I have to say the Democrats are in panic. They saw the Scott Brown election they are worried. And the hardy band of Republicans I think it's about fifteen in the house and now down to. Four in the Senate with Scott card although hopefully. Will win that's that the Republicans when I shouldn't say we the Republicans will win that special election. With Richard Ross who's a terrific state wrapped in now running for Scott seat. So. I thought it would be fun today to have the two. Mean legislative leaders in our state in the House of Representatives which is the biggest body that has a 160. Give or take a few members. The states and it only has forty. So in the next hour will have the speaker himself Bob to Leo. And in this hour we have is count took hard -- But god it's always challenging -- state representative and house minority leader Brad Jones Brett thanks a common man. My pleasure congratulations -- oh thanks so much for coming in. Now this is the time when the legislature really gets going but somebody told me the other days that. The speakers so war Reid and the Democrats are so worried. Right now they're only meeting one day a week.

Yet if you go back to last July there's no time since last night we met with -- Wendy week if we meet since last July must -- if you use this week when -- me off. Is that a vacation week. While my what I think what I always say is that I -- I know and next week is a evacuation when we this probably careful preparations underway for next week's holiday. Oh that's right you know what everybody's writing their jokes this week that's what it is you know the assault the breakfast and there's gonna be fun events all over the state Saint Patrick's Day and everything. So is that that's what everybody's doing their writing their jokes this week right. While some of them probably a lot more than a week to get their jokes written but yet a given the election year it's going to be anyone has some really good material for next week Sunday so what I'm understanding is that the democratic leadership in the house it's telling their members. Help there be out in your districts BC be like Scott Brown -- everything. -- you know with their if there are baking a cake at the bakery -- just just get out therein and make sure the voters are seeing interesting message to the messages basic.

The gloat and talk to people. Which I thought was sort of part and -- job in the first that's what you do we not just -- district by the way I have I North Reading reading Winfield and Middleton a price of three of those what -- all of north -- But amount about all time unity -- it's his name you know kids in the school. Ant or people just concerned about we -- had headed the state and -- a lot of more so than usual negative feedback about the governor in the legislature in and so the one party. An imbalance in Massachusetts. Yet the governor's poll numbers are tough in the legislature's poll numbers are really tough to this is going to be a tough year to run as an incumbent it is staff and you know I mean obviously like like a lot of things -- congress -- Washington that you know people. Dislike the institution but me like the room legislate -- movement is a lot more apprehension now in in as you mention this is the spring time well this is a time when nomination papers are available. So we're in the window wanted to kind of find out do you have an opponent. To have a good opponent to they have many opponents. And we also see a lot of upheaval you know number sykora to at least 21. Legislators and -- said they're not running for election immigrant for higher office in the history running for the exit. Decent the end I think you can see some more of those in the in the weeks ahead.

Will you on helped young can't you know for some folks want don't think about running for the legislature. A good place to do a good thing to do is call you up and going and see you -- and you for a cup of coffee take. He -- should I do it. Are there are a lot of new people running this year for the rehearsal there are lot of new people -- RD come forward -- she was -- election there was a whole group of people that I called the people that historically -- sat. In around -- yells at TV that finally gotten involved and so I'm gonna go write a check of difficult assignment go to rally. In in I think there's a lot of those people stepping forward. And hopefully in and amongst that group you can have some candidates that are you know very strong and maybe some that are willing to -- wanna talk what's issues. But this thing of finding to his or lot of cases step forward. That have businesses that sort of known in the community school committee selectmen or or previous electoral experience. Which is a help because putting your name on the Dow optically for the very very first time. Is a big step in if you've done -- at least once running for selectmen -- City Council something like that. Occasionally gear at least of understanding that when your out there is he should step out behind those -- it. And I think you can see a lot more people step forward and now obviously you have. Carson Delahunt stepped down in that kind of creates a whole set of movement on the deck chairs or people who logged in around the congressional seat when our run for the Senate seat while on the rapped a run for the Senate -- or whatever. So I think that's going to be you know that's gonna create 345 moves by the time all plays out -- in the tenth congressional district so these people.

