Our our next guest here and I as I said earlier this is -- does this have a big day for her I mean it's number one on the New York Times best -- Spezza. It's not too shabby nods this wonderful scraped you've been you've been you've been there before though. Right yes but you know what I mean I never take anything for granted. That's you know you should always celebrate good news or not and never have some -- expectation that kid's gonna get repeated 'cause it might not. Right and audio so they'll say about the super ball right that's right toward goal America's you never know if you're ever going back again. -- says Patricia Cornwell what she is the world's number one best selling not a crime writer. And she's got a she got her new novel -- eighteenth novel in the doctor -- struck at a series she she's -- she's a corner correct. Well -- I Auxilium lot of people think -- but I actually I worked in a medical Examiner's office for six years and of and I spent so much time in the field with the real people who do -- they. They forget that I'm just an English major but Kris -- is okay is I was Little -- you know she's the genuine article for sure that you you can start out enrichment right. I. You know. Research in the medical Examiner's office there in believe it or not 1984. And I got my first tour of a medical Examiner's office or morgue. And I started hearing about DNA and lasers and other technologies that were coming down the road that there were. You know I knew this you know what this is really interest in this is what I wanna learn this where wanna date. And so -- house our pentagon born. So you you -- I mean -- just knew you wanted to be a mystery writer which one -- have your your -- your if you wanted to have a different twist on your. Your hero or pure heroin. What really happened is I started out as a journalist and so you know and I got the police beat this -- are you a media is general Columbus. Yes well -- makes -- here is that in order for the Winston-Salem journal -- -- works for the Charlotte Observer. All you worked for all you worked for a -- married to Knight Ridder yet retired exactly. And in that they've now McClatchy. Yes and they threw me into the police -- and that was my introduction to the world of crime but what was so useful about it. He's my approach -- it was a nonfiction approach. Because I was journalist and then my first book was a biography his source said one day you know I wanna write more books don't wanna write about crime. And so the trick is -- really never approach it like murder mysteries were -- more conventional. Whodunit type stuff. I've always had to go out dancing with the real people do and then prayed really exciting stories based on fact. And so here than your new book is is up port mortuary and that's the one that's number one now just came out couple weeks ago right -- in this country Jackson just came out I'm not even a week ago but is it came out the UK's. About a month ago. Congratulations. You but you're you're here you wanna be here for another couple or reasons here you've got Leo you've got the -- -- to a lot of work without veterans you if you try to raise money for some for veterans here. I am -- you know what when I was doing their research report mortuary I became. You know got to -- a lot of of military people. And in addition to two hearing of course the types of things that are killing our troops in conflict. He's awful IDs and all those that do this is what -- the port mortuary Dover deals with. But I also hear about the people who come home who survived but they have. Other types of injuries emotional. And physical and we have a real problem in this country with our growing homeless rate among our veterans and unemployment. It's it says suggested it is believed that on any given night the United States or the 100000 veterans a don't have who don't have a roof over their heads sword or trying to raise. Awareness by taking collections of toiletries and things in my book signings and tomorrow night. Were auctioning off my Ferrari enough. The proceeds are my Ferrari personal Ferrari yes and the base its its not just about the proceeds go -- veterans village of San Diego. But it's really about saying hello everybody pay attention to this. Because we have a real need in this country we need to help our -- where's the auction gonna make it's it -- in New England Ferrari of new England and Norwood just down the road oh yeah. All the auto mod is gonna yet finesse it sent a national. You know international auction you can do it online or over the phone -- in person tomorrow night at seven at the Ferrari dealership. And the thing is fun this is a collector's card there's only there's fewer than 600 ever made is called super America as a glass top convertible so it's pretty cool. And very fast. C'mon -- I'm quiet a what's so what's the starting starting -- I don't think they have a real starting bid but the its appraised at a quarter million dollars so we'll see. So -- them. And it it's so we'll see what elements you have it -- had about a year I've had a number of ferraris but this one. When it came on the market I wanted to because it's hard to find a super America and it's also is a sort of a gun powder -- it's it's called Silverstone