The Gardner Museum Heist
Wed, 24 Mar 2010|
It's been 20 years since one of the largest art heists of all time went down in Boston. Thirteen frames still hang empty in the Dutch room of the Gardner Museum as a reminder of the precious works of art stolen in the middle of the night on March 18, 1990. We will speak with the museum's director of security Anthony Amore about the heist.

Where it's time to check in now on the progress of would be the greatest art heist in history -- It's it's the theft of several paintings worth millions tens of millions of dollars. From the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum back in 1990 on Saint Patrick's Day just -- around saint Patrick stay just about twenty years ago. This this this month. And they're the investigation continues it's a it's it's truly the they a mystery of worldwide proportions these paintings have just vanish off the face of the earth even though there were thought tens of millions of dollars. And I joining us now where -- ought to have for this this whole hour and we're gonna talk about this will be it will be taken your questions if you YA didn't. Also while will be soliciting your help in finding these paintings in the original award by the way of a mere five million dollars. Tim Cahill was very interest and -- C wouldn't solve all of his fund raising -- dilemmas that as a lame doctor if you were. Come -- that and of course she's cut he's straight he's thought of maybe he would come up with a once few years back with. With a and abandoned that cost so like knockoff that that ended up in a in an abandoned. Safe deposit box in a bank in Cambridge. But joining us here at this hour is you have to be a more he's the security director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum and -- security answer your questions about it tell us what's going on. Now while wet what is going on -- with rental lot over the last few weeks about this that -- supposedly they're taking DNA is dirty truth to this story about the DNA samples or is that an overblown story. Com.
Well there is truth to it. The the FBI has come taken some additional piece of evidence -- submitted them for DNA analysis. The part I think that's a bit confusing to people is that there's not new DNA. That's been discovered for analysis and it and it wasn't done because of the twentieth anniversary. Rather the FBI has continuously taking every bit of information they can and in recent -- just like you would. With fingerprints are we examining different suspects so it's an ongoing process they didn't. They didn't wait for the twentieth anniversary Patrice.
We -- talked about this over over the years and I just don't I don't understand the the biggest one of the major suspects. Is in prison for a federal prison he's -- committees in his forties I guess our right. -- any slocum and another twenty years I believe -- these -- who's gonna be in his sixties before he gets out. I I can't I've never been able understand why somebody I don't care how much the reward is when you get out. He he's he's T if you know something you think you wanna get out of prison now city dias is this guy still way and can we use his name is give it as.
I think it sounds to make -- turn right David -- current and I. I mentioned mr. turner because he was listed in that in a book that came on about a year ago called the right got there heist. And down the author named -- as his prime suspect into. -- I would -- before -- to -- or anybody outside preface that you know basically everybody's suspect because we don't have her paintings back in the right admitted to the crime. Which -- right I mean he's. 43 years off. About that NTS 22 more years left on a sentence so -- longer than -- senate's here at the radio station for Christ's sake I'd do anything to get out of my senate's. If I can find the things I delivered the night to get away with. That that would be great Tommy Tune and I hope I have to tell you a reward if you. Fantastic but I agree with you I mean I'm. It's difficult firms that are on the same age is this person and I think to myself if I had to -- another 22 years. Imprisoned or it could just simply to a painting secular the pain and I were given him up years ago char capsule doesn't make it I that's why don't we can tell -- no mom. You know I think there's -- two parts of this oftentimes people are trying to focus on who did it -- and -- The FBI and US attorney's office and -- of like mind were more interest to wear -- today. So arm I think those two different things and with the for lack of better evidence you to try to find out -- who did it that would be key to following it from 1990 to 2010. What -- give us the cliff.
