Garrett Quinn is joined by the executive director of the Restaurant and Business Alliance of Massachusetts to discuss the Night Owl T service. Many businesses along the commuter rails are upset that this service will be cut. Many college students utilize the T late night because it is dificult and expensive to get a cab in Boston. Do you think this T service should be saved?

Joining us to -- -- now is Vincent Eric K he's the executive director of the restaurant and business association. Many thanks for coming and now that is -- read your -- -- on things. So here you -- a big fan obviously of the return of return of the -- now yeah we. So it's it's kind of funny when we were talking with some people last year they. -- mainly restaurant owners in Boston started talking about. You know everything you know -- shuts down at midnight our. Restaurants are open to -- you know to. And so we started chat about it we started looking into it we've reached out to. State representative John gar believes he's the he's the chairman of the MBTA caucus app the Statehouse. Started talking with his office and some numbers. And you know we started to realize that. You know that the stopped in 05. The last numbers they really -- was 2003. In the cities just a different place he got a lot more college students. You've got in higher. You know an entire seaport district that's now built out. And you've got a much larger. You've got a much larger convention space a lot of the conventions have now been just. Built out and it's a different city. And so we hope to continue to attract a lot of new convention business. Whatever is gonna happen with the casinos. We're really gonna have forgot about that and I forgot about that the -- to the casino possibility if you -- the night owl outed by. I could see the casinos maybe throw money humans as if and when -- area though is their willingness amongst the restaurant owners and and private corporate private ownership right now and get back why did you vote this weather because it was partial didn't get some private. Money I forget -- I think mark the other side and I'm not necessarily sure but I mean the fact is. Restaurants have been hit with a perfect storm of conditions to hurt them. You know last year we had probably the worst winter on record we were very lucky this year you have higher energy costs -- understating this and and the best to have -- Fact that what you angle -- the scheme you know. -- But yep -- hired. You have hired healthcare cost yeah cost fuel costs. All of these things are contributing to really hurting the restaurant industry in the fact is. You really shouldn't. Need to look to them to throw in money to do something that the city really should be doing already because he got to remember something. If you have let's say. Let's say they they implement this and everyone can stay out an extra two hours let's say. Let's say 101000 people on a Friday night a lot of money stay out right let's let's assume they only spend an additional twenty dollars that's. Now 141000 dollars a night for just meals tax alone in a 7%. Over a year just Friday and Saturday that's one point five million that's going to the state. The -- really don't need to put anything up front because they've got the infrastructure there we have the infrastructure let's maximize it let's let people -- -- -- -- the city to run by the state. Me and him still operated it would have to be it would have to be I mean the fact is the cities and towns don't really have too much era and a -- But the benefits there it's just a matter of making the initial. You know it in August and what about the pride what about the private sector possibly -- that's what -- what if somebody would have that he did put -- let's say like hey. He is if it's he put this on as a contract and let somebody brought this in the manner similar to waited at the the commuter rails not to. Put out today and maybe run their own. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- to test out socks is impossible. That now the one idea that we -- dad go to bed -- -- and -- thought the one idea we looked at that apparently is having a good amount of success in New York. Is advertising on the actual T tickets and and and again the reason for that is you know where it is it's locally -- targeted and whatnot. You know that's something that that definitely could be implemented I mean really -- but I mean you know the question is do you really wanna look to. You know maybe he could possibly look to some of the colleges because they're non profits. And a lot of a lot of their students of the ones that are going to be using this unique and possibly look at the colleges to kick in something. But I mean the businesses right now I mean you know you -- and -- the worst economy in and long time we're lucky to have the number of businesses active. And growing that we do you have in in Greater Boston I don't wanna put an additional burden on -- that I wanna make sure that they can maximize their ability. To service the public and you know continue to pay taxes and you know the more people that go out the more tax revenue yet an -- it through the -- tax yet. Do you how how