This news comes immediately after it was announced that a new plan to increase personal income taxes by 67 percent will be signed by Quinn and be taken into effect immediately. The corporate income tax rate will also be raised from 4.8 percent to 7 percent marking a 46 percent increase overall. Barbara Anderson from Citizens for Limited Taxation joins us to talk about this and Massachusetts taxes. When President Obama took the podium at Wednesday night's memorial service in Tucson, Ariz., he was greeted with the unbridled excitement of a college campus embracing their commander in chief. Cheers and screams and hoots continued even after he asked for people to sit down. As he started his eulogy, with the somber words, "To the families of those we've lost," voices still cheered and at least three people shouted out, "We love you!" It was not the way most memorial services usually kick off. What did you think of the audience reaction to Obama's speech last night?

    Audio

    Wed, 12 Jan 2011

A recent ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court makes it easier for people injured on snow covered walkways to successfully sue those property owners who don’t clear snow from walking surfaces. Winter is here and so are slippery sidewalks, parking lots and walkways. Previously, Massachusetts courts have ruled that a property owner cannot be held liable if someone is injured walking on new or what courts have called “natural” snow. Instead, owners can be held liable if someone walks over the natural snow and then another person falls down while walking on the same area of snow, called “unnatural” snow by the courts.

People have been coming after me and saying. Hey Charlie how come there's no candidate to run against Martha Coakley free G -- Charlie do you know anybody that's gonna run against Martha Coakley three G. And then the signature deadline went by in my friends call called and they said. We have a candidate there's no candidate against Martha Coakley for AG. -- wait wait wait wait -- still way someone can get on the ballot if someone wants to decide a little bit late here. They can still get on the ballot through stickers during the Republican primary. Don't give up yet I know I know there's somebody good out there in fact a couple weeks go I was on OT ER on channel five. And they were talking about no candidate against Martha Coakley and I looked right in the camera and I said. -- US smart lawyer. Would you like to be EG I gave it my best pitch I don't know Jim McKenna we saw that. But we got the great news over the weekend that we have a candidate to run free G. And we have a true riff that candidate to run against Martha Coakley. In his name is Jim McKenna and I would welcome into the Charlie Manning show for his first. Who live appearance in the Boston media radio or television we're so happy to have you here way to go Jim where -- excited.

Charlie thank you very much that the very -- Production.

All right so -- Telus I people wanna know who is now they don't know anything about Jews that it's great you're running against Martha Coakley. Euro lawyer -- what you've done in your legal career.

I bet -- prosecutor. And readers and bought organize our prosecution.

So you won't -- you worked in organized crime prosecution in Suffolk County here in Boston.

Very early ninety. And speak a little bit yet I'm sorry okay. I also brought in what I was -- with the western -- or six years in the midnight it. In this but I've been in private practice. Remotely interest expense work on the -- won't be civil and criminal. Then also the last seventeen years I've caught on an -- they are based at WPI. A court of law and a.

Worcester Polytechnic -- you're from central mass where do you live you know per. Milbury NASA's did you grow up -- central mass.

I -- didn't. Terry -- part of last.

In Leicester Massachusetts tell people we're Lester is everybody around Boston here's god. Where the hell is Lester a total of where Lester is there. -- just west of west okay so Leicester mass. And you went to right. -- to tell people this and I hope it's not gonna hurt Jim's. Chance here to -- get elected that he went to -- holy cross instead of -- the.

But I went to -- A lot spoke to make up for that.

Okay your single legal then. Yeah single -- aren't real lay you off from going holy cross and I think that's really great that you you know why I know some good guys that lawyers and not bad for a holy cross guys I always staying Tom.

brought one of -- as to what they're my brother went there might set out there. Great place.

So it's a good school and then you went to Boston College Law School. And then you're an assistant district attorney and -- are you doing organized crime cases in Boston then you move on out there to. The western DA's office and what kinda duties did you handle out there.

Well I was supervised the printer we hear a little Obama about how it works when you have -- K because after conviction picking up an appeal. Well I have that benefit the -- so because there's so -- and I still think. Then you would get to the appeals court and the institutional court. It is some -- worked there but more. -- more on your old bubble we read a brief. Here we define issues and argue that.

Terrific and and now you're in private practice what -- need you decide to run you obviously. I'm looking at your bio here. -- six kids yeah US we have pretty busy guy with six kids.

As good as you can do.

And die you teach -- you have year old law practice so for most folks that's a pretty full schedule. What made Jim McKenna decides that he wanted to run for attorney general.

Well I was also working. Legal -- very close.

