First consensus tiring dominates the latest jobs report from the government. Yes hiring picked up last month but most of the new jobs were tied the defensible. Hardware hope that they're good they're real or anywhere in the cocaine dealer and Nicole headline.
Headquarters rumored picks Tom I am talk a bit on Boston's ultra -- okay.
We worked hard for years ago. To change the guard now it's up to all of us did guard that James.
We are gonna got the change apparently now we've seen some in the studio the ramp that's why I clearly Mike points in my pocket but I have model. Got in regard to this day got a new age fifteen and pop pop pop pop closed great hearing devolved.
Patrick at the Democratic Convention this weekend talking about how he's on such a wonderful job on. The economy and a lowering the costs of health care and ending violence in the year in urban areas. -- finished the job we can't afford to raise steady years -- the drought is so sorry Charlie Baker we gotta cancel governor's race no need for campaign.
Well we place some big guys the fact that you think you want to finish the job we started is exactly why I got into this race. And I I don't know about you but 9% unemployment 320000. People out of work. Local away because he's in town way about teachers and firefighters and guess what. With this guy the worst is yet to -- we have a two billion dollar structural deficit overcome and into next year and again no reform went to reform our Beacon Hill. -- we're where's the whip it's serious effort to try to shrink the bureaucracy cut spending and live within your mean the fact that.
You're forgetting about all the property tax cuts.
Well how about the talking -- demonstrate more about giving local laid back -- 2000 level I mean they're the big long list the things fit. We've never we've never seen an -- know what you've ever tried.
Jolly the globe started the weekend off than it was in the Friday papers saying that suggesting that the governor has a tail wind of political tale when that is back. That he's found his footing. The democratic activists to not gonna take anything for granted he had a couple of high profile. Issues way he could appear gubernatorial what's your take on all that stuff.
But they have good record of five K road great minimize the Dorchester day parade now. Done by the way that 3.2 miles. Side to side all the way up and down -- when he met went -- to the other. But we got a march with Richard to say we got a terrific reception both of the road race and in the door protested their parade. And by the way the other thing and we also spent Saturday meeting with the whole bunch people who but I worked. They're telling us stories about. You know. Sixty -- hundred. 20500. People applying for jobs that they're trying to get. Many of them out of work for over a year almost everybody -- work for more than 45 months. Most of them saying that they don't believe that. There's only 320000. People out of work a lot of that they think people -- just -- try and the fine job I mean that would. Eye opening and incredibly. Sort of the focus in the urgency that we required state government at this point in time to deal with what -- with the economy is so real when you listen to these people talk thanks you know they talk about people thin and and and government gee where's my raise Tucker way to get my 2%. What about my -- best but what about my pension blob while blocked these people attention at the forward -- particular --
Now there is a there's a communication gap I think it in the legislature in the government in that. I would no matter what you think about to ball Patrick he's a guy who's. They're coming in from the outside has not been able to crack the code on how to have a good relationship with the legislature how does that get changed.
I don't I don't quite see it that way cut I think let my big issue with the governor think you ever really. Took on the notion of reforming beep and tell me remember this that the guys try to put -- walked into a job that have been vacant for twelve years. This is the guy we've spent 100 million dollars new money and its first day in office. This is the guy who proposed new taxes in every single budget he filed. Since he took office this is not somebody who's serious about reform. I reform you chick you you don't you don't -- new taxes -- first solution to every problem.
And I'll thank you for clarifying I didn't mean to imply that he did I'm just thinking about whether that problem is all hope Paul. It is there any way for a governor. And then people question this about a Republican governor to work well with a with the legislature especially when you do with entrenched Democrat.
So I -- for below the -- salute -- with both Republican governors back in the late ninety's we -- very similar situation -- what we have now big budget deficit huge unemployment. Felt that nobody can get anything done. And and over the course of several years we cut spending we cut taxes a lot 27 time. Balanced every single budget got education reform done workers' comp reform done welfare reform done. Well quite a pretty important and significant reforms that have lasted and stood the test time. And and then and we created over 400000 net new jobs in Massachusetts over that eight year period. From our economy grew faster than national average in the past thirty years.
the interesting pattern Iran to challenge from my perspective to it to -- question gee is there -- way is there code. Bill weld and Paul salute you to a highly different guys with two entirely different history salute you horrible long term. Legislative insider. And bill -- more of an outside -- each of them demonstrated a capacity to do and it is absolutely doable. You know and Utah's narrative that every Democrat is you know left wing -- on economic in my tax issues I I I think the I think you know the different.
They're gonna Erica I thought platform that I think that -- this.
Well I think I think bill -- would tell the guys like Bulger and clarity and others are very very important in day and you can work with the budget and what are --
I've got to put this one of today's perspective there's the other point I'd make on this effect. Huge fiscal crisis we've had a for three years okay. There's no time like the big fiscal crisis situation reform. That's when you get your opening you know that's when you can actually put this the sacred cows in the -- table and you could take on the special interest because. That's when people finally say you know what I don't have a better idea I'm willing to go there. It's clear he's got a chance to do that for three years we've been virtually nothing in terms of shrinking the bureaucracy. We're dramatically changing the way big government work for coming up with a plan to make big government live within its main and that's why we -- this to a billion dollar structural deficit next here. Think about the budget be filed in January guys. -- that 600 million dollar cookie from the federal government that may or may not be there and here we are little white. -- weeks before the end of the current fiscal year three weeks before the start of the new blood and no looked like the federal government may not put that. Additional Medicaid money on the table which is gonna create a 700 million dollar hole. In the next few state budget that's just not responsible governing.
It's it's kind of a shocking situation to when you when you look at the degree of dependence we've had on. The inflow of federal money I guess -- which was designed to cover up the fact that. We're already in fiscal crisis so where did that money's gonna dry -- fall off a cliff.
