What was Your Reaction to Presiden't Obama's Speech in Arizona

When President Obama took the podium at Wednesday night's memorial service in Tucson, Ariz., he was greeted with the unbridled excitement of a college campus embracing their commander in chief. Cheers and screams and hoots continued even after he asked for people to sit down. As he started his eulogy, with the somber words, "To the families of those we've lost," voices still cheered and at least three people shouted out, "We love you!" It was not the way most memorial services usually kick off. What did you think of the audience reaction to Obama's speech last night?

Who should be responsible for Clearing Snow from Sidewalks?
Audio
Wed, 12 Jan 2011
A recent ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court makes it easier for people injured on snow covered walkways to successfully sue those property owners who don’t clear snow from walking surfaces. Winter is here and so are slippery sidewalks, parking lots and walkways. Previously, Massachusetts courts have ruled that a property owner cannot be held liable if someone is injured walking on new or what courts have called “natural” snow. Instead, owners can be held liable if someone walks over the natural snow and then another person falls down while walking on the same area of snow, called “unnatural” snow by the courts.

We're back on the Charlie Manning show on WRKO. 2666868. The number. It's been a fun first date this is the first day of the Charlie Manning show. It's great talking to you I appreciate all the kind words from our callers that seem to be enjoying the show and we love to take callers and I think this is gonna be one of the best things about. This show from twelve to three before how we comes on and take -- home three to seven. That we'll be all the talk about local things that we care about. And also that will be able to take calls from you because we wanna hear what you have to say. And I think I wanna change gears here a little bit from politics we -- Scott Brown on in the first hour. Deval Patrick on in the second hour in it was interesting to talk to -- the van and hear what you have to say about them. But. Do you spend some amazing reporting over the last couple days about nursing homes in Massachusetts. You may have seen The Herald began with a series. On Sunday. Shaft in our seniors and it typical with The Herald. It was some good tough reporting. The Boston Sunday herald reported yesterday that nearly 40%. Of the State's nursing homes. Perform significantly. Below average according to annual inspections. And they said that the base State's nursing home population. Is about 45000. The Herald followed up with another terrific story today.
How.
People sign away the rights to sue when they're being put into nursing homes and then the globe. Following up on The Herald has a story front page lead story today nursing home drug use puts many at risk. Nearly 21 500 nursing home residents in Massachusetts. Were given how waffled drugs last year that were not intended or recommended for their medical condition. A practice that is more common here than in most other states. So here we have a situation where the nursing homes 40% of them. Are below. What they should be when their when their being reviewed when they're being studied. And now a federal government report says that they're giving drugs to our seniors that are in the -- nursing homes. And I'd like to hear from you. 2666868. The number 6172666868. Have you had to put your Marmol.
Or your dad or.
A relative into one of these nursing homes. House -- worked out the use do you feel like they're getting good care. The amazing thing is world going to be if Milwaukee and we last awhile may be heading to nursing homes are cell Sunday. And it's something that I think we really have to pay attention to. When you have our parents our uncles or aunts are neighbors that have done so much for our country. And now there in the -- there elderly years. And here -- so there in a nursing home. And 40%. Of the State's nursing homes performed significantly. Below average. Shouldn't this be a place that I'm not for big government but. Shouldn't this be a place where government should be stepping in. Seems to me it makes sense I wanna hear about how things have gone for you and your family in nursing homes if you work at a nursing home. What do you think did you used to work there and you didn't like kitten you saw things that you wished you hadn't. Give us a call 6172666868. Ross in Boston your first this --
Manning WR TLA Los Alia a good luck and I hope this works for you that you walk. But press -- Charlie I yeah I fortunately I haven't -- it firsthand but my own my own family because you know we took care of our own men in all my. And might well -- on the light side and -- side we we took care -- parents and they died at home of what so we would put them and and respect and we made every effort that that not happen. But by eight visiting other people in nursing homes. First of all there's no question that it's a lot easier to drug of people. And let them rest and sleep and be quiet that it is to give them caught the attention. So there's no question that you know of these nursing homes are guilty of that it's very easy thing to do. You know give him asleep and -- immensely and let -- and their quiet.