realistic do you think so the likenesses does happen what -- and I DV this could actually come to fruition because I know. The keys in real dire straits we were just saw with the but that if the flights over the over the to the he funding the hikes and everything I. I don't think you can afford not to do it I mean the fact is I was very happy to see the manner. I think it was David -- article yesterday in The Herald talking about how the manner. You know once wants to look into getting this done on with with whatever casinos are coming and I can tell you right now. No one wants cars ingesting. All of their roads are now they want. To have an option for public transportation plus let's remember. People need to get to and from work in when they're working at various jobs that are not Monday through Friday nine to five. They're gonna need some go to and from work at various times of the day. Which means extending the -- is really going to be you know much more important. So this should be seven that would run Friday Saturday Saunders right. It would be pretty difficult to run this -- right one of the things that are justified to undo right one of the things that we were looking towards. We again we put something out in December just following ideas and one of the ideas was you know let's do -- when it's needed Friday and Saturday. You know class forget Sunday well in point let's let's face it you know Monday he. As much as you'd like to have it Monday on Monday through Thursday or Sunday through Thursday to -- it's not that he had the real need is is maximizing the opportunities that we have. Sudden someone from Yahoo! who runs a duck boat business and you know he he deals with convention authority -- on the QB great idea -- -- from the duck -- since that run. The -- I think they he has a role Matt Lawrence I asked them a five -- duck boats -- -- -- -- -- -- they could take short cuts through the river massive a lot of good save a lot of time. Think about that. You guys haven't done much voting hop hop -- Nobody saw you you you you were talking to somebody in and you know he said he has a lot of cut he has tendency to have a lot of conversations with various. You know various convention -- thirty people and he says you know one of the biggest problems is. With Boston selling bosnians the -- closes at midnight. And you know that's seaport district is beautiful as some excellent restaurants down there the convention center obviously -- down there as well. Ian down you know if you really wanna maximize it you really wanna sell Boston and you really wanna increase the amount of business where -- From conventions because you know now we have the capacity to to hold them. You gotta do these types of things and and it's not something on Paper up front you gonna be able to to justify the overtime it's definitely makes cents. 6172666868. We're talking about the possible revival. -- -- -- service on the MBTA I think this is a really and stream. Possibility I know the mayor is behind this. That he sort of said yeah we'd love to Butler broke but I think there's a lot of pushed as as he's indicated since any indicating. From is from the restaurant and business -- particularly you know bars and nightclubs. Are we do have to go to break Charlie but let's get to Ross in Boston rust before -- go to break what's up -- Good afternoon guys thank first of all you probably should have the duck boat people run the tea and then maybe you run them in the black -- -- -- Yet you know -- congress Charlie seriously guys which ought to do is that contract with politically and services. And you can have a bid to write a special returning home. -- special returning home. Yes. The military had an out until 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning and -- -- not Obama people have a good time you know. I -- it's not it's not the government's responsibility to provide them transportation -- own. Sure all right Russ whoever gets a break here will base or call 6172666860. Or get back to -- text in your calls when we return. We're talking about the possible return of night owl service in Boston. I'm Jericho and 617 and 2661666. And 726660. And sixty. Excuse me you Austin, Texas it's X 8680. They -- brought some Vincent Price in my career do you care McCleon. Now as you know that as long as you know coming any expletive people -- you people call you -- as -- the exact executive director of any. Now I I I get I get instant I get everything I just CA executive director of any sounds -- -- the same as the Vincent. On 6172666868. -- is having trouble speaking because Friday and company from cupcake city in -- And I actually don't -- which one year enjoying. All the ones like gum drop on the top red velvet cupcakes hockey city in -- yeah it. And -- also make sure to bring in Dunkin' Donuts obviously. But do you keep it iced coffee really weird. -- I -- I drink everything argument coffee black my coffee by a -- my coffee black in my eyes coffee black I just never liked. Cream and sugar. In. Aaron were I think just got to for my father my father always drank his coffee black I just dislike. But what doesn't Thelma white drinks but -- drinks might white streaks