate for president. Joins us now he's also going to be here in Boston I think tomorrow at an exceedingly he would be in Worcester tomorrow at the Al Worcester Tea Party event. Our Gary takes -- come on. And I had no I I do I I do know you're I'll probably try your tri athlete to climb mountains right by -- of you lot of a door stuff are you playing I'm going to the Worcester Tea Party event and then just running a hockey in a jumping in the marathon cause I know you like to run and. You know I have done about the merits and it really is a fabulous and and that would be Monday it would it. Yeah yeah -- -- in -- I saw that on the -- that I thought well maybe Gary Johnson's gonna on the merit sponsor a bit you know bandit run army year. And I know they changed the requirements of the gift to run multiple marathons now again into -- I forget. But I -- -- you run. I think I think I've already qualified for Boston and I've only run at one time so lap when when I ran a lastly. 2000 true and as the -- -- iron one ever entry third. All the while now yeah. Now -- I know on. Not I do you know dot and a more serious note you are running for president of the United States and you were governed Mexico for quite awhile. -- and you were further popular there I know you vetoed a good Jillian bills bills as as as governor you -- a relatively high. Popular approval rating when you left. You or your review you left the State's budget was in pretty good shape. There's an open senate -- New Mexico Jeff Bingaman is leaving. Be and why not just curious why did you run for that seat and add sort of another -- a small another a small and -- Voice to the small but loud libertarian small government course in the stat in the senate. Instead of running for president. You know I I have for her react could not I could not be in the congress so I think the bottom line in the job is still about filling up to the trop. How much bacon in neighboring -- Think that that's why we're in the in the predicament that were in the politicians that can't say -- and are printing money to do. To the detriment of all. Now I know another former governor there was an office of about the same time you were. A lot Angus King in Maine he's he's running for the open senate seat. In -- and and in -- So I I was always wondering. That did you ever consider it all or were you always just off -- -- had dries in the White House. Well I don't know. Maybe object here is the Mets. Really in the messages that we are in -- terrible shape and if we don't work and I'm -- though that collapsed government so. That's the message and it's about spreading that message. I think. Would love if we're on all -- Republican nominee I don't think he's going to be either Republican nominee what happens that it message. Fiscal conservancy. And not social tolerance one -- all its other. Now in Iran in 2008 another former Republican pick yourself former Georgia congressman Bob -- he ran for president under the libertarian banner. -- tough times turn the party nomination. In Denver picky I think much of its 56 ballots before you. Got the nomination you are much more of this it's been predicted that you'll have much easier time securing the nomination. At the at the convention Las Vegas the first week in May. You differ from him and how you feel better than him in the general election -- she didn't do so while in the general election. Well her personal life Obama nominee come first region made that. I'm. Arguably I got to be the libertarian governor in Mexico for eight years. Under the guise of being -- Republican. I debated are. In 2000. The national Republican. Convention in Philadelphia -- well. Need being -- form drug laws -- legalize marijuana. Bob Barr being much different maps and wasn't just that topic but you know what it. Yeah it was different when it came to a lot of different topic I mean from civil liberties standpoint it was restrictive of civil liberties. I'm glad it is I think he's a whole lot of bad at some point it is became a libertarian I'm glad that perhaps its own under. I I understand that he did a really good job of articulating what it was to be -- libertarian out on the campaign trail but. You know what he was always carrying that big old car or stop that he had done in his past that warm very libertarian. I don't know about him that you well arguably have -- order in my entire life. Now that Ed Clark remains the only gotten libertarian presidential candidate to crack 1% of national action you've talked about. You've got you hold fairly high and some states I think it was in Florida you -- and nine. But do you think you can crack that you think you cracked the of the of the of the disease that the number that libertarians have other cracks -- 1980. And. And held them. But I -- the -- an -- here is actually win the election. Out of that happened. Well polling at 15%. Being in the national debate against Obama -- them believing it going to be Romney that. If that happens. If I am the nominee and -- on the national debate it would be two guys. I'm just viewed -- -- -- is possible. Given that 80% of Americans are now are saying it would consider voting for a third party candidate. Appalling at 7% right now against Obama and Romney's. I don't know that a significant and I'm calling that -- as much as I am the third name but I am a third -- yeah. And I just I have to point out but I do think this it -- -- -- -- I'm -- let -- level. If the libertarian candidate for president it's 