What they're listening to laws that were saying. I've never run for office I never got involved and then I got involved in Scott Brown's election. And I'd never done that before I held signs and I'd make calls and first time ever right I wrote a check. And now maybe I can do it maybe I could do what Scott did in changed things in the company meet Brad Jones what do you tell well I.

Usually I say what the question is do you have what are the things that you wanna know about to schedule what you expect what's new Tuesday with -- expect. Okay I've decided to write what you do. You know a lot of it is depends on the -- campaign that person can mount I do talk candidates that they cannot expect. It's somewhere along the line. You know the debt issue that you're not too proud of the you've got trouble -- is gonna come up. That you don't want anybody to know about. Is gonna end up on the front page in the newspaper sued just you know that's gonna have that becomes more more -- you run for you know higher office and the stakes are higher. You know it's one thing if -- selectmen assume certain things maiming -- Mountain State rep as you move up that ladder. And you get into statewide offices you pretty much could be sure and meaning in everything tomorrow. I'll never forget with Mitt Romney when he was first running against Ted Kennedy and I met with them and that talk with them and he said. I -- my question has to do it the ways that districts are are lying in Beijing is my opinion that it used to be. When when there's always a boat of about 35 -- 65%. Of the people voting Republican yeah. No Republican governor except between you run so well. -- Legislation affected sustain his veto it is it is -- opinion of these districts gerrymandered in such a way. It's almost. And our sport it is a financial crisis. For Republicans have a shot.

In the congressional districts if you look at we what we get the census which -- you may have gotten something in the mail yesterday saying you know prevailing saying expect that we can gonna get -- form -- out and back. We'll get the total state they'll do what's called the apportionment how many congressman does Massachusetts get big debate is whether we're gonna be actually be able to keep ten it was gonna go down in nine. So that's assuming tomorrow with six million people you divide by ten seconds 600000 people from district. And using the federal stated we allowed no variation between districts will -- up child your and that's sad history fragile -- industry we don't respect precinct lines. What lines will divide -- per precinct to happen in time reading your present. And then they'll do it -- now if you look back in two in 2002 the last time we did it we presented a plan that met all the the standards. In a manner that was more acceptable to life we actually gone to court we have the resources is a party to go to court. Everybody expects we -- won the case but because we didn't they get to the district we have now which is you know kind of this wagon we a lot of boss senator. Right around the suburbs of Boston where you know Barney Frank will. -- down to you know New Bedford area have you know constant balance of -- and while -- province -- the right next to him is Congressman Lynch you know -- you know Larry -- in Quincy you know right -- while no. You know -- all of morally within. -- geographic area -- to congressman -- he kind of runs across the southern border of the state you know he you know bordering I think New York Connecticut. Rhode Island it's quite incredible and it's going to be an opportunity. How to change that one of the things that we proposed. During the rules last years to do just what we call independent commission. You know in an an Indy can -- gonna keep politics out of it because we -- doing the numbers were beast that is going to be some decisions made he district's roughly the same size. For state senate Statehouse district we allow 5% variation and we should respect precinct line so we never divided -- my precinct lines right and that's probably good thing. And you know. But overall is there any impact people can have on what I did I should they be an issue -- elect I think it should be an issue we -- we've proposed you changing a constitution -- proposed rules to do an independent commission basically let people look at the numbers. And what makes sense in it to make a proposal and we have an up or down vote that's a -- down not my little friend healer and -- like it relatives over here we'll give me this a trade that QB that. I'm it would be much better way doing it would be much more like how many of the states to have they ever let the Republicans get in the -- I mean the -- the Democrats live for redistricting that's that's what they do that -- let's -- just nationalities you know you've been around a long time you program and it was sort of you know the back of envelope and almost a crayons that people who. When he missed the big vote brightness -- he's I think they vote -- Chrysler is really remember he had on the pro life he M. But his base and know that some of them the moved -- this -- that really supports him. Doesn't like the gambling thinks he's -- antagonizing his base and he really needs in the three race he's been very. So it's happened in how we approach gambling so was -- and I still support it. But I'm not gonna really do anything with so is -- antagonize him too much because of his calculations three way race so. You know it's gonna be at -- in the Senate president has been a little more standoffish -- open to a but I I don't know if it is so I don't know that it's gonna be something happens I think gonna debate house. But again you know speaker can -- with the sort of the outlines a plan. You know cities and towns for the people physically for the district -- present -- towns with the most of services that's for the rubber meets the road that's waving -- people feel the most. -- involved and how they dollars and spent feel like they can see how that dollars giving spent. You feel like a local level meeting -- more inclined to get a dollar. Services for dollar of revenues as opposed to about 10% of the federal government trickles back down you feel like I -- my pocket again about what sent back. While I'm gonna have to do I'm I think there are they gonna have to be there are some huge. Variables well first of all. You know we're gonna have a budget to stop bounced a virtual we have structural office. Loom so we're we're we're not taking in enough money on which recurring basis to cover property -- using a lot of in one timers bright one of the largest one is the governor is gonna think it's six -- seven million dollars and -- he gets Medicaid money it's gonna come from the federal government move the governor filed a budget January. We're planning on or planning on on the hour and a march and that is any close happenings that if that doesn't happen his budget has a 600 million dollar hole -- it right before anything else happens. That's a concern you know he's got a tax increase and you know he wants that you know again -- nickel and dime to nickel and -- the finals at the registry if you wanna talk to anybody. What we wanna change we want attacks key -- so. You know we're going to get it for alcohol we are increased meals tax we are already increased sales tax.