are hot coffee black and that she drinks iced coffee with like. Ridiculous amount of loneliness is sugar went after its -- one iced coffee become cool. When you put the ice and no it became cooler gone at it became cool on March 23 1996. In line is that wise that is that's the first time I had a nice you know was sold Iverson. It was my birthday that -- remember. I ever and don't they don't is really needed but I don't made it being bit thank. -- never understood the the appeal of -- know -- -- -- Americans and stuff Duncan don't. Can stand Dunkin' Donuts made a lot of things you know one of my most favorite like business stories from Dunkin' Donuts. That day they started selling bagels became the day they became the largest -- bagels health care in the country. Makes an end so yeah it's it's just -- leaders what what cookie did you have it's. Was at the lemon at some karma -- All of the harmful sea salts yeah and it's only actually -- on top cupcake city from cupcake city reading it's -- -- -- so. It's great I told these guys I always bring. Guests I always when I'm guessing like all right some broader world where all our ethics are all gone now I just get you guys eating cupcakes he can't talks like can plug -- place and I'm in time. A six saw -- Six on 76666. They were talking about the possible return of the night -- service. In Boston and and on the -- -- you are familiar the night owl service was a program service that was introduced by the key back in the early to found the first half of the two thousands are the thoughts. I guess that's the term -- roots the roots. The roots. Which. Brand bosses after 1245. Along T routes that were closed eyes for example you would take -- line you would take Abbas. From. We -- Abbas from saying. Braintree and you could. It would run parallel to all the stops on the Red Line Euro late -- -- -- when you're out party in and Messina some them place their Messina plaza are whatever. -- them Messina spoke out for injury and then you take that you take Abbas and you could take that bus all the way to L life. And it was a fairly the most implausible even. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Six on 72666860. Also Texas at six a 68. 339. Texts and it's doubles on my and that's exchange offer. Master itself once. Give me the money and I always -- instead of the state they are already waste enough tax Payer money don't do up and he favors. At the amendment onto us. Any favors he or she 33 but yeah I think a lot of people are gonna thinkers say is it that you're saying. Outfits and Eric Elliott the executive director of the Massachusetts restaurant business association says it. -- a light -- -- why are we. When how why and how should estate foot the bill for this one at all really only benefits. Private businesses and as it at a time that it at at at a time. When the tears and having money anyhow how a lot of people thinkers say satellite that well mr. devil's advocate. I don't know how you can say it only benefits businesses that this is are all paying taxes. And you know you're allowing a rest right to operate until 2 AM but you're not necessarily helping the maximize. Their ability to you know to maximize those hours I -- waiters waitresses bartenders. They're all worked until 2 AM yeah and you know -- living and dying off of those tips. And to see all their customers leave at midnight or you know whenever there that their client base task of running grab the team. And then by the way does the same people who need to take Petit home. Sure go to C waiters waitresses and bartenders not have the ability to get home from war. It's you know. It's you know you do you have to look at this in the big picture of the other thing they're gonna come from. They're again they're all all of these businesses paying taxes. So let's say. Let's say let's take a few years we'll take quite a while for that to kick in in for these and I think do they not take taxes out immediately and he and he doesn't need any additional revenue boost that's going to come from these places -- doing business volume after hours their initial. Amount of capital is not to get this item off the ground is gonna -- for the why why couldn't this be done by the private sector like while I don't understand why somebody and this is to say the restaurants can do why why. There's clearly demand for this type service if anybody who's been out of bars. At 1 o'clock 2 o'clock morning knows it's really hard to get a cab after that -- the -- susteren I I. You again why why are you looking to business or the restaurant I mean yeah I'm not -- I'm looking for -- video and say a white owner we have seen an entrepreneur or I'm that it did that she isn't such dire straits and I I love this idea my concerns is that I don't think -- -- I don't think that he is it's it's it's it's plausible given the current state -- if government runs the T that's like you have to look to the government to do this -- at all. Second. You have a city like Boston with a huge number of students. Because of the number of colleges we have we have we have great colleges like Suffolk University which ten years ago to not have. Still undefeated football team right you have ten you you have a college -- at the university where ten years ago. The majority of the student population -- commuters like me now and now they have all of these storms. