You -- you went to the White House yesterday and you got the the direct pitch from the up president of the United States what do we tell you.

Well you know he'd he'd laid out be the you know it it interest Paterno was very courteous and very generously this time in outlook at a enormous respect for the president he laid out his arguments. Now he's. Law professor around an attorney so. You know he has the mastery of -- factions that are very good job I thought. He laid out patrols and -- also laid out some of of bailing them that and the adequacy of the bill. And you know he basically said. The next in in the next here a couple of years will try to fix some of those. Those inadequacies that and the problems that I had raised with. And the problem is there's. You know I've got to vote on one bill at a time. And and I explained to the president that we had 290 bill right now sit and senate. They had not been taken out that we have already passed so I I optimism about what the Senate -- do was somewhat less the president.

Yes sir so -- your you're you're being told what to it to trust that. But you don't hear you are you are you gonna pay a price here in just you know from your own personal leadership position.

Probably. You know -- I don't know I don't know what you mean by price.

I mean you gonna be are you going to be Estrich what are you you're like an assistant whip or something right yeah right so I mean that's and that's it. You're pretty high up in there in the leadership but we could could they take that away from --

Yeah I suppose they could you know there might be if I've been a blast out well. But not -- looked. I think -- state. If things like that it would it would really undermine. -- he's at a party if they. There's a tough boat and and look the -- saying. He yet this built specs but it's the best we can get it would -- like this there. And a lot of people having trouble making a decision on whether support some not because. It's it's a pretty tough bill it's not anything that we supporters are close to what what the house it. And so. There. There's no one year -- great they'll.

But why why should you pass anything I mean what what's wrong with starting over again --

Well I don't pay -- still you know I look watch watch a lot of this is education on the issues figure out what what things cost. That's huge part of this so we have a lot of components out there. And you know we wouldn't have to do you know scrub -- also all of knowledge that we've gained here. And there are some points of of cohesion and an agreement with what the Republicans know.

Woolley hit The Wall Street Journal says the couple days ago that they they had like -- Nick Harper after staff to. Scott Brown's victory in the year in January they had they compress from a compromise just a talk a scaled down version. A that was good cover half as many people and more cost -- fourth as a fourth as much money. And it probably could pass with no problems -- we won't wasn't why didn't the leadership go go what that a white isn't someone go to the president just say lucky this is. This is too much for the American people.

Well you know both those are good questions and and I actually at the beginning it is old debate I had -- successfully but I did that that you know rather than change everybody's health Carol once why don't we work consulate and a broken. And try to do this in and chops and you are obviously that that argument -- not -- but I I think what's coming back to that.

What what is what is your prediction for what's gonna happen on Sunday you're is urging going to be a vote on Sunday.

Nobody we have. Most of the bill on our on line with -- two hours' notice so there will be right now is our purpose and it will be eight people on Sunday. You know I I think if folks but I think I think the proponents will succeed I think it will ask they'll.

And what what are you could tell you I believe you have play challenger coming at you in the democratic primary from the left and the you know he's you you know did the arguments. They're gonna make the -- What would be Howard how are you going to answer them that. You're you or you're at school of the greedy insurance companies he threw in what the Republican forty gonna say that.

Well it if you look at this bill -- it it it preserves. The antitrust exemption for the insurance so if if this look featuring current favorite is bill now. After they got rid of the public option insurance Rockport pharma is actually running at speed -- the pharmaceutical industry is running ads in favor of this bill. So you know anybody run -- direct title bunch of people running against -- probably having him more after the vote but. You know that that's that's the way it is but. My you know one of my essential problems here is they knew we were supposed to be doing reform and they have stripped out all the reform of this bill. And what we're doing really is is a great thing for insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies -- people from Nebraska. And you know they made a couple other states but. This is not. Gonna change the the problems that we have now we got into this whole debate because. We felt that you know we cannot continue to suspend all this money on on health insurance and -- getting these results. That we have bent but get this system maintains all that it actually institutionalized as a lot of -- Problems there's -- these sort of so the supremacy of the of the insurance companies and their positions. You watched you watch insurance company stocks one distinct passes. If they will skyrocket their profits will go up their share price will go up. And that they will be very happy. You know up our problem is I think with this bill is where where where and the ransom. But at the end of the data insurance companies still all the hostages this is not real reform.

It's gonna it's gonna cost so much -- annual meeting in -- don't we we can't afford -- end you know I know you're a lawyer to what I mean what did -- the north port perform the spell. I mean I know this is why don't tell me your your road against the but I'm just asking you this since I got you here.

