What was Your Reaction to Presiden't Obama's Speech in Arizona

When President Obama took the podium at Wednesday night's memorial service in Tucson, Ariz., he was greeted with the unbridled excitement of a college campus embracing their commander in chief. Cheers and screams and hoots continued even after he asked for people to sit down. As he started his eulogy, with the somber words, "To the families of those we've lost," voices still cheered and at least three people shouted out, "We love you!" It was not the way most memorial services usually kick off. What did you think of the audience reaction to Obama's speech last night?

Who should be responsible for Clearing Snow from Sidewalks?
Audio
Wed, 12 Jan 2011
A recent ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court makes it easier for people injured on snow covered walkways to successfully sue those property owners who don’t clear snow from walking surfaces. Winter is here and so are slippery sidewalks, parking lots and walkways. Previously, Massachusetts courts have ruled that a property owner cannot be held liable if someone is injured walking on new or what courts have called “natural” snow. Instead, owners can be held liable if someone walks over the natural snow and then another person falls down while walking on the same area of snow, called “unnatural” snow by the courts.

I was driving home from the show yesterday afternoon and we were listening to us how we car and as always with jay Todd working for a men and the Howie Carr so far into the best it's everything we wanna hear. And in case you haven't heard this one now let me set it up. President Obama goes to. The opening game in Washington yesterday's Washington Nationals are playing any throws out the first pit and you -- never played baseball full page he throws -- we not like President Bush in Yankee Stadium after 9/11 that's a -- In many goes up and he has an interview with the announcers. And you know the announces are excited they get to interview the president of the United States and here's how it goes.
When your paper White Sox players and you know. That. Know the truth isn't lot of cups I liked it. But I did not become a Sox fan until -- condition. All I was brought up. Why so I end up execute. Local history.
And there's more to this month or so the easiest way he lived in Chicago 25 years he supposed to be mr. self side. The -- the -- White Sox of the Southside team the -- Hudson sort of the -- the north side team. And so the announcer says. Who's one of your favorite players -- you think of all the good guys that have played over the years heck just a few years ago the White Sox won the World Series and it. Frank -- miss all kinds of good -- jurors just going back over the years it Frank Thomas going to be a hall of Famer -- he's not already anyway it's pretty. Easy to lock him up -- one player's name if you followed the team at all. I mean Martha Coakley of course we remember -- Curt Schilling was a yay van and then and could cost -- the election. And here's the smartest man the smartest man in the world. And he gets asked the simple question -- totals one above the players you like on the White Sox over the years and what does he say.
When I moved to Chicago. I was living close to. What was that -- department. Had went to a couple lives in this film love and the nice thing about this boxes it's real blue collar baseball great that we always -- the cups very. There are politically. So why and it's windows -- is bigger and have a good time president.
So again. Can't name anyone he'd love -- blue collar -- used to go to the games all the time charges -- won the World Series in 2005. -- that's what I said just a couple of years ago when he was killed. -- state senator and I think that I think. -- or whatever it's called now was in his district. So if someone -- to how we yesterday and said I think he was spending too much time and salt -- links are not enough time in myths are. One of the best political -- of the year. So anyway you know we all of a good laugh and everybody's laughing and he is the smartest man in the world you know -- enough fool out of himself again. And then you pick up the newspaper today and all of a sudden it's not -- laughing matter. Here's the lead story in.