Okay Mary C Condit in the great candidate for state auditor the woman we hope pulled DR next state auditor yeah all right we blood marries Lisa you're working with her -- are right.

I was. Very that it -- at various I think that's wonderful yeah you're candidate. Mark -- to break. And I was also well we'll -- you described in the Senate who are saying. Don't have a candidate of it. And they went by human side. -- as to why we're now approaching. Now who was built there by. Then.

Frankly I could not not -- We can't we cannot. I will not let this restored in the we still have time -- or that 101000 acres undeveloped -- have a fourteen. Look at that would get that that will we win in November. I think we will objectively. It's along. The very large.

Sure what we will have a voice in here. November. Now.

All of us remember Martha Coakley and the horrible negative campaign she ran against Scott Brown. Accusing Curt Schilling -- being. A Yankee fan and -- asked why she didn't go out and campaign he -- Meet with people the way Scott Brown was too we all over the state cheats you she told the press what do you expect me to do stand out in the cold and shake people's hands. And then when he came to the issue of illegal immigration into we have that ready Chris. Here's what Martha Coakley said when she was asked about what she was doing about illegal immigration.

Technically it's not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts.

Can you play that one more time Chris just in case anybody hasn't heard it before.

Technically it's not illegal to be legal in Massachusetts.

Now do you think it should be illegal to be illegal a message to -- in Massachusetts Jim McKenna.

I will be yet. The law is the law if it's an ethical. That's one thing but -- like the law must you respect -- of course the law that the the primary. They -- it but we'll walk I will -- on behalf of Martha Coakley in their favor in that regard. She was he had integrity so what she spent a lot of politician. Career politicians will not tell you what they think Martha -- get. It was not something. That if she had worked for focus groups or. Talk to an important person in the street with it could -- a good idea that -- is -- what you think and that's what she thought. That's good news the bad news is that she won't force officer met through -- we'll leave that technically not illegal be illegal investors.

Well all right how would you be different than Martha Coakley what would you do differently is attorney general with regard to illegal immigration. Then Martha Coakley is doing now.

Respect. First thing I would do would be to. Fight for a lot that would be. Generally similar to that in Arizona. With oh it's difficult. Our political requires or fight that those who respect what may be illegal. -- offices -- it or not to act upon that. That -- protest -- country either difficult without. We are not as badly off hysterical we have a little problem here but it is an emergency food is terrible.

Sure that everybody would agree with that I mean near being over run out there -- there right on the border.

It is literally the wild west so they're now yes or we could do here is. Separate fact and make it a comprehensive approach in which everyone was arraigned in court. Several. Is required to prove their citizenship but we don't just -- it unpleasant or other identification. If you cannot put persistence of well rated court then. There would be proceeding that could result -- the federal government or deportation. That way. It's universally applied -- we applied. Yeah and it's not in the rain in the middle of a night where you're doing with this -- sort of remote highway now the with a transcript. This court to a broad daylight there's no problem that's been. A live in Arizona law and it worked.

That makes all right so that's number one -- makes inside I'll buy that a 100% what else.

The second planned. That's why didn't president elect November. I suspect they would do would be built from a very -- minutes probably we're. Something you mentioned Barbara it's the result. Which is. As usual. -- it -- current. Attorney general has my understanding -- seven. Press Secretary -- With the salary. Approaching -- 141000 dollars.

Yet the folks at channel five did a really good story and broke that story couple weeks ago about the huge press -- he has on the tax -- rolls.

What I understand we have YouTube channel I think in effect a -- behavior but assistant attorney tells -- to -- But during that we're talking about cutting police and firemen and teachers we need someone to be. Working on term general you have terrible.

I don't think so.

Mike cited -- seven people -- gonna help them home. Put one hot line which would be -- and by those who spoke. -- serving on the Press Secretary. And rather than putting your who killed together they would receive full called relatives who illegal aliens. And -- the -- all calls where appropriate. Or Earl the federal government for deportation.

Well also doubt was the heart of the of legislation that passed the Senate but then was killed in the conference committee would be. A hot line that would allow even four years. Who are trying to him he's. -- You know contractors who were important we get calls from folks all the time who say they can't get any business they always lose out. These companies that unscrupulous we use illegal immigrants amnesty as an employer who's using illegal immigrants and it's well known. The spotlight with a wild do you know what a complaint to go we into the attorney general's office. To be investigated about that employer and I think that's one place we have to absolutely cracked down. Because it's killing the good guys who -- doing it right. We get calls all the time from carpenters and plumbers and roofers and he enters is a great guy who's you know it's continuing his family's -- you know business that's been around for years and he was telling me that. He doesn't have any work anymore because it coming down the pipe because the guys that hired the illegal immigrants and pay him five bucks an hour under the table. -- get all the jobs.