Well the I guess I can sort of understand that because probably in a lot of cases they're trying to state money they're understaffed. But boy you heat -- that your mom or your dad might be treated that way or your uncle or your -- that's not a Good --
This -- that's why would I don't Stanley we took care of our own. And medical you know some of my extended if we also not myself but other members of -- and that -- only. You know with people look we we try to take care of our own. And we understand that the only way they're gonna get the best the care is if you take hero not the and someone else that they care.
But isn't a little scary Ross that may be down maligned for who knows what circumstances could happen it. You or -- may end up in a nursing home -- sub standard nursing home where they are wanting us to keep this quiet.
Let me speak for myself first of all I carry long term care insurance. And I have an excellent policy that I can -- stay at -- Mike Ambien and nursing home. And get exit on the -- spread day to take care my -- care so I'm not concerned for myself.
Well that's good to hear Ross thanks for the call and that's great that you were able to take -- your parents fortunately my family were able to do the same thing and they. Didn't end up in nursing homes that I remember visiting one of my uncles one time and it wasn't a great scene I'll tell -- at 2666868. The number. We're talking about the major exposes in the newspapers. Over the last couple of days The -- started it on Sunday with -- Major Ceres about the conditions of nursing homes. 40%. Of the State's nursing homes The Herald reported. Are performing significantly. Significantly. Below average and then the globe today with a study that says that. So that seniors are being. Drugs in nursing homes that shouldn't be drugged in nursing homes and you know you wanna take here -- the folks is as they get older and you just wonder about the whole nursing home situation at. Folks like Ross a smart to be looking out for their own futures with extended.
Cared to on the line. But you wonder what the government's gonna do about that 2666860. -- number let's go to David in Watertown new next with Charlie Manning on WRK.
I have a slightly different perspective my late wife passed where he has several years ago she was a nurse who worked nursing homes yes. She told me of a number of things so over the course of her working life. One of which was that. A number of the nursing homes which you know when she. Has to apply for jobs when choosing between jobs that you could walk into -- common -- nationally Erin. That's a bad things whereas some nursing homes. But. At the same time she also told me that. A significant percentage of being -- yes. A key aides who was responsible for making bandits and during other you know lower skilled work. -- And sometimes they would even -- a rude manner -- to speak to each other in creole French. In a patient's room.
If so and so they couldn't be understood what they were saying in the patient's room.
Right. The patient would have no idea what they were talking about and that was his -- he lives there. He actually lived in that room.
And paying a lot of money to be living in that room.
That's right. So it was it was at the very least rude manners for our for the station employees. To be talking to each other assets inpatient or keep -- in the room.
So would you I imagine your wife after working in nursing homes all those years. Could walk in somewhere and realize this is in a place where I wanna -- I don't wanna work at this standard.
That's right -- she taught me that when she whatever she had to. You know when you when she was -- one place and that applies someplace else. Substantial economic reasons because nursing home close to. You know she she. Sometimes are people. In -- diapers changed every day.
Gosh yeah yeah. You know what if your parents or you're on uncle your relatives are -- there. You've got to beat their almost all the time watching in making sure they get the good here don't you. Well it's really tough to 666860. -- number we're talking about the herald Ceres shaft being our seniors about nursing homes and of course the front page story in the glut in the globe today that. Nursing home drug use is putting many seniors at risk 2666860. -- number give us a call on the Charlie Manning show. Charlie in Braintree you're next on the Charlie Manning --
Just Charlie in Braintree. Only breach for you rob gets nervous -- but it's very close by aren't my mom passed away about five years ago.
But I want to -- she had been most excellent care at a national golf -- and lost there's no it may.
You know I don't want people saying the names of nursing homes if our had a problem or are good but I appreciate that you know here's the situation where. Somebody had a good experience did you do a lot of investigation. Beforehand.
I'd give I'd like to at least wanna get thirty nursing homes and I found the conditions of a majority of them. 75% of them. Would have been go to the other gentlemen referred to -- war. And it's very prevalent just -- is incumbent on you gotta know what it -- nursing home is and its people.