5% in the general election vote. Other Libertarian Party will receive nine million dollars in federal matching funds. For the next cycle which would be that -- game changer. I'd be the first one to signed legislation banning federal matching -- But it has it been games by two old parties and the big game that gets played that allows them to collect. Hundreds of millions of dollars under the same scenario. The LP does hit 5%. For the public financing in the twenty -- election what do you think they would do with the money the with the -- the LP take the money. Into the or -- they return what would the Kazaa -- but the LP a real difficult spot. Well actually the money would be controlled by the 2006 team candidate for president. If I were that that will make that happen this cycle which again I'm hoping to be the nominee. Potentially that might happen if forward -- -- I would wanna be that nominee again in 2006 team controlling that ninety million dollars. Believing it to be an absolute. Game. So you would you would use the public the public financing. If you. Is that it is it is shut I mean it's something that we look at are on our income tax return we choose you. We choose to make those donations but a little bit different. So it is some of the areas where you're saying. Yeah and -- And the bit about has been doing it games and make no make no interpret impatient about it. You know there's a there's a perpetuation of the two party system in the country and and if it libertarian have a chance to crack into that libertarians have a chance to become. One of the major or that might in. Another there's a perennial debate within the libertarian circles about what the role of the -- Libertarian Party should be. Do you see him more as the an electoral force to put people in office some more as an educational force that can spread the ideas of libertarians on the free markets of free minds. Well I think first and -- -- I mean it's always been information always. You know here it is what four months ago Gallup comes out coal and -- -- percent of Americans now support legalizing marijuana. What series that wilder in Florida people are talking about it. And and they're talking about it more today than they've ever talked about it before. Now when you look back over the forty year history of the Libertarian Party. Arguably is more responsibilities. Or the drug issue and bring awareness the drug issue other than the Libertarian Party. -- the party's always been a party ideals but the -- giant party also always been about fielding candidates of these various. For various elected offices and not let alone win it and I and I do recognize there are ample have. But. Look libertarian party's always I think been about true I think Libertarian Party -- percent. People that are fiscally conservative and socially tolerant I all in the category. And when people hear what it is libertarians have to say I think most people I don't know I would libertarians. And so I think there's a real potential here. To elect libertarian. And the editor worst case. Libertarian it was true with regard to all these issues eight the country become a better place because we've become more informed. Now you mention Ron Paul are there. Ron Paul you endorsement 2008 he EE gobbled up nearly all of this. The small G government libertarian oxygen in the 2012 GO primary but he can still barely cracked fifteen to 20% most states. How are you different from Ron Paul. Well first -- all. He's a messenger armament -- I think it's the biggest growing segment of American politics today libertarian. And that the more people hear the message the better resonates so Ron Paul doesn't have tea. And doesn't have a Bogart. On communication. When it comes libertarian ideals that police argue. But the more you hear it from different sources I think the better -- and look I was hoping to provide stereo speakers around all Republican debate. I was excluded that in a way that I think was really unfair. How do you get into the debate secure not in the polls. That determine who gets in the debate that's a real catch 22 minutes. Way that the system is manipulated. In a way where nobody even noticed. So they only wanted one boy up there on stage. Well. When Ron Paul's candidacy goes away believing that he's not going to be either public nominee -- this passage though. I am I hope I hope to carry that message coordinated. Isn't it. I think you've got to be doing the same thing here at the chants. I huge shock to his support duds for his -- comes from his position on the Federal Reserve are your thoughts about the -- similar to him as. Well what we need when it comes to Federer is their policy is transparency. I would abolish the Federal Reserve if given an opportunity but keep in mind that congress passing -- station and abolish the first year. What does abolishing the Federal Reserve Aurilia accomplish. Well what are really account forces and that is it brings about transparency. What we need to stop doing in this country is printing money. We can. If if the current or were abolished. We would still be printing money -- it would print money just like -- printed money before we had at Central Bank just like other countries. That don't have a Central Bank print money. So the key -- to slash spending and not have cue up borrow and print money to. Children of 43 cents out of every dollar that we. Now you warrior you you talked of how would you be. For Paul though -- that that the Federal Reserve