Obama limit when the US would use nuclear arms. Now of course everyone knows about our nuclear policy. We were the first ones to develop new clear weapons. We used -- twice. And the war World War II you know use them twice and Hiroshima are not of -- and then they've never been used in warfare cents. And since World War II we have never had a world war because of the to Horowitz we went through what they call the whole war of course with. The Soviet Union and now we have another. It's wrong. Competitor in the world and nuclear China. They've never been used since 1945. Never then used. In the to torrents of our nuclear policy has on most levels. The world safe from world war it's worked for president after president from. Harry Truman to Dwight Eisenhower to John Kennedy the Lyndon Johnson to -- then. To Gerald Ford. To Jimmy Carter to Ronald Reagan. To George W bush to Bill Clinton. To George -- to George HW bush to Bill Clinton two to George Bush and now President Obama. Can't -- well enough alone. It's always work. We've always had the deterrent. With kept the world safe. And he has to change. Here's the story we're just watching by the way the press conference as we came on the air. It was a press conference with the defense secretary Robert gay who made the announcement and did not look half. And then Hillary what was jumping into -- self on the back in of course Hillary would be all for something like this. -- the story Obama limits when the US would use nuclear weapons. President Obama said Monday that he was revamping American nuclear strategy. To substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear wet and discussing his approach to nuclear security the day before formally releasing his new strategy. So he doesn't sit down with the with the New York Times reporters to sort of lead it out there before it was announced that the new press conference today by secretary gates and Hillary Clinton. Mr. Obama described this policy is part of a broader effort. Edged the world toward making nuclear web and obsolete. In -- create incentives for countries to give up nuclear ambitions. Mr. Obama's strategy is that sharp shift from those of his predecessors. Not only worked since 1945 folks. President Obama the smartest men in the world now he has changed this. A sharp shift from. Those of its predecessors and seeks to revamp the nation's posture in the new wage. In which rogue states and terrorist organizations are greater threat than traditional powers like Russia and China. It eliminates much of the -- ambiguity that has the liberate it deliberately. Existed in American nuclear policy. Since the opening days of the Cold War. Listen to this. For the first time the United States is that it's -- we committing. Not to use nuclear weapons against nonnuclear state. -- compliance with the nuclear non proliferation. -- that treaty even if they get. The United States -- biological. Or criminal chemical web and or launch a rippling pack. So today the president United States -- to every rogue nation in the world. We won't know. Use nuclear well and against you now we haven't used them since 1940s. But -- we've always had the deterrent today that a jury doesn't exist anymore. Even if you what -- our country. In kill millions of people would biological. Or chemical weapons or launch a crippling cyber attack. It would shut on our nation in check on our economy. So that's what President Obama said today. That's what his new proposal is it was just announced in Washington. We're gonna have an expert join us later in the hour on this. Frank god Gaffney who was. Responsible for US nuclear weapon policy and president Reagan's Defense Department is going to be joining us a little bit later in the hour to talk about this. But we wanna hear from you. 61726. At 6868. The number if you wanna join us if this -- easy. Why is the president of the United States. Seeking a way to current it is the heck did our country -- when president Kennedy. -- a win win the Russians had. Nuclear -- it was starting to put in weapons and missiles into Cuba could have been new nuclear. Roll them out in the rat into. -- Now where he can win that term we're telling world nations. Like sea area. Hand in hand. A rack in Iran that if you hack us with. Biological or chemical weapons. Or even a crippling cyber attack whole -- China asked what they just did to Google over there. Hello China. Then we won't use our weapons -- few. Why would you take it to turn off the people that has were. For our country for. Since the 1940. It has kept the world basically safe it is kept us from having a world war. And they also announced that yes what we're not going to develop or build any new nuclear -- it. If there's break throughs that come through guess what we're not gonna get involved in that anymore. 61726. A 6868. The re -- this is back to the New York Times piece which was we of the New York Times today. The release of the new strategy known as the nuclear posture review the NPR. That's what Hillary Clinton was just calling it the press conference. Opens and -- his nine piece of nuclear diplomacy. Geared toward reducing wet. Mr. Obama plans to fly to prod to sign a new arms control agreement where Russia on Thursday. In the net suite will host 47 world leaders in Washington. For a summit meeting on nuclear security. Now -- our economy going. -- our country going here is this what you want the president spending his time on flying to -- to sign a treaty with the Russians. And then. Hosting 47 world leaders for summit on nuclear security I guess. I guess the unemployment rate must be to 3% and everybody want to job has one. Nobody's worried about money because the president spending next week. Talking about new -- security. Isn't that wonderful that's that that's his latest priority. And then. Asked about the escalating confrontation. With the rain and mr. Obama said he was now convinced that. -- course they are on would provide them with nuclear web and -- ability close quote. -- he gave no timeline. So he's throwing in the towel on Iran getting nuclear web and that's fine with him and yes what if Iran or Syria. Other enemies that we have in the world attack the United States -- Chemical web and or watch a crippling cyber attack killed millions of Americans guess what. Today the president of the United States said we're taking the nuclear deterrent off the table. There's a lot more here but I know you want to jump on the line -- not -- will also lighting up of course. And like I said we're going to have the top Defense Department official on nuclear policy under President Reagan joining us. In this hour but let's let's not go right to a calls here Paul in Boston your first today on the Charlie Manning show.