Well nobody's gonna dry up and don't forget we've also been spent in the rainy day -- mean for other. The noise about an awful those sixteen years Republican governors where they left the 2.4 billion dollar cumulative rainy day fund. The by the way Governor Patrick started spending before the economy the crash. So I think in many ways you know we had a runway here is -- they they had a -- they could have pursued betrays a whole bunch reform. Stood shrink bureaucracy strength state government and prepare for this new normal that families and businesses and even cities and towns have been living with the last couple years. They enjoy it to this idea that somehow we should. Step up at this point they let them finish what they started on that one. I think no way we need to go completely different direction we need to cut the bureaucracy we need to cut state spending. We need to get serious about reforming our regulatory environment and create a bit of -- we're businesses wanna invest and create -- Yeah they're couple study -- come out lately that show the work. You know -- like bottom of the barrel in terms of sort of national ranking by by employers with regard to doing business here in Massachusetts that the problem. Good thing that's a bad thing.
Over the weekend Deval Patrick went through a list of I don't know if it's this. Great achievements -- his. Schools for the future but they seem to be what he thinks are priorities. And I want to just play the sound of that thing get you -- react to it. Can we hear that -- So the computer froze sorry.
Well I'm just -- any priority.
Okay -- I -- I'm here I'm on whatever the issue. On civil rights on global warming. On health care costs on social justice on creating jobs are we going to be satisfied. Or are we gonna finish what we started we work.
So this -- those if we take them in order of importance the last thing out of his five was jobs. And he's got sore right social justice oil and global warming global war I got all these got a health care costs well that's a good one but -- hard work but -- but are you going to be are those your priorities as well.
My number one priority is to get people back to work. Okay you spend any time -- sitting down with a roomful of people have been out of unemployed for 45 months or year. And have them tell you this story about what they're going through financially. Socially. Emotionally. And you cannot leave that room and think that anything the job -- be the number one primary you're the number one priority you gotta cut spending. Get state spending under control clean up the regulatory environment cut taxes and created climate here where people will invest. You know we're not we're not gonna we're gonna. Float into the national recovery we have -- right ourselves into the national recovery that has to be the way we go here we can't spend the next three or four years just. Muddle around in this land of mediocrity which is sort of where we're sitting right now and expect that the.
I just wanna make -- I'm hearing you correctly Charlie Baker you actually think for the voters of Massachusetts. That jobs are more important than global warming social justice and civil rights right now.
I think job the number one issue for the voters of Massachusetts absolutely. And -- but. That's what people talk to me everywhere I go and frankly it's what I got into this rate in the first place. I didn't know like the direction if they would admit I -- like the fact that we were developed in our budget like the fact that we're ready impacted. And like the fact that we were cutting local aid and it's grown -- except an education reform mean those other. So they're -- sort of critical. Critical component of any any -- and expect to compete going forward and and we're not competing right now we're not focusing on it obviously based on that -- the priority. And that's where the focus really have to --
Todd -- that are off the show today talking running down clip of Deval Patrick and his reference to social justice and then. I kind of contrasting that with the issue of the too violent. Shootings and deaths of fourteen year old in Boston over the past couple weeks trying to figure out what if any thing government can do about it Todd Lee Todd leaves it at the at the footsteps of the democratic Friday. Saying that they control all the machinery of other cities -- just curious you've read about that your dad you've got three children every bit every parent top breaks. What can or should government be doing that did not doing now to confront and address these type of issues.
Well let's talk a little bit about the stuff that's going on in Boston which by the way. I think it Davidson the city of Boston middle lot of that the mayor and all those other folks. Were involved it doesn't. Yeoman work over the course the past decade to sort of rethink everything about law enforcement of prevention and crime fighting a minute that the great story. But let's take let's take you know I think a couple of weeks ago the -- Governor Patrick made a mistake when he walked away from. -- run the executive order to create some sort of an ongoing relationship between the federal government. And big government over dealing with crime and illegal immigration right. The governor -- at the time. Let the -- do -- the third doing what they do with the state does okay we shouldn't be we shouldn't be talking to each other that was disaster. Well here we are what do we have embarked right now we have a big obvious problem it's associated with -- US attorney the attorney general. City of Boston state of Massachusetts ought to be engaged in an ongoing discussion. About the things that they can work together -- to for both prevent and effort to prevent crime in this city and pursue swift justice and this was something again that. You know back in the day all right bill Wheldon Scott Harshbarger the federal government. All work pretty well together they would ten point coalition and other. To create a pretty comprehensive and unified approach. To dealing with biochemistry. From Boston and that's where we should be -- about this sort of thing we should --
Charlie Baker appreciate you being here any closing thoughts.
I guess my closing thought guys would be that. I think Massachusetts is great spirit of love living here my whole life and it's time to get serious about. Reining in spending -- factor to create a climate where we can create job and get those people I thought this weekend to look for hundreds of thousands of other. Back to work because that's what they need to be able to do that pay their mortgage live their life and protect them and they care of their family.
OK before you go there's a good Republican I watch him and know that there's an important birthday today in the world of music. Tom Jones.
That right how old is he told you give -- 10570. Is something I was seven years I thought so so it's. -- We know is when your favorite so if you like to dance field for a generic you guys did Charlie don't Rebecca. London to Washington. Let's see all. No one is Red Sox Nation and give John Jones another shot. The famous well it's a welcome sight and I guess it's from Wales of the regular side and over -- that. -- There's going over its birthday to on the same -- our side of -- twins really -- I give us an -- hundred and get high camp and the same now this is not follow this maybe this government Russell -- Thomas shot six AV WR yeah.
On whatever the issue. On civil rights on global warming. On health care costs on social justice on creating jobs. Are we going to be satisfied.