things such huge issue a drive so much of the support for him. In 2008 you know Bob Barr really hoped to to ride the Paul wave. He even hired the same well web developers and basically copy the same website that. But. Drew Paul vote fractured in many different ways in 2080 dating -- to. To to barge didn't you put it didn't go to just to to what a lot of went to the hard right it without the constitution party -- -- -- -- How do you how do you attract up his his supporters. Well our first of all I think that the base there Ron -- support our people -- -- Hearts and minds now without telling them out telling them. Are asking them any and we're due -- go. Put out there I don't think there's a choice. And I think when you go back to 2008. I think Obama was literally of them most of the second coming of them. And Bob Barr -- from my standpoint. Pretty you know I'm glad you delivered in that. I am I just. Personally -- I don't know. So serving if you will or trying to take advantage of the situation room where. Yeah I never viewed the libertarians ever it was it was kind of always being anti libertarian -- -- anti civil liberties not under civil liberties so. I actually really apples and oranges -- -- Bob Barr's. Trying to trying to claim a libertarian mantle and that was something I never ever -- Now. You you said in an interview the reason in February you talked about hi you've really made and in the drug war wanna hear the cornerstones of your Ron. You've also talked about how that doesn't really raise money but in how it's hard to get people want libertarians. Fired up about shrinking government either. His era is our third cornerstone for you is foreign policy -- the civil liberties and in full disclosure I wrote I and the -- a correspondent for reason. But it is Sarah. You know I I had put that out there I -- for reason magazine. Are you is that it is is there a third course -- whose car start if you seen as sort of the the drug war and fighting the drug war has worked out in the smaller government things really are difficult thing to articulate of people just not sexy I think was the way -- I think that's how you describe it he says she is not sex. Larry we'll flip it and let me point eight created it and there are way I think they're actually there's three cornerstones. Are running president of the United States. One is identifying the problems well -- OK so everybody can identify the problems secondly. You got to identify the solutions that go along with the problems. I think if you're tacking about eight presidential race and Obama and Romney and meet. I think and the only ones going to be talking about the solutions for the problems that we have. -- and then lastly. You've got -- have a ransom. To go along with OK so you identify the problem okay so what. So you identify the solution that goal of the problems okay so what you have a resonated actually did you. That you could actually go waterworld will go out and doggedly pursue. What is you talking about well I think all reinstate. That's the case trying to make in order. Well we'll see how it goes. I. If I were on the debate is -- so Obama and Romney. It would be an accurate statement today. You have more executive government executive experience and the two of them. Combined. And given my background in business switches. I grew a bit Boston and New Mexico from a water first handyman Mickey. To employ over of people which players. There's a real experience I think it goes along with and that experience. Rarely equates to. My having served as governor of New Mexico better government good government in New Mexico when I served as governor was easy. It was easy to look at issues -- And politics last if even a consideration at all meaning. Throw politics out the window. Look at the issues try to make the best decisions possible for citizens of the state. Not. Decisions based on politics. Who you may or may not upset or meg happy with your action. Now you've. You've brought the debates a couple times and go for a lot of third party candidates it's always a big deal to get into the presidential debates. It's it's controlled by this I think it's the Commission on Presidential Debates there's only three that are held us and -- on unlike the Begin how many debates we have 25 Republican presidential does something like that ridiculous number of it. I perceived elected I think to be great there are more than just three but. Going to do the three debates in the past. A third party candidates like I can't call exactly if LP -- has by no presidential -- I can't it's the past. Have sued. The suit to get access to the dates they've been arrested and a Michael -- -- was an 04 I think he -- sure he was arrested outside one of the debates protesting not be allowed and but that would you have sued Saturday thinking of their private organ that is technically a private organization are they freedom include an X whoever they want. They've it in that context they've. The criteria is 13% in the polls to be in the national debate. Pearl established that so I think you the last. Third party candidate to appear yeah 92. In the national debate so. It's been established and that was as a result of -- so 15%. You could expose argued it that they would exclude. My name. Again I am hoping to beat it they could exclude my name all but sure you know what. It's hard to it's hard to. To try and sweet 15% under the rug and pretend it doesn't exist. And if sit there and it'll be there and it'll