Money -- great hi Paul it's absolutely outrageous. I don't feel about a general sort of met at bold. Taken immediately it -- read to him because they won't support.
Like just I was just watching the press conference Paula thanks to you call. And secretary gates of course was there and reading the policy and he was reading it by road. And you could tell he was not happy with this policy one bit. And then Hillary Clinton of course jumps up and talks about would have breakthrough it is and how wonderful. How does making our country we are and less able to defend ourselves. During this. Serious. Crucial time in the world how was that matter I don't understand. Bill in Woburn you're next -- Charlie Manning.
I'm from Chicago -- and any. Chicago baseball even. Words brought. --
Injury -- Note to bill no kidding I mean I mean to play yeah. We we played that put at the beginning just because it's so funny and it shows how shallow and -- years and yeah all. And we can we can all laugh at it he could name one player from his heat you know that where I live for 215 warrants.
They do have problems to come down our street and shake my grandmother's here and yeah.
If I mean I know he's not the only not to even Abacha I don't. He knows nothing and AM Joe The Plumber. Problematic during election and that -- have him investigated.
They sure did. But no we wanna get back we just played that quote for you because it's good for a laugh you know what. This nuclear policy this new nuclear policy is no laughing matter Bob in Milford your next -- Charlie Manning on WRKO.
Money. In that guarantees. Right out to disparate united eight.
What sense does this make Bob that's what I don't understand. How many presidents we just went down the list going back -- Harry Truman who of course. All -- back in in it and World War II. And it's we've gone down through the ages Democrats Republicans. You agree -- you can disagree with -- that they all came here -- about our country and protect. In our people. And now we have a president today. It stands up and says even if were -- would biological. Or and the old -- and we will not use nuclear weapons. I mean they must be laughing at us all around the world. Bought. Sorry -- raving about this but it just it I. It drives me --
Well less -- a little more fireworks and it. Our radio station has an audio re already. If you are all. My. Aching to be there -- alert -- and rally and it leadership are all of DNC. And around don't go out and went to quote. If you got a very patient. I -- about her current and farmland. Area.
You well you know what my homeland is. Ireland all for my grandparents came from their -- 6172666868. And I think the old homeland I think Ireland note no offense. Mike in Nashua, New Hampshire next to Charlie Manning.
me anymore so I'm not. Right well --
Let's we're gonna have an expert on here Mike coming out and who was a top adviser under president Reagan Defense Department on on nuclear issues and Tom. I think probably he'll be able to shed some light on what this really means for a policy in our country. On the if you wanna talk to him or if you wanna talk about this issue I think it's really. Really important you know we'd love to have fun on the show but. When things like this happens it's not a funny day 61726. A 6860. Will be right back from the Charlie Manning show.
Altered embryo a lot of wanted to hear what this guy asked this very. You do get him out for free -- Charlie remembering on Boston's talks resume a M 680. --
Those states I think we really have moved on from the Cold War we're looking at different threat environment. And for the Russians it's not what it's like that's -- problem.
Well I think this new announcement today by the administration certainly -- side. Tongues wagging in Washington. Back on the Charlie Manning show on WRKO 6172666868. The number. We're talking about the big story of the day. Obama limits when US would use nuclear arms he's making the largest change in American nuclear policy. Since we began having nuclear weapons going back to president Harry Truman. A policy that to work for our country. Have the world from having another world war remember we had. World war is two in the last century and ever since we got in the nuclear capability. Men and Russia -- and break and then France and other countries got it. We haven't had -- world war is because of the deterrents. People body if you go after us we're gonna go after you.