So that's a good idea especially that Charlie Manning -- mentioned that I think that's a very good idea and then finally what your third.

Mark the third point is supports federal. Think we're missing we do not know African this. But you or why -- confessed. That being illegal in what if this is all. Return until. With. With no -- or any consequences. That's being technically legal and physically technically but it would be of equipment has the right that's Blackberry -- this. Perhaps she doesn't believe it's -- to be illegal and that we need to get back the idea that being illegally here is all. If we start with that they took apart while. The ethically open which. This all. That's a that we need to recover we we don't habit now we. Because the idea that. You could be here illegally is not to something like okay I'm. I'm cutting in line they know -- all of this shouldn't be done and we've lost that. We need to get -- and the fact the second floor.

Folks tuning in right now our cink who is this voice talking to Charlie Manning here in the Charlie Manning show. Folks we have a candidate for attorney general. It's an attorney from out the worst area holy cross graduate Boston College Law School graduate. His name's Jim -- he's married he's got six kids. He you know he ET two is he practices law. He's a former prosecutor. In -- Suffolk County in Worcester County has a fantastic background. And that it the beginning of this interview I said. Why you do this you Celek a busy guy ready -- said because someone had to step up and challenge Martha Coakley. And -- we couldn't let her go unopposed -- We are so excited to have him on where the first first us show to have them on. Can you stay another segment -- start to get some calls here put people wanna talk to you Jim McKenna. Keep you busy can you stay another segment with us if we take a little break to the news bureau thank you. That would be great -- our Chris let's take a break right now for the news I know we're going a little literally here. But Jim's gonna stay on the line if you'd like to talk to our new candidate for attorney general here in Massachusetts Jim McKenna. Give us a call 6172666860. Won't come back I want ask Jim about political corruption and why. It's the feds who have to handle all of the big political corruption investigations. And indictments and how the attorney general is Martha Coakley is sergeant Schultz. She sees not being -- is not being she knows nothing. We'll ask -- about that we come back here on the Charlie Manning show on WRK. It earlier on.

We're back on the telling Manning show with the Republican candidate for attorney general who -- challenging. Martha Coakley in November yup you heard it right. There is a Republican candidate for attorney general his name's Jim McKenna. He -- grew up in central Massachusetts. Went to holy cross we don't hold that against him went to Boston College Law School re deemed himself. And then he was said district attorney worked on the organized crime team in Suffolk County.

And then out to Worcester County was a prosecutor they are now is in private practice. Also teaches law. As married has six children. And must have a great wife if she's letting him do this. And he's been on the first half hour with -- this is the first time he's been on nine in the Boston media he just made it does mind I guess pretty much over the weekend. -- are great story as always. I'm Sean Sutton -- broke the story in the Worcester Telegram yesterday Sean breaks a lot of good stories all of us and politics always keep an eye on what John's writing. And hasn't even been in the Boston papers yet that I know of so we feel very lucky to have Jim McKenna around today and Jim. We've already been getting taxed and if you -- text that's a question for Jim you send it to 686868068. Out. How can people help we can they send a contribution. Is there a website -- of the email address what can they do to get in touch with you.

We are just putting a different outlook web site is under construction you're right it's Brando the decision was made Thursday. That's -- who might very wonderful wife who. It -- it -- it. -- supportive of that we have the beginning of the beat it into what they've they've put together. Oh look at that together.

If somebody wanted to send your check today what's the best address. What it is so all you have to do is make up the check to mechanic it's M smalls the KEE and and NA and small CKE ENNA. For attorney general free -- just make it McKenna free -- and send it to.

I guess I peel -- Joe -- five or one. In North Grafton mass. You're 1536. Then securely that. We just formed a committee. Back to committee to elect cinema camera. Near the because -- made up about kind of knew that putting all the stuff there are important campaign they. And actually -- never run for office before. So close so now.

So to McKenna free Jeep and you can send it to PO box 541. North Grafton and GR AF TO when mass and what's that -- again your our respect. -- moments that. Just drop my -- folks -- 015. 36. If you wanna send them a little no congratulating him and saying that you'd like to work for you consented to that PO box two. In -- can get he is -- mail they are and you get all caught up as he gets his whole website ready and does all the things -- candidates need to do it's gonna be. The greatest XP I always say the candidates you know whether was -- well they sat down with our -- rom the all of the great people that I've had -- just put on a real pleasure of working for and working with the over the years. And I always tell them it's gonna be the greatest experience of your life. Because there is not very many things in life where there's a definite beginning. There's a definite and and in the end you know one so. That's that's the great thing about campaigns. Let's pick this grab a couple calls -- get on the south political corruption issue I wanna ask you about what Martha -- is do we -- are not doing about that. Let's start our first call is all of Westwood -- you don't call.

