Car with a drop -- That's -- as somebody in the studio that coaches wanting. -- is in the studio live from miles last night's debate I think he may have could get. Nonstop campaign today -- she wants to know you're available to baptize his site. Absolutely it's.

A whole new attitude actually quite a list of things coach expects to have this but I just can't upload your lottery and do his vows and having your 30 this did not. You know what's funny. It's just so funny to see -- C eight you said to me you know that I do you think that I -- them but I may not be the most unbiased observer of the -- seat. Watches every. Handle it in the end and he said -- Do you really there all right so I think you pass some threshold. Good good enough congratulations on the -- here's Harry Harry grades here is an auto correct there's no great inflation hawks. 'cause I can't actually the question general manager arrangement every ten minutes okay. That's true but you know cook sees -- he never -- our -- higher than a C minus. So I'm kind -- Craig T talents operating net narrow -- I had tuna so but why what was your feeling about the debate last night.

Look I I was. First I was pleased to have the chance to engage in the discussion I look forward to doing it between now and election I believe there's a clear choice in the selection between. My opponents and make. After four years of not getting the budget under control and then not controlling state spending and raising taxes and and leaving a big deficit budget deficit for whoever comes next and then not give our economy fixed of people think things are going well they can vote for those guys but. They think we should go on a different direction and get serious about clean up our fiscal and tax and regulatory -- Then they should vote for me and and I think we did a pretty good job make you MS is less I -- tea. The governor -- it is basically didn't take responsibility for the last four years for the tax increases and spending and all the rest is basic messages. Look. Com Thanksgiving you are worse well I don't think that's acceptable. Adequate he seems to think that the the Big Dig is responsible for a for all of his problems but that's what Koizumi I think I think jump. When you're in charge you gotta take. Ownership and leadership for the situation you inherit the circumstances you have been -- need to minister that and and he -- take responsibility for. For much of what's happened over the course of past four years but that's in fact would voters wanna talk about in the wanna know what you're gonna do over the next four years to come. I put some pretty serious proposals on the table by -- which is a way to -- works. And and then come January we're gonna pursue those.

Jolly one of the predictable attacks that's been made on -- has to it involves health care the run up and health care costs you obviously anticipated that last night. They treasure the BM kind of writing being the Steward at how to build -- when premiums went up 150% over ten yes. The general public can make is they know that health care costs are crazy. And they don't really know -- hold responsible but insurance companies always with a black cat. How do you respond when you wrote there on the campaign trail a thoughtful voter raises this question. Kind of walk us through the -- would make the thought process.

Well first thing to point out to him as Harvard pilgrim was basically dysfunctional and bankrupt or got there which is -- state government is today and we managed to fix that we also. Cut back a tremendous amount of programming we cut our administrative budget by 25%. Over the course of two years we've reduced our personnel our personnel by almost 50%. We we made some really difficult decisions that they were the decisions that need to be made to write the company. And then we basically cleaned it up and got it to the point where as the number one ranked health player in the country for member satisfaction for five years in a row. And by the way you know our membership. Grew from a low in 2002 up to by the time my left arm in 2009 by 45%. So our you know our products where oil price -- very happy with our service. I think the big issue though ultimately with health care is it all happens within the context -- a framework that's established by state government. And a lot of the decisions detriment surgeons made over the course of the past four years have absolutely made the cost of health insurance and health care more expensive. And that's when I talked to people about so much is that things I would do. To drive down the run rate and in health care spending and together health care spending under control. And and he can't do that -- unless you unless you have the of the capacity of participated the state.

Levels -- there's a new book that's coming out the talks about the thousand dollars genome -- personalized medicine and a way that would never anticipated. When you aren't the only person learned over of that -- low cost just a -- when you talk about pushing back on health care costs are driving them down and changing the trajectory. I -- talking no it doesn't that go read it right up -- of what the Genzyme the bio Janzen MIT and how that and everybody else is -- Armenia. Findings new ways to provide better medicine for all of us.