it's really beautiful. And just loved that car but but I'm happy to can be used are good cause and may -- you know has been a bit another one someday we will say. Of the Boston right I do I'm your neighbor the. You know -- ED you don't really need to be some wage is gonna do it for the heck of missing drive the bloody thing because it's so much fun when it's. V twelve engine and it's a B twelve yep it's about 540. Horsepower. Okay to be achieved faster but what's the mileage per gallon I know I know I know you should ask that question if you have that I had no earthly idea what -- But then I think it moves when it. You know even with -- engine rumbling you can see it burning up to -- but yet you don't get you don't drive a Ferrari -- -- worried about gas mileage so. 18774694322. Up Patricia Cornwell this year Russia be with a still lea top of the hour and a lot of we you've got a lot of fans on here we -- worry worry. My audience or reach a lot of thrillers and and mystery books -- I know that they the people wanna talk to you had it. And though -- yellow book signing coming up at the at the -- and I -- that that's right on Saturday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. So -- lot of fun I hope people come and you'd be doing a Q&A two fervor yes I should not let people ask me whatever they want and we M we we we sort of bring down the house we have quite a good time. You're willow willow -- that's a that's a good bookstore and it's it's right on not a great road that's to weigh in men in -- and it's got it -- on your room so that will be I'm sure will be a big crowd. 1877469432218774694322. If you wanna talk to what Patricia Cornwell this is your chance and again you can get in on the -- what's the what's the web address of people wanna learn more about the the was the America. Well -- well if we you know I'm sorry I'm so easy way to do it is if you if -- Google on or America. Forum for Betts yeah which is my campaign but you can also Google veterans village of San Diego. Which is you the model organization who's getting the proceeds from the Ferrari and where the toiletries are going and they've actually created a way to to help. Our vets reenter society and family life in the workplace and they're doing a magnificent job and so. What the hope is that we'll have more of these places don't just depend on the federal government to do this let's all us citizens who we can do to help our vets. So -- and just so just Google. What Chile that they village of San Diego that's and that's where we can find out when I got has already posted -- -- -- -- to easy way to do it okay and that and the other bidding starts tomorrow night at 7 o'clock -- on the auto mileage does Ferrari of Norwood. 1877469432218774694322. Before you sort how much research you actually do before you -- before you sit down to write the book I. I do a lot of research when I can mean for example I'm just starting the next book in the minute I'd finish port mortuary I immediately went into researcher with ran around and you know went to couple military bases for certain reason I went to a penitentiary 'cause I needed some research there. -- whatever it is I go out and do it and then about this time of the year. I released once my book tour is over you know I really buckle down and get into the writing but I continue to do research the whole time I'm writing -- a deal with so much technology. And medicine and experts and an -- haven't go to labs and -- more or ever to get my questions answered. Then it -- what's. And all year old your colleagues at the Charlotte Observer. You know I don't know I know I know I have. Innovative. Agreed on a few of them but they're working as spokesman for duke power -- love tea journalists usually change it has and it's unbelievable. -- it's not recognizable compared the old days now I know people of people who worry like me knew who were able to that I schoolwork for newspaper but you're you're able to branch out -- mean we're the lucky -- discuss. People got caught flat footed they just. And that up on the unemployment line it's on its terrible. Well I think -- age you whoever you are what are you. The world justice spinning so fast that if you don't change and adapt to keep up with the technologies in particular. -- matter how good you are something you can go hey I'm not Kansas anymore what happened there. 18774694322. Let's make some calls for a Patricia Cornwell her her new book port mortuary. Is number one on the New York Times -- what -- -- essentially means is it'll be number one what a week from Sunday Pakistani if you look at in the paper this Sunday you go where is it but it actually is always it would -- a week's delay. Right yeah yeah and in the up but this you got the word today so yes and we get them at the list right here if illustrate there. So you you were. You know your head of John Grisham in James Patterson and Stephen King. Yeah and and -- stick Larson who's the big best seller -- -- what don't even though who valley is but you're Harris can follow up you're you're had a so -- Sedaris. -- -- your -- -- your had a some big big names here NASCAR ped a she's pretty formidable one lady gets involved they get out of the way. Conventional oil and have. Vince -- Quebec's