Good mr. McCann I wish a lot of locked in -- get -- the solution. Under the Ol big you should he could really focus on her record. I gave an example. He's supposedly investigated many know what those emails. I never heard the outcome of that investigation. I and I were it to a specific debt apple wants to read or heard of her goal and -- selectmen. City manager town manager of she goes after a small people like last week seven people who worked as called for -- I -- you concentrate on her lack of performance. Billion Googleplex -- you've -- unseat current.

That's great Paul thank you so much and let's let's estimate candor about that Jim mechanic -- joining us today he's the Republican candidate. Just announced for attorney general of Massachusetts will be challenging Martha Coakley I wanted to ask you about that Jim. Mark but doesn't seem to think that political corruption in is something she should be concerned about. We've had indictments. Then try ills and conviction in then people. Like. Senator will percent admitting that she was guilty the other day in federal court. And Martha Coakley hasn't had a neat thing to do with any of this. What would -- do all regarding political corruption if you were fortunate enough to be elected attorney general.

Murder case builder cheated by the he would not not attorney general of the -- them and maybe the most important case. That they have for the political purposes what it does support that out because they're not just of course have -- when signified. That the -- their -- But also written -- public trust. What I would do what you form with received formal public corruption workforce -- AG's office. They're the best prosecute they have for the best prosecutors. And that would put it together and letting them go. Telling them stop it would also point.

Different -- you know fifty is an aggressive attorney general. Who's looking over the air shoulder. It will make a world of difference around the -- we've joked. That that famous picture of Dianne Wilkerson allegedly RI guess we don't even have to say allegedly anymore. To use shoving the money into her abroad is she was being paid off. Did that that restaurant. Martha Coakley probably walks by there every day on the way to the office. And yet she saw enough things she didn't want to know anything didn't have anything to do with a it just isn't a priority for her political corruption because she looked at what happened to Scott Harshbarger let me tell you the background on this champ. Scott Harshbarger -- men. He immediately re opened in you can talk about Scott and he is liberal but he is a straight shooter he. Will not put up with political corruption. He reopened the Billy Bulger 75 State Street investigation. Looked into that. He did a lot of other things and then when he went to run for governor the Democratic Party establishment backed stabbed in the wouldn't help them. Because they thought he had been too aggressive. On the political corruption front that's what happened in Martha looked at that and she said. I'm gonna learn a lesson from Scott Harshbarger I'm I'm on -- it is political corruption I don't wanna see anything what the feds handle that. And you can set a whole new tone -- take our state the whole new direction.

Kelly -- so if I mean if you missed before pretty -- and one of the things I -- Maybe you'll kayaking with a -- Was. Story which has really upset people people are part of the last couple days who were basically involved in this thing. Of all the people in this state to go after. Why would you go -- the garden club. Apparently. -- decided not to collapse but people who are taking bribes but rather quit the garden --

Well one of the Judi says the attorney general is to oversee all charitable organizations. The nonprofit organizations. And right before the election against Scott Brown. Her head of the charitable division. Sid Vicious. Threatening letters. And I guess Martha signed off on the machine didn't it's probably. If she didn't know they were doing -- it's probably a worse. Black mark against her her being attorney general than if she did now. Out to be beautiful little ladies in the boots. Were in the garden clubs around the stage. And mark that sent out these let's say you haven't filed your forms -- the attorney general's office and you could be subject to prosecution. -- my town the garden club ladies of the greed is they maintain. Little flower displays all around town we hear. You know all loved the young gold stars are -- you know that truth you know young men that we lost in wars going back to World War I. They have flowers their fresh flowers all the little islands and different parts of town and they do this all in their spare time they don't get paid for it. They said they have little plant sale every year to support the act. Activities in the garden club did the greatest ladies. And -- Martha Coakley would be sending out -- threatening letters to the members of the garden clubs around Massachusetts. Just tells you that. Nobody's paying attention up there.

It will say that certainly I wasn't working and people should do what he's done legally to work that corporate.