You know the family should check come out and.
Just go there -- you look at what's going on my mom who really -- being an interesting I'll mention it for eleven years.
And did she make a lot of nice friends there. That's great you know we have great it makes you feel so good to know that they're getting your your parents are getting good care. That someone's out watching over them when you can't be there and they don't throw win the fun of making good friends that's can't beat that can.
Caregivers world resilience as a best people saw the work of -- pretty. People who are --
Well there's that there's some good news thanks Charlie 22666868. The phone number here on WRKO your listeners Charlie Manning show. We're talking about the major exposes and both of the Boston papers the globe in The Herald about nursing homes -- wanna hear about your experiences Charlie from Braintree. Found a great place for his mom where she was happy but. We're hearing some real horror stories to John in the car your next on WRK with Charlie Manning.
My father I went and has been -- and then I know that earlier Hewitt suggested that that they needed government help and personally at least that the watching. Well I bet -- I think. What the problem is that the government is the overall probably heavier provider. Funding for the you -- on Medicaid Medicare drug Vytorin as a result what I found is. I didn't feel like I was. -- have been nursing home -- from my father. Really more a threat that it in. Making sure they didn't violate the Medicare and Medicaid protocols but for example that he had a stroke on it on the Internet I don't expect. Provide besides do something like that they wouldn't allow it simply because they were worried that it would violate their their street -- come from the federal government. So I I actually think that the that and so we get some sort of private insurance or some sort of process and -- where people are. Saying -- Eric a lot more choice about well. Which all speaking go to that it does not gonna get better.
Well that's this report in the globe today it's on the front page said that its data collected by the federal -- Medicare and Medicaid Services. It shows that 28%. Of Massachusetts nursing home residents. Were given these powerful drugs. In of that group 22%. Did not have a medical condition. That called for such treatment. So as one of our early caller said. You know win these places -- understaffed when they can't look after the folks the way they should they're just -- them up and this report from the government shows that. I think it would be great you. If for instance Massachusetts. Is looking into the the condition and in the way that nursing homes work. As The Herald reported yesterday said that nearly 40% of the State's nursing homes. Perform significantly. Below average. Public to see a list of that on a state website if you're looking for something that for -- place for your parents or your uncle or your -- are. What is your neighbors that you helped look after. There ought to be some type of clearing house she can go and look up a bunch of nursing homes in your area -- obviously you wanna close TC can be there and visit and spend time. But you wanna be able to -- there and you want nursing homes that. May be -- at least are above standard would make sense to me. Thanks of the call 2666868. Let's grab one more Gary from April you're next on the Charlie Manning show on WR TL hey Gary.
I Charlie Ohio. The have you good to have you went down.
Q you know I think it's gonna be great to have this local type of talk radio course. Mark guys in the morning here at W marquis or riff fix the right on the story at the beginning of the day. And you know Howie Carr is a hall of Famer you know so I told him and I told someone the other day that. It's pretty nice to -- front of the hall of Famer and so now they have this twelve to three during the day be local I think he's gonna be terrific as we get into issues like this.
Absolutely and this is important that the reason why I called. My most valuable possession is that a nursing facility which is my life for the last three now forty years local. What you have to be so full active when I heard these things. That. It smelled like -- and they -- people I mean I I would really like to seek out somewhere. And some kind of ballistic however. If you are actively involved in the individual. That you have. Indeed nursing facility. Nothing is gonna get by absolutely nothing I'm there all the time. I became so involved. I became an ombudsman for the state. Do you join -- family council and if you have a facility. That. Is willing to work we deal and they know they children all actively. That's lot of there's not a better place for them today. And I'm like herself from cable. And we have a number of facilities. And I didn't want right now that I am so lucky that I have the opportunity. To find a place like this because of the eight. More so than the nursing the top -- which is the welfare. But the people that are really should be recognized the CNA. That no you off fairly -- better than anybody. Because there will they know all the -- and there are -- So I'm a little. Confused with a guy that said that they tore them up you know all I'm -- All state later in the evening when you see things happening and nothing nothing. As far as I'm concerned it's gonna convince me that there are places out there that do all the time.
it's so great that you've had a good experience and you feel that your. Wonderful wife is pretty good care and that is absolutely terrific but you're being proactive in Europe there. You'll have to think about think of -- senior who Stanley is all moved away you know they had to move away for jobs for family reasons whatever. And there they are god themselves almost in one of these nursing homes are.
