we have a new series we do with the pioneer institute to where -- each week we're bringing on any candidate for public office here in Massachusetts so you get to meet the people. Who wanna have the jobs that have so much impact on our lives joining us now. Is one of those characters he is running for state senate Scott Brown's old district. Against their Richard Ross on an author of the candidates involved in the race but I think there are in the democratic side although they had their primary they have not just during era I think Chuck -- doctor -- Malone chairman -- NW RQ Peter welcome.

I thanks for having me here.

Thank you for joining us today tell us about your -- profiling your program.

Sure well very briefly I'm an emergency physicians. -- but I have been impacting about security at best of butter me up but you know. And had a -- health care policy spent a couple of years actually working for senator more as an adviser and a state senate committee and health care financing. I've -- you know from that background decides to run because. You know you he would never if mission really what people go through every single day of their lives -- it's sort of out of it. The societal issues affect people every single day and it should stick it -- fighting for -- you name it. -- seeing those those problems as well that the policy background decided that I can make an impact. At a much bigger level -- try to fight for the things people really need on an everyday basis and the coming from outside the typical political spectrum I think it's mean but the unique perspective as well that independent voice which is really great this district.

Peter Tom -- a big issue that came up recently in the house will not go over the Senate where you hope to be next year by virtue of this are even -- By virtue of the special election casino gambling. And of course you've got the -- tracking it in the Senate district are right next to a lots of jobs. That's taking your take on casinos are you fall -- your against the.

I've I've consistently consistently been against casinos and you know there's been the main reason for that is some -- talk about jobs but a lot of that problems become a casinos really is that there's a real. Sort of devastating impact the local businesses the local community. Another state that try to -- same thing that he real problems when local restaurants local hotel people. You know that just are out of work in a local community. Then. Problems that we see with revenue to local restaurants and hotels for example. So everything we do and it's it's gonna have a bit of a trade off and -- I think that that's sacrificing the local community it's for the sake of the casinos and slot is not a good idea.

Last week there was a vote in the legislature on whether to continue giving. Social services to people were in the country illegally how would you have voted on that.

Well I think it's important that we take care people or in this country but the problem in my mind. So we're just not addressing immigration issue head on. And we need to make sure that we're going after. The real problem here which is that. We don't necessarily keep employers accountable enough. We don't have a system in place we can actually measure who's here legally and illegally. Ended the system that we actually haven't played. And have over unidentified people who -- here actually legally. -- so if we can come up with a system where we can hold employers accountable for. And those who were here looking for job. Well then we've we've basically have stopped the reason why people are coming here. For undocumented.

But in terms of the millions of people who are here legally that 200 in 25000 or so estimated to be in the state of Massachusetts you are for. Using taxpayer dollars to support them with social services.

Well always -- a certain extent I think that we have to make sure that what if people are ending up in the burden here we're paying them anyway. And so we need to come up with a clear way to make sure that we are responsibly. Getting to that the root of the problem.

So you were favoring health care health care plans he mean for all illegal.

Are not at all actually absolutely not but we have to recognize. That if if people are here for undocumented reason. And there are ending up in my written your in my I mean it's taking care of them and that's. Costing taxpayer dollars as well right zone that so you know I'm not even necessarily. And interest that much and that particular item as I am and but just having common sense approach. How we address immigration problem and again that that just comes down view of that the reason that people are here is they're looking for -- And so -- Blocked blocked their process analysis that affect the matter simply of that we need to do a better job right now the state house. Of focusing on how we create jobs in the short term and long term for people here. And again we've we've mentioned this -- but as a sort of politically. Expedient answer the short term job creation. My real focus -- state senator is gonna be to make sure that we get to work building job immediately. That comes into supporting small businesses small business growth. -- providing them -- with the ability growth through increased access to credit. But quick action sinister group in new industries and growing industry is like the energy like.

You don't need a let me have it paid a lot letting up -- when you talk about access to credit and you're talking about some type of state. State bank because this traditional banks are staying away and while -- around the subject of job creation of the dust. The governor has proposed a tax increases and so order in candy and a few other. The issues because he says look we have a revenue problem how would you vote on those issues as well.

Well in terms he the issue with access to credit. I'm not entirely sure yet but -- mine eight state owned bank. I know we only have that at one place in this country which is the North Dakota and correct I didn't write up but what we do in this state currently as we you have. Support for -- for larger banks. And I think it would be really interesting to take a closer look. Just sort of seventy tell them how he would do this but a closer look at how we can speak perhaps refocus some of that. Are smaller community banks which have been really responsible in terms of their lending to small businesses. And they know that the small businesses in their community. And ten directly in relation let them help us while the --