Notes version of what happened just in because and a lot of people are new to the area or just have never followed that I mean as much as it seems a part of our lives every day. -- give us that a brief description of the heist happy --
And in the early morning hours of march 18 and 1990. I just 124 REM certain. Lesson two hours after it Saint Patrick's -- officially -- on the calendar. Two thieves disguised as Boston Police officers. Rang the buzzer at the employee entrance on palace strode to the museum and told the guards that they were there -- I've investigated disturbance. Income and one of the great mistakes and security history the guard against protocol. -- the or hit the button which. Open -- door to these feeds and basically once they were in it was defeated complete there was. Not much -- cards into that they weren't there were armed -- professional now and they were trained to you know and most guards security guards are trained to apprehend people. The set of server report type thing and our case it's keep people out. Perhaps there for a -- or so once these guys ran. They. Basically in a nutshell told the guards that they had warrant a worn off for one of them. Pretended to arrest both of them and once they had the two security guards handcuffed sent to them and gentlemen this is a robbery. 24 minutes later they made their way up into the galleries and museum. It went about stealing thirteen priceless pieces of art com as well some junk. -- not my estimation every single pieces incredibly important enough charge -- but it did its job in terms of monetary value they stole some stuff that was worth nothing compared to the stuff they could've made off -- so. Let's I think that's if I would never use -- term chunk progress is congress collection I think that's a fair point in terms of to get. The napoleonic chenille which doesn't have an enormous price tag attached to it they did walk by but the challenge is Raphael. It's the kind of thing that the you know if you worry if you were setting up well I a bar with a flat screen TV in your basement. It's the kind of thing that you would want hang in behind the bar right -- Soledad this tight tight. You know that's it I'm very interesting point because the other things that were taken from a gallery where framed contraris in -- caused by take jockeys and horses which I think you could also see. Men in vision and bar in someone's basement and Somerville. In summer fill our efforts our -- South Shore yes. And but. And again -- it further chip pointed the juxtaposition between what was taken from that room. While the other thief was taken six pieces from the Dutch room. And those six pieces amount to. The biggest haul in -- theft history and actually. I would say it's the biggest property theft in recorded history anywhere. I'm art isn't worth tens of millions it's worth hundreds of millions stuff at at least 500 million dollars. Another first in Boston -- The biggest robbery in human history in terms of monetary value what's the most valuable painting that's gone. But if the the most valuable missing painting in the world is premieres the concert. Which sticker from the doctrine in the second most valuable stolen painting the world is. Appropriate storming the ship just when you gave me that's -- one -- really notice it's the only she skipped that cram for an effort painted. So those -- that's number one and two most valuable in the world. And you could argue that together they're worth more than 400 million dollars alone 400000400. It just goes to. Staggering.
And what what I don't understand is why they've never so I I don't get that why if they never surfaced. There's a lot of different resuming you don't know honestly are you have the the case salt -- what's the the what's -- the predominant theory. The predominant there -- be that perhaps they were stolen hidden in somebody's some home. Income. Perhaps that person that -- died in their family members bestow the -- perhaps is that Robert the naughty. -- who died a -- who died of natural causes when someone smashed and his skull about a year after the the robbery. -- yet he did he did he died in September of 91. But there's so many suspects who have met untimely. Jets perhaps. Funny how that goes right so what part people with the underworld. Yeah I guess its occupation pastor. Ten and type deaths but -- right someone who might have died and left them in in an area that maybe differently doesn't know they're in the basement are in the attic that's one plausible. Plausible theory or it could be that someone's holding them who has. The reason to be afraid to come forward not did not he has relatives so immediately I I assume that someone has talked for the relatives. Yeah I personally have in -- containment the twins. You know -- both twins they're both deceased right his brother Richard died 19870. Okay I'm sorry to -- well right but -- talked to family members and honestly there a wonderful family the nicest people you'll ever meet and they've been helpful but there's just no and I'm sure they could use five million bucks who couldn't. Who couldn't use it that's one of the great mysteries has sold so you figure that all the people who were there and in the league the guards have been interviewed and re interviewed correct time and time again. When I do I talk to still in about a weekly basis is very helpful but. Twenty years later it's tough to. Get useful information from someone who talked to thieves for about three minutes twenty years ago. Do we think these guys were Boston guys. My personal belief out a hunch or educated hunch is that yes there's no -- think they -- local moved the guard to that I speak to. Regularly told me that. They were local accents. There's this talk about one of the -- towards me which I think it's a red Herring missed from people on everything goes like he's from the UK -- yeah brilliant exactly -- New Zealand come. This is something that -- remembered a few days later. But I've played Boston actions for him and and they were local access the two guards were out of staters. I personally think they -- recognized something other than a Boston accent. There's no foreign -- about no Irish accent. Nothing it it it and is you know probably better than most how to. That -- there was there was they're the groups that where. Capable of doing this where many in Boston at the top right and there's no reason that we need to far right I think I passed by I've talked to people can you veto you said to me you know if you know somebody you know ask them and and and if I've talked woman that these guys were pretty high up from 4 o'clock to win. They they don't know and believe me they -- they too would. Easily go for a five million dollar -- to shore especially now the thing I don't understand why I don't understand we can't crack the case. I don't I do -- it -- how I don't have a classic and as an insult and stuff I. I guess in my own defense that they came into a fifteen. Some years after. But down. I think that you know you've probably read the newspaper that there's immunity on the table yup US attorney's office is incredibly helpful and dedicated to getting these bad right. The FBI the same thing and I guarantee anonymity and but we still I think a working hard to get people to trust the peace officer for real including our report. So to go to somebody and say we would give you immunity confidentiality. And -- billion dollars might sound too good to be true yeah and now.