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- late night -- service like they did when I was in college because I use law. My my main concern is is I just don't see. Anybody in the it's especially just given what just one what happened. I just -- unless the business community can really ratchet up there there are and as we haven't felt like. They yeah it sucks that washed clothes are but. I just I. We'll see if all business guys some of them not to let your right ankle million bucks I think while. I can run my old boss do you wonder if he does the question I am I generally you know bring out you know is this going to be a race to the bottom or is -- going to be a race to the top. We have a convention center and all of the investment in natural that we can't invest in the infrastructure to get people to win from the convention center. We have colleges that we give tax breaks to by the way rightly so I I I see a need for night do you understand the value of colleges bringing in students. And bringing in commerce but we're giving them property tax breaks. You know. That's that's gonna be considered as well and I'm not trying to make this day prosperous them type -- argument but there is a need for when you look at other. You know when you look at other cities that have large infrastructure large number of universities. They invest in. There transit system and I mean it's not like I'm asking you to build a freak in monorail asking you to. Hours -- in this truck here that already exists that. I know I I I -- respect what you're saying I and -- start in the congress. I mean I was very happy that the restaurant business alliance decided to. You know put this out in December you know again we did work with state representative. John -- -- who's the chairman of the MBTA caucus at the Statehouse. On you know five things that really could could help make this as revenue neutral as possible. And again the infrastructures there were only ask an -- four hours it's not like we're asking -- the monorail. Relief was so wait you -- do that and so run longer than one to 230. We think in I'm very happy that you read the press release I sent you and -- -- to the others and basically what we're what we're saying is okay. Starting at 10 o'clock instead of running it every eight to twelve minutes on the lines let's go every fifteen minutes. And then you know at 11 o'clock let's add one dollar to the price of all yea I remember this armaments and sorry that's but that's that's a very very very common sense approach. And then you know again we suggested doing it trial period for one month yeah -- to get real data because again. You can't build a structure for the data from 2005 wouldn't hold up anyway them deceased changed a lot and -- that that -- time you have the build out of the seaport district. Now you have a large number of students in the city of a larger number of build outs and in the south and and South Boston now you have what is potentially going to be a casino in the Greater Boston area but the casino to casino tactically -- could really change. The fabric of this in the it in whatever way I know -- popular posted the wrong people like you. And this -- would be able moral that the the casinos coming in there or bring revenue and they're gonna -- I knew a new revenue source for the city if it happens he's Boston. If all ice when shift you hear it from a restaurant arm are worried about that about the -- coming in -- my excited about that. You got to be concerned I mean you know in the end. You know competition is what it is however. You know you got to be concerned and you know we we tried to put in a couple of provisions. To help restaurants. In the in the casino bill that was passed it was initially put in and then pulled out now. But you know it's it's it's it's like anything everything affects business the hell do you think the casinos could be a big help in. -- -- -- -- with with a but it's the return of the -- service I'm guessing well I mean again you know what. They would be a big player that right the gap be president of the restaurant business lines and I did meet with the mayor of Revere and we we discussed this and we basically said. You know you don't want all of your roads to be congested. And one of the things that really can help. Would be if discussions. Started about getting that down as it's the Red Line correct -- the to -- the that goes into Revere the blue -- blue line I'm sorry. You know getting that to be extended. Service and you know in theory I I think it would be probably most helpful to eventually be 24 hours but obviously. You know we wanna be realistic and and and you know initially just get it extended because. You know again you want to minimize as much traffic as possible. And the best way to do that is going to be public transportation now. Mitigation funds go through the city's not through the states so again that's a separate argument for separate time. But you know we we we met with the mayor -- and we