I we we all know that the governor's budgets don't mean anything I I remember being up there -- With bill weld that Mitt Romney and in January you have no idea of what things are gonna be like in June and I I remember telling someone one time. We -- to just put out. One copy of the budget save some trees. Put zero and every call him. And then work with the legislature I think that quote sorts of -- orders we have to -- my priority I have the governor of this of the same -- you know he's the he's the -- He's the lead guy and Democrat ticket that's violent Democrats are wringing hands as they say you know. Two years ago is popular areas up Hideo wanted him to come at a fund raiser for local office now it's like you know so like pushed it to be. To a fund raiser for me at the airport hangar no press nobody sees you there. I don't -- picture we've yet if somebody she's here you see camera jump by the way. -- because they don't -- picture taken with the governor. And and I think that. You know right now I think there's almost a desire for Democrats -- trying to prop him up. Because he's the anchor. And they're tied to his that the rope on an Acre and they worried there ought to be going now. Well that's tough when the top of the ticket -- down I'll never will you remember so well in -- been there done that what was it 9996. Bob Dole at the top of the ticket. That could've been a breakthrough year for -- the Republican Party yet. Bill weld against Kerry you would pollute the you would chains with running out there -- to -- than. Howard Dean was going to be the democratic nominee until. Oh six's you know the Republicans quite frankly screwed up in Washington -- governor ethically sitting governor responsibly terms of finances -- bigger. So the core beliefs of the party we're gonna cast aside in and we paid a price the Iraq War I mean you had people saying mama all I'm concerned about the Iraq War. We don't have saved the state -- level on the Iraq War we can send a letter we can't really do much more than the average citizen and you. They'll then -- it was all about you know change change change change. And you know -- Are you going to be anybody if if the argument you made in 04. 06. Or -- about balance. Change. One party government doesn't work. If those of the reasons you voted in this election you need to give every Republican candidate serious hard luck and I would say even sort of a going with a biased you gonna vote for them. Because all of those reasons you voted maybe Democrat in those three years.