There's no question that whenever things increases the cost of health care is the system's ability to do more things more people who you know we can't do anything for that doesn't really cost very much. But I think that the other thing to keep in mind here thomas' there's so little transparency in the price of performance and health care. So little so you have situations with the same service at the same outcome from for the same person can very terms of what it cost by. 34500%. Just five what possible without -- knowing where these years ago and I can't think of any other industry where you have that kind of variation in price for basically the same product. And I think one of the things is gonna happen going forward and you and I've talked about this before. Is we have got to get way more transparent and I'm about disclosing price and performance are pretty much everything because otherwise. The public's sort of fundamental right to know about what's going on is is being violated in addition to that that's where huge part of the answer us.

Do you feel a difference in what's going on politically right now in terms of -- how voters are feeling because if you look at polls. What it's showing is that somehow the armed. The disdained her for Democrats and their failure of leadership over the past few years. Is spinning wildly out of control all the sudden the numbers seem to be exploding and all the prognosticators. Are are saying -- second to forty house seats -- might be sixty house seats the Republicans went do you have a sense of that kind of energy going on.

We've are still the Marlboro limited parade I think every major candidate do is the only one it was a beautiful day and it's a big parade there -- tons of people on this parade route from all over central mass and and it was literally like a rock concert from one end to the other for -- I mean just an incredibly. Positive outpouring of support cheers on every corner will open and tolerant the whole thing that's courage and it was pretty clear to me my wife was with me of both of us talked about our stories and said well there's there's a lot of energy out here for. Making big changes on Beacon -- come January her come on November.

You know it's interesting Charlie talked about changes on Beacon Hill let's -- to suggested this to taught earlier in the show. That I actually think he'll probably find a strong. A degree of receptivity of -- through some of the things if not almost all of the things you've talked about. Legislature -- think in your experience with bill weld impulse which Paul -- likes to be a part of the solution. Com and likes to make sure that the footing if you will for the for state government is is pretty solid pretty steady it has not been. You go we don't we go back and forth system who's responsible for what but. Go.

And sets the tone -- of the -- I agree the governor's -- sets the -- and I don't believe this administration over the past four years has aggressively manage the budget the budget is basically manage them they've reacted to most of what's happened they haven't actually proactively tried to manage it. And -- is have a hundred different reasons for why this is that didn't get done. But at the end of today the governor sets the tone and in that context I believe -- get done and we will be pursuing. Come January if we win in November a very aggressive agenda for change a very I agree I think there will be receptivity to that because. Most people know that the state cannot continue to spend more than it takes and every year in deficit spend in you know ad infinitum I mean. We're talking about a 600 million dollar deficit in the year we're in right now which isn't even two months old. And at two and a half billion dollar deficit next year and this is after years and years of rainy day fund money federal stimulus money. And tax increases this this is not a show they can keep going this way so.

Is it some you know leadership I think requires that whatever position you're in. You reacts with open eyes to whatever is going on at the particular moment and I think this is Deval Patrick trailers governor. He came in wanting to be the guy with the magic -- who went and saved people or. You know by dropping huge chunks of money on the and then. PS and -- and in the economy shifts and suddenly. What we need is a governor who's cost cutter who's fiscally prudent who's willing to make the tough decisions -- we find out he'd seem willingly doesn't have their --

Well you remember in the first -- spending went up by about 20% and Patrick administration started spending the rainy day fund before it even started to ring I mean. I can't overemphasize. What a problem that is because once you start spending your savings account to cover your basic operations. You don't have it there when you needed one time -- bad and you increase. Your rate of spending beyond where you can afford to pay come adjusting revenue how much of the rainy day fund is now seven list for the 700 million dollars before the economy crashed. 700 million and their about the I think there's -- they'll be about five or 600 million left and others but two and a half billion. Among the veteran and.

That in that is about as basic as it gets and finance when you're when you're dipping into the savings account. --

Under ten governor's the governors of those ten years ten years. Doesn't billion dollars -- the governors are pretty clever when he describes the Big Dig has a project -- style to the rest of the state for infrastructure. It plays I think challenge to a political sense of how did that. IG wheat wherever we we could be at the -- we could be in the purchased we could be anywhere we are always getting screwed because of Boston centric projects. Do you feel as if he is plain cute clever political game that.