wanted to make sure that we you know disgusted as an idea it is to start bringing up because what ever does happen again. There's no crystal ball you don't know what's gonna happen but whatever does happen. You know you wanna make sure that these discussions there are at least held so that you can look to possibilities. -- You know every human you never used to when you -- -- non may yet you ever -- you never -- now sir I never use an announcement is not an -- I can tell you as a guy that used it. Me I thought it was the best thing because you're a college year is just not call your your college. You know money and I don't mean like no money like all broken mean like our communities don't have access your trust fund I -- that night yelling. -- I -- yet nobody I mean like a huge huge view broke that's really the existing that he can't spend money in a cab. Right despite the money at night -- was -- -- -- I mean that's that's really the question the question is you know three bucks to get back to your dorm. Or nine bucks to go the first ten feet in account if you confined to cab you know he really the other big problem that you bring up there's just no cap bill. But the same time to the -- now. I can't aren't cheap you start with just aren't like to restart at two dollars right now -- -- I I if it starts Tucson that got a -- Drunk biking actually are you endorsing -- like he's like don't like the end up a why does not have a -- more drinks this law -- a I look I I I think there's a real. Isn't -- or help the president I think there's a real of Nvidia -- I think a really strong case for the return this thing. My only concern is that how realistic some in the -- actually happen to -- climate. All of that he's probably a review what do you -- I I'll walk I'd be interest I'd love to know what the -- -- -- accountability. Garrett do you guys think about to -- five think of Garrett I haven't registered to Eric I have one question -- -- called the board know the other superheroes the fast five other big guys they -- is the kicker they they're they're they're fantastic and I -- because the fast I was your short game for the wars now that we're gonna have a -- can we at least go to Star Wars it was -- don't want anyone to vote but -- I was -- with the question I have for you is how -- -- the state invest in some winter and how many jobs was that. There was a lot of money. And hundreds -- yes I -- and and it was and federal products are I'm sorry not the leader of the Green I mean the pre yet get local one yeah. 64 million -- and how many jobs what was. You mean here yeah Massachusetts Massachusetts I don't think -- yet and and and -- that company now. China and you're talking about not being able this and to invest another million years in. Transit system that supports potentially 600000 people when picking winners and losers man's fault yeah. Gonna say. You know what though I mean the fact. The -- back to the fact remains if they could find 161000004. For that you know Green energy product and in -- Massachusetts. That didn't even last a year or about the neighbors. Reloaded in people in north and complaining about just drunks in -- -- -- anywhere you want to be out later. The actually I'm glad you brought that up the restaurant business alliances scheduling any feedback forum in the north and four. April 20 -- okay beat us haven't and we're gonna discuss those things including. Potentially getting a an extra. An extra -- at the end of Hanover area price -- going up and somebody just text. Sony some customers from six obscenities at texting and or five bucks a person after eleven well is that I think we initially well I think we initially or like the drink I think we initially proposed. Three dollars for a trial month of possibly made like -- or just we'll just. Just yet just to get a sense of what the -- is and and then you know potentially work off of real numbers. He got to remember they you know it is there are times when the team does runway you know they run it late for. I believe fourth of July they run late for New Year's terror free on those as well. They they also -- on and you know again if it's free you can't really keep track of the number. But but they they do run late. You know it it is done it's something that can be done already because -- it's just a matter of proper planning getting some real numbers. And then you know and then figuring out doing the math and and yet you're absolutely right as long as it's less than a cab ride. You gonna have support from from the people wanna use gentlemen we you have to take a break. When we come back we will be. The -- return of anonymous comment theater. Experience always return to offer such an obscure amount of time depending on what happens the Red Sox is only. Many US stick around this are you familiar with what we're gonna do now yes -- I -- to make fools of -- so we -- close as we got one comment about the -- in our that the -- in our and are lined -- and are -- not stupid comments on -- -- -- -- -- You're let's see -- Quinn on Jericho and that's my idea and he's hitting it into any air vents and Eric caddie did Obama on the glass. Six on 72666068. Will be right back.