What we've won that. Through the determines. The the the determination of President Reagan in others and -- that your. Pope John Paul all the people that played to two great role and in ending the Cold War and now were in a situation where President Obama. C thinks we can he can do better. Smartest man in the world thinks he can do better than other --
And work and work for so many years. 6172666868. If you just joining us when we bring you today. Story just broke in the New York Times this morning and at noon they just had the press conference in Washington with. Second Defense Secretary gates announcing it Robert Gates and Hillary Clinton who course now it's -- stay. Gates was not happy all in making this announcement you can see that this is not anything you believes in the secretary defense. But President Obama said Monday he was revamping America's nuclear strategy. To substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear -- and.
It eliminates. Much of the ambiguity that is deliberately existed in American nuclear policy since the opening days of the Cold War. For the first time for the first time the United States -- six illicitly committing. Not to use nuclear web and against nonnuclear nations. Even if they -- the United States. We've biological. Or chemical weapons. Or launched rippling cyber attack against our country. So if one of these nations goes after us. With biological chemical weapons kills millions thousands hundreds of thousands -- you put a number on it of Americans. We are now saying to them well we just we just won't you side our nuclear deterrent against. Which of course just in -- insulin and opens the door. This the strategy to be released on Thursday that today -- months way. Partly because mr. Obama had a adjudicate among advisers. Who he. Feared he was not changing American policy significantly. Enough. Why do you wanna change it Mr. President it's work since the 1940s. And those who fear that anything to receive this. Would embolden potential adversary. He ended up with the dog in that differed considerably. From the one president George W. Bush published in early 2000 into. Just three months at the 7 September 11 attacks. Mr. Bush to argue for -- Cold War re thinking of nuclear deterrence reducing America's reliance on those weapons. Mr. Bush's document also reserved the right used new via web and -- to deter a wide range of rat. Close quote including banned chemical and biological weapons and large deal conventional. So President Bush kept the same strategy that we've always had to deter a wide range of threats including band. Chemical and by -- biological weapons and large scale conventional attacks. Mr. Obama's strategy abandons that option. That's the new policy by the bomber administration. Love to hear what you have to say about it I I just don't get it. In this year's theory is serious it's off. This is a real. Problem for our country. To take a policy that to work since Harry Truman was president. All through the fifth the sixty's the seventies yeah eighties and nineties. Into this new century. And now we have President Obama changing it. Going in a different direction. Taking away a policy of deterrence to work for us. All of these years and saying basically to rogue nations. We don't care you that you if you do send to us. That deterrent isn't there anymore. 61726. That 6868. The number 6172666868. We're hoping to be joined by.
Frank Gaffney junior who was responsible for US nuclear. Weapons policy in the Reagan Defense Department. He said he is also he is the head now of a group called the Center for Security Policy. And said he was gonna get in touch with us today on this but we haven't heard from him yet. So will rather hear from you 6172686060. It's the number. Coming up in the next hour we're gonna be joined by the state treasurer of the commonwealth and candidate for governor Tim he hill. So you can line up your questions for him. 1 -- join us that would be terrific. And he's always had good. Yes to have on and I think we're gonna have all the candidates for governor Iran and its gonna be really interesting. On the Charlie Manning show. It's amazing in. Watching the press conference as as we were coming on the year today that was the most interesting thing host of the tremendous credibility. That it. The Defense Secretary Robert Gates has he's one of the few.
Of course they he was the one who sort of led off the press conference. And tape like you wanna grab a couple of these calls here okay great. Okay great -- mr. Gaffney. Everybody's calling in if you're -- on the line -- Six what 76 a 6868. Buddy defeat via. New belied all buzz again and double -- but we sure will. And anyway when you saw Robert Gates they are today you could just hell and announcing this new policy including the fact that. We are gonna shut down in the development. Of new nuclear wet and new technology. New things that might have dust and protect our country and add to the deterrence would make so much sense. And he said but now that policies and and we're not gonna be doing that anymore. We're not going to be developing any new nuclear weapons so that's another part of this Obama policy. And why the president wants to change from one work for us all the -- years would be really true. It's really doesn't make sense to me something that's really protect the the world. In you wonder too when he meets with the Russians in Prague next week. What he's gonna do to reverse our policy it's protect Europe all of these years. In NATO all of these years the policy of course that was put into place by President Reagan. And ended the Cold War won the Cold War for us. And for Europe. In -- Hugo this country hit have you ever seen the time. When -- we work. Do you ever see a time when saying to people well I know I can do that is so right can do that let you know I'm not gonna do you know this. But let me you -- let's -- down this path instead of when you show weakness. How does that look at the rest the world.