What what idea -- was -- will be for a we went on the air at sixes I just I've just been through flooded basement I've seen that the image that water -- You know all you know like at twelve -- course of water to bill and I just think what I mean if this. You know there's been talk about the you know that maybe these things are stashed in some bar and somewhere in a rural knowing what. Whomever it's been a -- being in a barn for a year to would do damage would that I mean that now we're we're twenty years out.
It sure would I mean that does weigh on my mind I was just speaking to. The FBI's case agent about his own -- from problems and that very thing that come up but. I would say you know the worst damage would be fire of course -- But I'm really confident we have some of the best pennies conservatives in the world on staff at the garden museum. To be no shortage of other experts who wanna come and help and I know that. There reason to hide -- to -- just -- up there were cut they were cut out thereof frames please don't roll them up but there are two that were cut from their frames. But there's no evidence that they were for role that's a popular myth based and not in fact. The the two that were cut -- large. But there -- consistency of say -- a piece of corrugated cardboard. My feeling is that if you started to roll one -- quickly see it was a huge mistake. Secondly that we didn't find many paint chips that would indicate. How there was -- there was rolled right and we damaged when we talk a exact whom we talk what patients recover we're talking about. And very small particles almost like dust yeah so it doesn't seem to me -- world.
It how war I mean how good have policemen I mean do you think you've come close over you've been doing this for five years now do you did you did you come close. I think I sincerely believes that every day we are getting closer I really tailpipe look at it as. Tried to find in -- needle in haystack and when I've been trying to do is make the haystack smaller. Rather than typing in the needle. And -- such pretty small right now and I feel confident that we have a good idea that was a local group and that they're probably. Here. In New England they -- there's a lot of absolutely if you look at art theft throughout history at least the last century. Art that's stolen especially create -- doesn't get destroyed. 400 million dollars 500. Five okay 50500. Million dollars I mean it seems like what's that what's that though there's this -- novel was written a simple job or something like that again they. They steal two million bucks and the gang turns on itself course that's been -- that novels written over and over again. But I mean how can how it. You he got I think one of these guys is gonna say why don't we why don't we. Do something. Why why if if we do have immunity and we get five million bucks. Why president Lara. They're at their endless reasons why you picked you know of kind of conjecture as to why that might have tapper perhaps some of the opera split up. In some -- perhaps one person might have a couple of the paintings have -- if I come forward to collect the reward. Some dangerous people who might have the others will be very worried that I'm going to flip on them. That's why it's important that we get across to people that the report can be paid and a quiet and discreet manner. That cup filled -- to me and I'll make sure that you -- you can trust me I'm not likely others with hatch act. But I do know that that can happen I mean every continuing honesty always carbon credits for a a so so that's how a socially can get the -- so. But I mean if the money to the thing is though if if your in the gang and there's some bad guys in the gang that are still while being bad guys and suddenly to the paintings turn up it doesn't. It -- there's going to be a big press conference you know I mean they're gonna know they're gonna know who -- who turned a dead right. Right but conversely I would say that at the same time whoever might have the other pieces and that's assuming -- split up. But in that scenario. Personally see that we didn't. Released the name of the person who had them. That the payment went through and know almost prosecuted so I think that might be this publicity so what happens if you get to a home if you get back one of one of the really valuable once. Andy -- that these these -- looks like it's a bar ornament. It do you -- five million for that and then give five million for the next to go to -- doesn't know it the pieces of pro rated -- they are of value that we we colts close invest it wouldn't be smart to give it up to the public. So that they can all but we do have certain parts of that reward a lot -- for each piece. Okay but it all adds up to 5000005 -- and how many how many paintings other altogether there are six paintings five touring these anti. Female achievement -- ancient Chinese speaker. So there's stiffed like fifteen -- 5013 thirteen altogether us. Thirteen in the five that's like 400. Low blow under 400000 per piece -- that we ought to assume that there at the the one of the Rembrandt the this show is going to be a lot more than the others right it's not a mystery to think that a few -- in the army -- that you're partial or water probability be bigger than the fail. Yeah exactly okay. 187 if you any questions.
I Anthony Mori is here and he's the security director of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Edit and if people want want that to give you information confidentially or reach out to you when -- to do so mob negotiating or just to find out what the the the deal as well -- if you got a a phone number and email address.