That why you're a pro active. You have to be proactive. And do what you have to do my thing I've got a lot of money but the point they're. If you can't remember a big you have to stop and look around in -- As he what they have -- social services in what they have four. Our entertainment. Our act that again and again you never go you'd never pulled the pivotal place. Very early in the morning very early at an evening.
So that's a good Gary thanks so much recall that's a good tip that Gary's giving -- his. Go check it out spend some time -- before you put a loved one there check it out see what it's like in the morning see what it's like in the evening. Talk to the folks who have loved ones there. That's probably what you have to do. But it's -- too bad too because a lot of seniors don't have someone like Gary looking out after a 6172666868. This is the Charlie Manning show were talking about these knee jerk. Stories in the Boston papers shifting our seniors that at least a two part series here in the Boston Herald. And today the globe as the front page story nursing home drug use puts many at risk. It's a tough story we wanna hear from you 2666868. On WRKO.
You'll walked in -- Charlie Manning and coming out of three units Howie -- on Boston's starters are made M sixty. W walker you. -- millions. Experienced -- memorandum on Boston's talks resume and AM. No you're doomed.
Like any show on WRK. 2666868. The number 2666868. We're looking forward to having give us -- call it's then fun first day so far this the first day of the Charlie Manning show. And we had -- Scott Brown in the first -- Governor Deval Patrick in the second hour. In this hour I thought we'd look at -- local issue that's really circulated up over the last couple days. Both of the Boston newspapers are all over it and it's the care of our seniors in nursing homes. What is that -- like well the Boston herald's running -- series calling shaft in our seniors in The Herald reporting that. 40%. Of the State's nursing homes performed significantly. Below average according to annual inspections. And -- numerous residents suffer abuse and neglect or -- shoddy care. That's what The Herald reporting in the typical -- way lot of into resting reporting. And and the globe front page story above the fold today nearly two.
Thousand nursing home residents in Massachusetts. Were given powerful drugs last year that were not intended or recommended for their medical condition. A practice that is more common here than in other states. The use of such drugs is especially worrisome in nursing homes. Because a substantial number of residents suffer from dementia. The condition that puts the -- raider risk.
When given these type of drugs. It's tough. A lot of you out there of had to make that tough decision of whether you're gonna put mom or dad program are -- are. Or one of your uncles finance or maybe one of your neighbors and a nursing home. And -- been asking some of the callers what's it like out there fortunately in my family. We didn't have to do it -- feel really relieved to this day that we didn't have to put either my momma my dad or my wife's mom and dad and in nursing homes they were able to kick could care until the end and but a lot of people are in there's a lot of problems we were taking calls in the early hour from folks who it. Seen some really bad things that nursing homes and others who had had good experiences. So we wanna hear from you. 2666868. The number Trish in when you're next on the Charlie Manning show on WRKO.
And he's doing Charlie -- the traditional. I heard gear up Ramallah on RD Friday.
Sounds like it's gonna -- that could choke.
Banks you know I think the good thing is we can we can cover the national issues when their big. But we don't have to talk about national health care every day right when nothing's happening. When it gets caught I'll tell you will be all over -- But when you see both of the newspapers have front page stories about care in nursing homes I think we wanna talk about that.
And I had not my parents. I thought it was announced car crash and through no fault of -- now. And exposed to an injury. And I had to fight to get him all my -- calls for eight or nine years. And I was working we are both only children and my parents could really only Staley and the night. And the care I -- even now I have across. Their care that you get them home health care is not always. Top of -- line. And I -- after or whatever in nine years I had to put him in nursing home. And I wanted it to be local because I work you know I was on like 45 minutes striving and -- actually -- so long. And -- it was it was a nightmare and he couldn't talk walk you know it just. He couldn't tell you what was going on.