favorite is errors -- rush he's that he's done a number fifteen so your -- everybody. Right before Christmas stoke golf I'm as a -- graphics and finds a good day. 18774694322. CME your next with Howie Carr and Patricia Cornwell go ahead. Yes hi Patricia I want your FaceBook spam hello can -- and the question I wanted to ask actual working on your books. Do you wait until early -- -- the complete before you send it in her proof reading and editing and that kind of thing or isn't that the piece of that your work. That's a good question no I cannot send bits and pieces it's it's some. Did get very secretive about my manuscripts and I don't turn them over and -- I'm completely done an effect but it's almost a final draft by the tomorrow let anybody see it. And I think it's -- -- letting somebody keep pulling a cake out of humble guess what it's not can be very good if you keep doing that just let it let -- be. Your your editors don't I mean they don't care I mean they just wanna get a manuscript right they just wanna get the -- manuscript I don't they don't really have any criticisms of you. Now they they -- -- it the other -- -- -- but if they fat or my process that I wrote almost in a cereal is -- realization form -- one descendant chapter at a time they'd be fine with that but I could never do that. It's just not me. 1877469432. Tortoise that's where a lot of mister right the old days when you know when you were publishing -- you know and and in the Saturday evening post are so it's a very true effect a lot of people don't know for example Harriet Beecher -- what she wrote to uncle Tom's cabin it was a serial bus station she at a a chapter published at a time. Which is mind boggling to me because my. -- H I'm always going back and changing everything I couldn't do that. Who would you read when you were kid. Well I can't read really weird things -- read like I read every book on archeology I could find. But like mystery writer I didn't read any mr. year old I still don't not even Carolyn -- I'd never I'd never read a murder mystery Intel has decided I wanted to write them because I really wanted to write stories about crime. So that I started going around buying stuff trying to figure out how you do dad because I didn't know. As probably one the reasons why my work is rather than usual because. I'm not really a student of the traditional mystery novel on really more than nonfiction writer. Jog your next with how we guard Patricia Cornwell go ahead John. Very true assure. I am a -- former marine and army infantry. Sold sure I expect -- six years in the military every try it now. And all I wanna do is say thank you very very much or you're going to have very experts we all appreciate it very much thank you. You -- -- -- come down a Ferrari tomorrow night John and and law and and standout crank up the Ferrari. Have your own party -- thing well just a sense of etc. etc. I don't know what is open to the public but let's say that dealerships a candy stores fund used to go when they're no matter what. Follows great cars everywhere but thank -- John. Thanks John Marjorie you're next with how we card Patricia Cornwell -- bestselling author her new book is up pour more worried should be appearing at -- books in Akron. At 2 o'clock on Saturday in on Saturday afternoon. Go ahead Marjorie. I tell you my good. I Nancy Drew probably is one of her -- I know she's she jury ever later in -- embarrassing I didn't I certainly know -- Nancy Drew is yes really busy reading. Oddball little things in and running around playing baseball climbing trees and don't stuff when I was kid. Maybe issue remains to do now you think you would help our. Well and it didn't know Hollywood doesn't look -- your clock. So I that they think -- -- you know what else I love did you ride a light of the box -- children are asked to write I had the original collection all of that I love that. But this woman is very intelligent and he knows he's been there yeah. No I I government -- hey I'm I'm -- -- all but I'm so interested in the bidding on the Ferrari and its -- guilt and of course -- the woman up and just sitting tolerated project handbag anywhere you know -- That's right but -- it's going to be fun I have no idea what's gonna happen let's keep our fingers crossed it goes for a decent prices the of the veterans get some money and and though the card gets its due. How did you buy used or no. Yet disk it well is free owned as they say. You know most of it while it -- -- you couldn't buy a super America -- could say only made him in 2005 it's collect scar. They made fewer than 600 worldwide so. It's it's that one year that they made this glass top convertible so. -- -- some Margaret you should come to take a peek tomorrow night appear in the neighborhood. So -- again a mask in the amassed in the kind of questions you'd ask of a condi dealership but how many miles does -- have on its own and -- -- 5000 yourself. Switch -- bad for five year old car now but that's actually something you could find some Ferrari's people almost never drive and so don't. Which I think is these past due but if you have a car to go out and you should have -- it. It's -- you know it's and it's a work of art that it's a monster it wants to -- to read then it's happy