He plays a lot of cute and clever political games mum. To the bottom line is. -- people wanna talk about every day -- a -- earning him -- Is the last four years jobs taxes and spending the last four and really right now does well -- should talk about it and what it is people have planned for the future. And about oil and my I think the governor would rather talk about almost anything them the last four years but that is in fact would have on voters minds and that's what they wanna talk about along with where people wanna take the state and I've made very. Specific proposals about where wanna go I don't wanna get there.

6172666860. Charlie Baker the Republican running for got a governor is here. We take Europe text messages a well as well it's X 8680 day in your NW RKO high. Good morning Dana.

As an engineer got an underlying. I -- question our candidate they got I'm actually a single widowed mom okay. And I -- gay union job the way and my husband out tomorrow ten years ago. Now let's talk hour -- And the attraction voted the -- is bad. We are off there's bag yeah I cut by 20%. Aren't -- nonsense I'd like we used these and audio engineering base job.

thanks for calling and and good luck to you. I look I said and I said it on this program before the that I worked with unions for years and I have no problem with. Come with their roller their or their objectives. But I believe it's actually fundamental for the governor whoever that happens to be to push back in to represent the interest of the taxpayers had to be an aggressive advocate. For fiscal discipline fiscal restraint and I think a lot of the decisions that people may come. Primarily as a result many cases of the endorse what the price they have to pay to get the union endorsements is they get the -- got about forty of those. Are very high and what you make those promises and commitments and makes it very hard for you a very difficult. Do you acknowledge my -- you know are very. Our our very specific and clear and then you should just go on my website at Charlie Baker Tony to -- come there they're all there to be reviewed and you can make your own cough but at the end of the day. I go into this with a with -- of with a very particular point of view which is at stake government in particular is spending too much money needs to spend less it's too complicated and it needs to be reformed the bureaucracy is too complicated and needs to be. Smaller and and I believe the state -- cannot over the next couple years fund its problems by going back to the taxpayers and back to the cities and towns. Which is the way the statesman basically paying for its overspending for the last couple years.

if the governor was in the studio to retain this question into your response he would say wait a minute jolly. I'm the only governor who's ever negotiated successfully negotiated wage concessions. From those unit to head binding collective bargaining agreement he sat down them and say they. Ladies and Jones and have the layoffs however many of the I have to lay off unless I get concessions and got concessions what kind of grade.

Well yes and he also file a 7% increase. Embrace in the middle of the fiscal mess that that was playing out at a point in time when most people in Massachusetts who were paying taxes and paying the bills for all those folks. We're seeing 5101520%. Reductions in the -- come. He has refused to take a position -- there are real one. This whole issue about giving cities and towns the ability to make changes to their health insurance plans the same way the state can't. And the same way to -- it has which everybody acknowledges -- cities and towns at least a hundred million dollars. He continues to propose. Union only bidding on public construction projects. So called project labor agreements. Which -- 75% of the construction industry every single person and pays taxes. Off the table and out of the bidding with regard to bidding on state work estate projects. And he doesn't think the -- law which makes it impossible for. State government to contract out or or or or privatize state services needs to be repealed that I do and as far as I'm concerned you know you're if you're at -- If you're willing to pursue those what I would consider pretty fundamental basic reforms and you're not serious about reforms.

Thomas your NW RQ -- with Republican Charlie Baker hi Thomas.

Very very good -- but I thank you. They are a couple but TrueCrypt might but my favorite one of the most telling. On the -- is one called sent. You know we can't form billion dollars -- the state budget when I took up as the budget was what the actual number what it up like 22 point two million.

Seven point two and and now we says it's a 27 point six. That's -- numbers again if.