By now. And do you think she really looks into rod the Kennedy family. My guess is not only in -- fact. It was a very interesting story. I believe Martha Coakley was the commencement speaker. That Suffolk University -- Suffolk law school this year while at the same time her office was supposed to be. Investigating. The board at -- because they're supposed to oversee non profits and the compensation paid to with the present in the school. So so. You did Gina how this felt conflicted motorists. Let's grab another call for Jim McKenna. There's a Republican candidate for attorney general we are also excited sounds like a great one I can't wait to meet Jim maybe we've met over the years -- spent a lot of time out. Who Worcester County doing campaigns Peter pollutes campaigns for congress and we've got another excellent candidate for mountain -- Connie this time around -- lead though. I'm running for state treasurer. So this is just great let's talk to us Stephen Melrose you're up next with Jim McKenna the Republican candidate for attorney general.

I. People are good I just wanna say thank you thank you thank you thank you all -- It's of this of this -- ask who's already been chances but I could do it was curious have you had any contact.

Or what the national Republican Party. -- don't. I thought friends people. I have not. That it's they that are so I will they've. Oh. Maybe yes there's so became pretty clear that my role in the campaign is to be just -- candidate. This you're paying. China ended the week if they're going. I have worked well for a good handful of friends working with. My organization that is there's a seventeen year old daughter's -- media director. At ground zero now but people from all over the place in the garden club from everywhere Springfield who. Brewster all on board I don't know where we have been known technically driven than anything yet effective it is a lot. As for openness. Of the day. But we are still not even on a web site yet. This campaign which I have just. Candidate. And through and all -- and the rest before. Our campaign. And I didn't realize it would be like this when six days ago we decided to do with it. In this kind of great.

He's surest these banks of the call now the challenge facing GM. Because he's Gideon a little late here in the middle of July today's July 20. Is that he has to get on the ballot through stickers. The Republican primary is September 14 this that right. And there's a bunch of them all over the stayed. Four congressional seats for a state said -- in state wrapped seats. There's some enough races around the state. Did if when people go win win vote in the Republican primary. Still put a sticker on their ballot. For jam. Then they need to get 101000. Of those certified. He can be on the ballot against Martha Coakley. It's gonna take a huge organizational. Effort. Who really need the folks from every CD in town all around the state. To -- Jim did you get those stickers they had a time to be at the polling places that day. To get them out through the town committees in the state committee to the activists who we know will be voting. -- is gonna be -- a lot of people will be voting you know on that day so it's doable but it's gonna take a real organizational. Effort. And I'm sure will have Jim on as the primary day approaches we'll have been here in the studio to take calls from you. And dies he can explain how all this is gonna work its been done before we've been able to do it before and we should be able to get him on. And then he'll be able to challenge Martha Coakley so if you wanna help Jim just send them out. A little node or if you wanna put a little 1015 dollar twenty dollar check in that would be you really great to. To PO box 541. Will put this up on our website. North Grafton mass. 01536. Just drop a little note. And die he'll have you -- a campaign phone soon and he'll have a little website where you can get in touch with -- he's just getting started we feel very lucky to be the first show he's on in Boston and getting word out for Jim. And when I looked at his bio I just said while this is a good candidate this is gonna be terrific. So there are what will Jim hang on now we got we got to take a break Chris is -- give me the high sign out here Michael my producer. But hang on just one more segment if you can't we get some more calls for you and we'll be right back from the Charlie Manning show on WRK. Well look at.

Back on the challenge -- I can't believe we talked him into staying with us for all all the whole -- at the new candidate Republican candidate for attorney general Jim McKenna. From -- know what's true way yes. --

Thank you for what it's. We have an hour.

Oh my pleasure. We're gonna because you'll lots he better be ready. You grew -- potent the Worcester area -- guys married has six children. Went to holy cross BC law school. Was up prosecutor in Suffolk County organized crime. Then moved out to Worcester County is home base where is the prosecuted there. Now he practices law in teaches law. And it sounds like a terrific candidate to me and would be getting lots of calls. If people want to help this campaign you can drop them -- note that he's just getting started so. But this is sort of the old fashioned way here. PO box 541. North. Raft in two words GRA asked TO when Massachusetts. 01536. So that's the way to get in touch with Jim McKenna let's grab another call here Bob and -- stick your -- with Jim McKenna.

By. Sallyann. -- I just wanna congratulate you were running. And don't forget but not sure we've got the whole organization. That we have fur. Scott Brown to turn over a boy up. And then also all hope you -- that. Being bad Coakley auditor technically it's not illegal to be illegal in Massachusetts I hope you can bring medal around her neck.

I think they'll come up thank you Bob figured the applicable recoup and get back but -- earlier cellular. That the rate which we quit -- thanks Bob what could not not true. This is something. Which I'm committed not let my -- well well we can't as attorney general in the state.