be measured. Now I know you only have a little of the time left but I want ASCII what some foreign policy questions some some libertarians have criticized you for your. For your comments inform policy in the did car this week. So you say you would support using US forces to intervene and you've gone to and pursue Joseph -- The leader of the Lord's Resistance Army he's if you're not and it's there for listeners are not familiar. He was a guy that your your fourteen year old kid was telling you watching video but it was thirty minutes long it was kind of hard to understand. You also say you support keeping American military presence in the Middle East even though he said America doesn't face really facing threats anymore. Do you think this is gonna hurt you with with with a with a lot of libertarians because you leaving the door opened for. For -- for for an intervention. Around the world and that's something a lot of libertarians have real real problem -- Well in relation to have a real problem with it. I'm making or you know what in my case. Are making three promises running for pro it's one is that promised to submit a balanced budget to congress in the year 2013. I promised to veto any idea legislate. More than XP revenue -- products advocate on the part of throwing out the entire federal tax system and replacing the bare facts. But in the context. Military spending. I'm gonna produce a document out outlining a 43% reduction in military spending. What -- 43% reduction in military spending like well that's nuclear warheads from 2300 to 500. That our military footprint on on the planets. That all of the conflicts that we're currently involved and that's the military. In uniform that's. Millions support staff that goes along with some actual research and development and intelligence. So Internet contacts. Answering questions daily caller. And that we should have a presence intimately yeah I think we should have a presence in the middle the other there's 40% reduced presence. Worldwide but where where are the potential military threats. Do they do they not -- and by the way. Clearly hope the daily caller article registered the fact that I do not view there being any military threat anymore on the planet. Currently but that we should be vigilant to those military stretched so. I don't think I don't think we're gonna elect anyone that isn't going -- say that they're going to be vigilant. Two up potential military there. And I'm the only one. Only one. Talking about a 43% reduction in military spending believing that the biggest stretch our national security is the fact that we're. Borrowing and printing money into the to a forty cents out of every dollar hours. He said you wired to maintain bases in Afghanistan though and any but you use it you wanna keep I keep a presence and leases are particular are there certain places the Middle East you'd like to leave in certain places you'd like to stay. Well I I am all what I what I really wanted to make clear and that in net daily caller interview was that -- Look only -- regarding all this stuff. Are we gonna go from the presence that we currently have and Afghanistan. Just having no presence at all and by that I. I don't mean an occupying force I don't mean. Troops on the ground in Afghanistan but it based. And potentially yeah -- And it is. This in this statement that I made I think to make. A statement contrary. I don't you're putting yourself and a box that maybe you can't get. What about just of coney says he he's one of the worst terrorists in the last twenty years did you do you really think you really think he's worth spending US. Resources on. Well my understanding of just a colony is and this group. My understanding is it's fine big group of about 300. They have arguably. The worse. Terrorist organization on the planet for the last twenty years having. Killed maimed. Raped murdered ten of thousands of people. Over the last. Over the last twenty years. So if I would have signed that legislation that. That President Obama -- on I have been set to go in and deal with that immediately I would have dealt with it with so volunteer forces. As as I am looking at it doesn't. Were. Outside of just military advisor but. Like it in my understanding that the worst terrorist group there have been on the planet or the last couple of decades. One last question this is a little pertains to the local senate race in Massachusetts. Scott Brown is the incumbent he was elected in twenty tennis special election and he's going up against Elizabeth Warren. She's a prominent consumer advocates she's and rail against Wall Street firm and the financial industry for a variety of reasons and for quite awhile now. Do you have a particular did there doesn't appear it doesn't appear likely based on the in for the foot I've come across that they'll be a third another name on the ballot. I think eight or nine people -- papers but it doesn't appear that any of them are particularly close to making the deadline. Who would you back in the race if it just comes down to Scott Brown vs Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts. All I I'm I'm not here I would not be here exports are making that decision. I'll I'll -- I'll keep in -- as much as possible at some point maybe get have to have -- you view that. And I to Gary Johnson the former new governor of New Mexico he's also a Libertarian Party presidential candidate. He will be appearing with the -- to Tea Party tomorrow in Lincoln square.