when it's driven it's not happy when he's sitting around. There but it's you have to get through like wrote a recent things like that you know where people are driving a 79 -- -- and they don't give a bleep. I -- your Ferrari. Well you know that the biggest English state keep away from crowded parking lots -- before swinging their doors open and the -- -- in Ferrari and is a felony can do that. That's also a four digit code -- that's about right is true you're right. Let's Eric you're next with how we card Patricia Cornwell go ahead. Fair I -- I don't want. The treasury is still lesser -- helicopters. I am I still I I have mine at some. -- that's supposed to fly a couple days of the weather's okay so I have a -- for a seven. And out so yes that's that's another and you know I hate to admit it but I really do like machines. I don't I -- Sutherland -- -- I forget which book it was when -- on the back over what he. Like Jeff Blatter for alleged adopt a -- Troy and of course could probably write off because used to direct the book. I thought well I didn't actually use it to get a round -- I've been flying helicopters -- license have been doing -- for. I guess spent eleven years now -- had a a number of different ones it's it's it's something that also keeps me sharp because you kind of have to pay attention to what you're doing. Thanks for the call are 1877469432218774694322. If you wanna talk to Patricia. Cornwell. She's the best selling author of the the Kate -- These New York Times best selling author Carrie she's the best selling author of the case court case -- have a series eighteen books and -- strong march raising eighteenth. Valentine I wish I wish I had to -- -- well as whether she's the best selling author. The BK struck at a series. And -- you know the latest with tonight is the thirtieth anniversary. Of drowned when this murder in New York City outside the Dakota hotel. And up. Most of us here in Boston who lived in Boston at the time we were watching a patriots game on Monday Night Football and got the news from Howard Cosell. But you -- -- -- work and the the the second shift at the Charlotte Observer. I was I was work in the police beat that not I'll never forget it and of course you back remember back in those days when the wires would come off that. That -- that continuous paper that a rat a tat -- attended and then then you get a big story I was an I don't remember what time it was but I I was on the you know I worked at midnight and they've they started the news from sort of caught on fire with this news. And I was a police reporter and I thought you know it's probably impossible but -- OC -- find out some about this I started making all these calls to the NYPD and believe it or not I've managed to get one of the cops on the phone. Who had driven his body driven him to the emergency room and talked to him for a few minutes to find out and you know what his observations have been -- he talked about that basically he pulled out his identification and asked him. Are you John Lennon and by that time John -- -- always recently -- -- was was groaning so it's really sad that I was so absolutely hearted. By -- as was everybody else. It's one of those moments if you were alive I mean you remember where you were when you heard the news like -- and everybody around here was watching a football game and -- know I don't know about the elsewhere but that's good that they put on the front page I assume right. -- -- they did then my and the editors said I'm I'm shocked that you actually made those phone calls they weren't for just a cub reporter but why not. The Charlotte Observer was a good paper -- -- paperbacks it's almost clippers in North Carolina Laura bower payroll. Pails ghosts of what they once were. It's it's -- in the stay Anderson changed so much know when I was -- journalist you couldn't just recycle things by won't look like Google and the Internet like people do today. Entered to check you sources lecture was accurate he didn't print things just because somebody says so you. You know you wanted to make sure and unfortunately those standards are dramatically changed and I so I certainly know that because I get reported on and it's like where the heck did you get that that's what the. 1877469432. That dealership is what I mean it is a candy store it so much fun to go in there because you just see these magnificent automobiles. And they got a great store in their two. Love this stuff. Love it studio for a mug as the stock -- I have several of them are drinking coffee really fast. My son even diapers at the time -- -- problems that respect -- I think he's not looking at maples Cirque urinary. It is a. It is where you know when you hang out with the real people who do this work you'd learn all kinds of bizarre things. You know smells different colors are worse things that they observe in the morgue. Where they go you know this doesn't smell right just doesn't look right and it might be an indication of cyanide poisoning or. Or some disease process that causes something strange for people so you just pick it up when you by the through osmosis in many ways just. That from meet the important thing is to get around the real people who do the work and just to absorb as much as you can't.