And so what got four billion cut the meat and that's only got four billion cut feel I noticed but not slowing the rate of increase but. I think it Democrats and numbers are just unbelievable the -- My point is sound. You know one of the most egregious in the -- taxes in Massachusetts that almighty professional friends who relocate here. They show -- generic -- they what is this automobile excise tax. But that that that -- to restate reduce debt. And you know like a value added free air attacks on the privilege of having no car.

Tom thanks for the call appreciate your points let me the first thing I guess what I would say is is. Every single year that the governor has been in office including the good ones okay he spent more money they took him every year. And that is a recipe for disaster and that's a reason why we have a big deficit this year and huge deficits structurally next year. Her second thing I would say is is the taxes that I hear about the most when I'm out there. Talking to people are the income tax and -- sales tax in other people are still annoyed about the fact that they voted to get the income to expect to 5% ten years ago. And it's still hasn't happened I was glad you made that point last and and in addition to that you know we -- the the increase in the sales tax last year which was the 25% increase in the midst of the worst recession since the depression you talked almost anybody runs a business. Of any kind of along the border especially in New Hampshire and they feel like they're under siege. And for me it's always been what I call 55 and five when you're dealing come to expect to five the sales tax back to five repealed an increase of -- sort of simplify. Then and get our business taxes down to 5% because of we really wanna grow jobs and create economic opportunity and get all those people who are out of work back to work. We've got to create a more competitive climate I'm especially for business and small business.

More Charlie Baker coming up on 680 WR KL OU you don't break OK I pray I did not break from mr. baker well that's owns the station tomorrow what are we also have here and all the other next time maybe I should definitely doesn't -- Charlie -- Tiger like.

You don't does more -- Good morning. And I wasn't this a little bit like taco won't work that number and then they've -- also have a corporate are also to talk radio but. Yeah it looks like your -- Ramallah. And other criminal I cannot. He's become dry out to -- us from Boston. There and I -- I've got like anti built in iPod and 8000 square feet of -- go in the which I couldn't get away. And condition are -- from the white scientific equipment to put away with a wrinkle outside it was. There's we have drums and availability could be put on the table when -- always made the decision to walk away from the race you know the Katrina you outfitted by the Leo. -- We've seen those in in casinos the -- presented by the Leo which you've taken what was compromised by the lead oak. Yeah and in the house all of which who have walked away and left that job as if you left on the table. -- ago.

Yeah thanks for the question -- of the my my biggest concern about the whole thing was the fact that the governor adding around taking his final position on listen to a four days left in the legislative session by which time everybody it's sort of dug in on their positions. I would have been a lot more aggressive about trying to get something done a lot sooner mean that issue that was an eighteen month legislative session eighteen months. And this whole issue about casinos casinos has been kicking around effort. Two or three years. No what I would it does -- gone. More aggressively early and try to do something -- smaller what I would have pursued and I've said this many times is. One casino -- a couple of thousand slots and put the -- out to bid which I think the tracks would have been pretty well positioned. To secure but the problem with this one folks was. First of all nobody did anything about the governor did not chase is -- hard and try to get something done early which I think was possible in the second thing was. I was the only answer on the table with respect to jobs mean. We need to clean up our regulatory mess we need to send the signal says to every business in Massachusetts are serious about controlling and managing state spending. Which we don't seem to be the most people look at that -- They see that big deficit are a year they -- there than those who commitment from the administration not to raise taxes again they worry about that means going forward. And and to deal with their business costs then. And for me -- the fastest way to get people back to work those through a dozen people are out of work. Create a climate where every employer who you're already exists in Massachusetts feels like. This is a place where they can add people and right now we don't have that that is -- on their hands that is the boys are jolly baker and of course -- before you leave the studio currency has little son. He put together us especially by floor do you --

Pound -- areas. Wow wow you.

Yeah.

IA -- you say it. The -- no way.

Probably right yeah.

It's the man up its response.

Actually.

Good -- some -- all that it's a positive. Believe me I -- tell -- straight. Wonderful. Amazing. Thank you Charlie they are sincere congratulations on the -- victory drive the debate thank you. No more Tom -- come up succeeding WRKO.