Doesn't make any sense to me. Six months have been 2666868. Number Walter in Wilmington you're next with Charlie Manning on WRKO.
say in my oh no beach scene like. It seems like this or burden is dismantling our country and all we do it. Are our amongst our spell.
Well I don't think the American people are gonna react well to this and I'll tell you -- you know I'm lucky I'm wear -- out here right.
You might not well but. What what you. Have representatives. Don't let us know what. Everybody has you talk to people on the street you are our overall. And every party.
Just the same the same bass anglers are you people that are currently in talks to a mystery.
It has any other opinion and what this -- you wouldn't each nation destroying everything.
And meanwhile it comes to parched and and it's 30000. All of the Koppel.
Can go and.
And she had pretty much read so any semblance of the -- and not let.
Horse not Walters he doesn't want anything to do with the common man. The amazing thing -- years.
All the things he needs to be dealing with including the economy which is job number one. How you gonna get people back to work how we gonna get the economy turned around and instead. This is its priority now to change our new clear policy. A flight abroad next week and signed some agreement with the Russians. And then come back in host. 47. World leaders to talk about you know getting rid of new X I mean it's like you're talkin' to you know the the weird guy that was sighed next he in the bar you know win in Hebert to.
June afternoon. Do you. Since moods today. Residents aren't supposed to do that Jim in the car you next to Charlie Manning.
Joe Torre I'm Jim -- are.
Up to date on what's going on end I want them to understand. That. How how important this is in in to change our policy after since the 1940s. To Democrats Republicans. Liberals conservatives. All those years and then this guy comes along the smartest men in the world and he's gonna change it.
I have one question I mean people aren't.
The right thing to do why would you --
Will be it's no good in less you can announce it because he's playing to a certain faction in the world in in our country. I mean that's that's one of the wines that they use here in the story in the New York Times where they say that. That American nuclear policy. Has been. The -- It has to -- existed in American nuclear policy since the opening days of the Cold War. We didn't talk you know we saw -- let people know it's it's like. It's like you know when you're a bar and there's crazy drunk guy there and just sort of let him know that. You're you're if you wanna mess with someone it's not gonna be me. And you know they get the message. And that's what all around the world have done and that's why we haven't had world wars since World War II was because it was.
They. Remind you this reminds me of -- and why not or will. It worked out a smile and a god in your despite. It got away that don't deter.
Exactly and we have had begun since the 1940s. And that's why there hasn't been any war. And now we're saying and Jim thanks the caller really appreciate it. Now we're saying that even if the United States is a hack by biological. Or have a cold wet and or crippling cyber attack we're announcing to the world today that were not using nuclear weapons. Wrko.com. Click on the Charlie Manning page in doubt we've got a -- asking for your opinion on this. We love hearing from you whether you call in if you wanna send us an email -- Manning at wrko.com. Of course they are and that's what makes this policy by the president. So. Astounding. To -- to put it nicely 6172666868. Were back on the Charlie Manning show. I know that this is complicated and it isn't what we talked about all the time that it is so very. Important. They have a policy in place. It is war since the 1940s. The policy of nuclear deterrence. And why President Obama in the people around him who of course. There's not a lot of expertise in foreign policy with president of bomber and its people just like there's no business back around our jobs back round with a they're mostly government -- and and -- a higher education and educators. That's that's pretty much it if you only saw -- secretary gates and announcing this policy on the news. That President Obama has changed the United States nuclear deterrent policy. As of today. The United States is it's listed we committing. Not to use nuclear weapons. Even if we are the United States is -- Biological. Or camera away and all launch with a -- league -- cyber attack. That's the president's new policy totally changing a policy that work for our country since Harry Truman was president in 1940s. Let's go back to call straight -- 6172666868.