That's some something that comes up very often check. That's the Hollywood scenario. Who literally what happened frankly in 1962. James Bond movie the James -- James Bond movie doctor now. While the move was being filmed aren't going is duke of Wellington was stolen. And the writers approach something it to the script where a doctor -- these James Bond into his dining room. And they walked by that painting. And sponsor is taken aback and says well that's without went and since then it's been called the doctor no -- but there's no basis. Offer that in history whatsoever. There's. No instance of some doctor no figure who commissions that thefts or he can join -- Thomas crown.
We we heard let me when that when the Japanese were going well in the seventies and -- stores lot of speculation whenever painting with despair that some billionaire in Japan has had stashed it in his basement right and that came up on synagogue or that someone had seen the storm in the Sea of Galilee independent Japanese so wealthy Japanese. Okay I've given name is.
Thank you Joe. Thanks I sure will win mentioning names I mean I've never put much credence in it but you know people keep trying to pull Whitey Bulger into the mix here and -- before me right and dom. Speaking for myself I've never seen one iota of credible information of any sort that ties. Them tennis you know probably better than most people in the world that that was earlier this thing. How much work man that was -- currently torn I'm like getting mean getting the uniforms themselves I would've been too much work those guys say they would they would shake down somebody who that the war. Wright was their job they're just they're thing there were people involved with them who would have had we -- farms unfortunately as we know what I'm. I speak in the Brian Kelly mentioned in the Boston Globe reported become. And I don't know anybody who can who knows the Flemmi Bulger angle better than Brian that it's unlikely. I mean just practically speaking the public should understand that. People associated with that group. Confessed to murders. In the dozens. But to not mention some painting seems. I can't imagine that they would need for paintings but they give up murderous that they committed. So I think it's unlikely. Right legacy it too they got burned in the sports betting to him they just that they were just in the in the taken money from other criminal -- on -- protection. Right that's what they did exactly. They booed again so much work finding offense you know find you know store stashing the stuff just. Way way too much chart chart maybe going to maybe try to find out who did it how do you believe that they still equivalent Barrett and and deposits -- yeah exactly. Yeah the yellow Yugo when you get to you find the people who were smart enough to do -- you steal everything baseball and you shaken down for -- but. Billy could shake these guys stuff tried believe would be the paintings because you can't move from their far too recognizable. And the values far too high to try to sell these guys screw up is that whatever we did they did they just wanna go went -- to take some -- innings they could unloaded -- they realized later on that they just did reached over reached that's a very strong -- I think down there is a precedent Massachusetts for stealing Rembrandts. -- A uniquely. Infamous history in terms of our past. That one of the -- did go to the dot Truman took three from France almost a fourth. Hmmm might have thought the premiere was a Rembrandt and I've said before it's entirely possible that -- woke up the next morning and saw the -- carpet. This this is the this is the biggest heist and in history. Yet -- this is too big refuses to get out of jail free card this is bigger than anything we've done before so that's a reason and not come forward twelve mile scar. Myles Connor is the president of rock and roll if you measure only us but yes. That's one of the most prolific are -- in American history. You can never ruled him out even though he was in prison at the time he certainly. Has that intellectual capacity to cope with such a good plan by dom I do believe that like many others have miles had access to them today. That he would have returned them. 187746943221. Was taken to a warehouse in to show something. That those by a Myles Connor associate correct -- well the story goes that that it had to do with our young works. We don't -- with which was one has us exactly gang right he was he's closely connected to miles at the time yeah or before then. And Tom was shown. What appeared to be a star Lucy -- out the it's hard to tell even to this day whether it indeed was that. He was later given come. Paint chips. As part of its investigation which were never dis proven. They were shown not to be. The Rembrandt paintings that was -- from him but again there -- it many paintings that stolen. So to those -- those are intriguing and words young work. He lives as I understand -- in Massachusetts. He sound -- from everything I've learned that a quiet life and Miller -- but do use five million bucks I I've set -- before I don't know a person who couldn't find a million bucks a but I nuclear control heart that's the mystery here you know we got that much money on the table. There -- 36 for mayors and echoing with how -- how we said earlier -- one came to Boston and we couldn't protect it. I mean the city the state it's kind of embarrassing so yeah there's 36 and once missing that's hours.
And done. It's I think that made like these these might have put themselves and kept playing even if they wanna destroy them who's gonna destroy that -- important hundreds of millions of dollars. You know made it seemed like they can't go on any direction.
But what's appointed destroy Obama do if they give their worth five million bucks. There's no point in destroying and there's every reason to come forward and collector reward.