He couldn't look after himself at all.
And I go up and if I missed a couple of days he'd be I mean parity. And I complain about it they know they kind of each hour that we stay. And you know the latter claim the word and you know allow Americans playing the -- I've found bruises on his leg. He couldn't how many how they got their one day I went into surprise visit and they helped me accurately I just went right up.
Sure more right into his room.
Right and they held me back and I got -- his hair was wet. And I and let -- this from Dana. She is only just stayed in the shallow. Well compliance -- you can towel at him as someone at -- shower and not. Anyway it would it would drag a line. I print finally have based in Beverly that it is made -- I mean it was much much that I mean implicitly it looked like a beautiful place. You know they treated him wonderfully. You know put it you know it was such a long all of you know North Reading about about all Linux yeah.
I was on the road I would better or more than I was at home. But.
And when you're working full time and then taking care of your son at home don't really have the opportunity to go up and do. The type of investigation. That you'd want to do about any specific nursing home. If the state put that type of information like The Herald reporting in the glows and putting on line do you think that would have helped to.
I think it would have made an enormous difference. In the ways they dare run even if it was reporting I think the ways both facilities Iran would improve I. -- 30% which is better than nothing. You know.
That's the shore well -- you're you're a good mom looking after your son like that banks are calling it thinks are listening on the first day of the -- Manning -- really appreciate it. Thank you by 6172666868. The number let's go to. Jerry in with the when you're next on the Charlie Manning show.
Shelly ally it I'm doing all right Gerri I don't group a beautiful day out if you know -- Reynard my wife. You don't. Don't put -- in the nursing home on the news that shell may well well yeah I had no right although that at some other was gonna. Terrible thing. So -- and a well.
We went there is not that we could we complain we met with the administration each get a transparent. If you despite pulling eight the other -- net you -- they've added later acted up we get to -- mapping you can coach not a very good care. -- I am not or bad. All on. Are out of their champ -- The response time which -- they have like a little button and eat out was extremely slow so I I still watch. These young -- and -- hiring. That justice job you know that'd be a problem let it get educated and be real low.
I used to watch them feeding these people -- beat themselves.
And I was amazed because they would take -- won't -- of food that was.
He'd -- poll that just barely evident that amount and it sent to.

Gosh that's unbelievable. Sorry to finally move over to another place. It's. Well I would try she was what do you she had you to look out after that's for sure --
At the tournament there's it would two really good. Nursing homes they can't name them in in my area that we tried to get Iran to. But they they can manipulate valuation is said no we cannot answer. So. One money she has that's -- addition issued it'll have to 91 she had that she had a good life.

Well you know that so called Jerry I appreciate it Charlie Manning on the Charlie Manning showed 2666868. We're talking about the Boston Herald and Boston Globe stories on nursing homes. Seems to me I don't wanna mention any names but I've seen a lot of the being rich Democrat fundraisers who are known as. The nursing home -- and magnets and they live in big man chains and one of them I think wanted to build to hear route into his pride that delay can there was. Some thing wrong with -- environmentally. But they just did it anyway so. Seems like somebody's getting rich on this and it's not the folks who are getting the -- care that's for sure. 2666868. We went in every single day defeat them to take care of their children retract that day just to make sure it was eight era. And they didn't want to hear any of the play anymore and they relegated. It is a lot base.
Now what relation was the patient you. And they told you couldn't see year parent in their room.
not only in the room and -- failed rapidly after the bat because we did most it is there. And after that went down you know it wasn't eating you lost a lot of weight I had originally. I was. And that annoying but I I really couldn't because there's no way that you can fight this type of thing. I don't know what to this day and the state is the administrator. And say yeah.
Sports is not always the way.
If there was not that connection so I don't know let's recall what people have with these the it was Biden and because we did have account though. That met you know if you have a group I -- that the only ways to band together. As a group. And hair and that are you know where the yeah.