Oh I think in Spanish you know I I think some of the malpractice costs are up probably overstated but some of the people -- on the other side but but by all means. The trial attorney should have been at the table. The pharmaceutical. Companies should have been at the table they have they have the highest driver of of health care costs. You know in in America and they would not at the table we negotiated this deal so so you make a fair point.

That's also by what the what the I'll believe in your district have been telling you when you go when you come back to Massachusetts.

Oh I did two -- three proficient would -- is probably met with. You know faced the space of about 15100 seniors. Yeah I would I would be yes. Not one. Not one senior. Out of all those practices and all polish luncheons not one senior asked me to support this bill and dozens. Quite forcefully. Each -- national demanded that. That I opposed this bill so they ask it to dickens' and some of it. Is warranted some of this is not in -- try to explain you know some of their -- away but you know. They are talking about. Substantial reductions they call -- waste fraud and abuse. And the in the Medicare system and trying to eliminate that to the tune of about. 500 billion. But it's tough to explain procedures. That they won't be damaged at.

We'll talk about cuts in Medicare Advantage right that's a -- yeah yeah yeah that's not waste fraud in the -- national matchup.

Big yet that's the big hit on in Massachusetts. We we now look we we are overpaying those programs and so there is some reduction that we can make but it will have impact that because. The Medicare Advantage programs have put out a lot of products. And services to the C news with that extra money and so if we're gonna what I do that and I've heard from. Folks that Ramos programs that they very. Concerned about this bill you know that's probably -- vote. The areas that has been seen as most upset so.

about that we're about the union -- urea former erupt president of the iron workers union trade union. It's they're they're not they're not too happy about this cattle I know they've changed I know trumka as went to the White House than you know got his arm twisted all about but. There's still led the rank and file still not too happy about this are the.

Well no. You know. That the unions have look these guys in my Brothers. And you know that that they their leadership is frustrated with you right now. -- that but they've been they've been very very respectful when they understand because -- you know six months ago they were asking me. Just sign a pledge that said they will not have their health can't help health plans taxed. And and I said absolutely you know I'm I'm I'm a police run -- I will not support that but now. The leadership from Washington has set to -- unions look we'll get just five years we'll give -- five year grace period before you taxed on it union health plans. I think that's a lousy deal or no response from Republicans. Have said that there all the -- we've -- honestly -- that's a lousy deal and and finally breathe it's not actually exactly exactly so they get five years and then -- now it's right on they had. And I I just don't think that what we we have another plan of the house bill always says look if you make a half a million bucks. You get haven healthcare surtax or reviewing your spouse make a million dollars he gave it gave their health care surtax. And you know I don't have a whole lot of people on my district that are in that category and even the ones that -- says look what -- a ton of money we should be able. Should be willing to pay a surcharge on the health.

But you -- like you say that not enough people like that I mean that's a that's a nice gesture to to to go after people who were making a million dollars is a couple but you -- EQ you can't balance a box with that that you have to go after your Brothers as you said.

Well what the plan they have now you know remember when we got into this we said you know -- people complain in the Philippines too much money flooding health plans so. What we've done is we've turned around and said okay. If you pay too much money for your health plan you're gonna pay the surcharge is sort of you know no good deed goes unpunished. Bid they're taxing the very people who were the chief. People complaining about it there's just so it little little bit dyslexic.

I don't know -- it's listen that we were all very happy that you're doing the right thing even if it even if the the bill prevails. Do you think they they can of the gonna hold this up the Senate's talking about these procedural votes and forcing -- back to the house and this sort of thing or is it isn't a fait accompli if it passes on Sunday.

Well I have a safe procedurally they they still haven't produced the rule under which this whole thing's gonna count so they're like three scenarios that. Workshops give me right now attempt to what might happen on Sunday. And two of them are very confusing what is obviously the bill comes on the floor and you both for a -- vote against it. And that's what I would prefer just to stand up and.

Wright yeah you've been talking about that this demon passes not -- is not like a very good idea.

And I think it hurts any. Shred of credibility that might be remaining. A congress but are people. And I and I think we need to just do something that they understand it and explain opposition. However they've got these two other configurations where they've got these procedural devices where they have what they call it self executing rule. And the bill will be inside the rule and then you'll vote on the rule and and by doing that it'll pass the bill without even -- okay -- the only problem is yeah article one section seven of the us constitution and and so since you know I I've been I've been out how to get around that because it says there's only one way to pass the bill. It you have. Each branch of the legislation the house and senate. Adopt that same point which and and not present and to the president and his signature it becomes law it's it's really -- And this would seem to stand up --
