Avi on Reconciliation
Thu, 4 Mar 2010|
The White House cranked up its push for a quick healthcare vote in the U.S. Congress on Thursday, criticizing rising health insurance premiums at a meeting with top industry executives and wooing lawmakers. Obama and congressional Democrats are rallying for a last make-or-break attempt, and House Democrats hope approve the Senate-passed bill within the next few weeks. Can it be stopped?

Good afternoon everybody this is on the Nelson and rally cause this afternoon and you heard met the man I sure in the bush -- before. He's going to be here with a -- 5 o'clock live in studio we into space should be on the chance. To ask questions of a man who might be the next president of the United States and maybe sooner than some people on the their -- democratic shiny now. Would be comfortable with. Until that time though we have lots of things to talk about it and we hope you'll join with a -- conversation. We're gonna lead off with health care -- know we talked about the -- the boy is still hot topic affects all of us so we will discuss that but first. Measures are want on this station we have a poll question so we turned to sandy for advice and counsel. There's two what is the poll question and how we doing in terms of the body.
response well you can take the poll question how Ricard dot com we also see today's headlines are video of the day and look at pertinent news stories which are linked to our website but the poll question is should you be able to sell your own organs.
So let me turn off my yes in the media this this one his left -- is throwing it right on me. This came my way because there was a story. That -- found actually about. Leaking of your body. We're talking about no other aspects of health and total lack thereof. In the healthcare reform proposal the battles -- and for the and talk a little bit about that throw the phone lines are open to you. The phone number for participation it's 8774694322. The email address is a Nelson at wrko.com. And as I. Say I read all emails try to get some on the air. As many as we can I don't respond to the emails all of my do respond to some I didn't do my best but they are all appreciated. And there's a -- blind. And one of the one other thing I would point out. Then in this modern technological age even if you are now within their signal. Of WRKO you can listen by streaming -- the course was to weather stations on on on the syndicated network here. People who are not listened to signal for one reason or other not a radio you go to RK OW RKO dot com. And just follow the instructions to -- life. Okay where we stand in terms. Health care reform well. Gets curiouser and curiouser -- some in some respects. An interesting piece in the Washington polish were talked about. Obama calls for reconciliation. To prevent -- filibuster on healthcare reform. Let's -- outline of the peace. -- goes on and talks about reconciliation. To the -- who work is that. The house would have to pass legislation. There was a crew approved by the Senate couldn't change a word they have to prove that. Then comes back to the Senate. And that's where the -- is coming it sure when you hear that Obama said he's gonna take some of the Republican ideas etc. He's going to incorporate them second time through. That means little people who -- close have to trust everybody in the Senate that there really going to fix it in quotes since who have lot of people in the house. Democrats as well as Republicans don't like the bill as it is. Well if you trust the politicians to do what they -- perhaps. Perhaps you're just a Pollyanna perhaps you have a more optimistic view on for the world than some of us -- it seems to me that takes a big gamble. But in addition of that alone Judy you know who they're talking about about the bipartisan. Effort here. Launcher near what some of the people. Had to say representative Chris now Holland he's a Democrat from Maryland. A member of the house leadership. Now recently you may or call senator Jim Bunning was a Republican. -- launches -- filibuster because he didn't think that the new. Bill to extend unemployment benefits that was going to cost ten billion dollars was being paid for. And the Senate just passed what to call pay go which means pay as you go so Bunning objective on those grounds. Here's what from them Holland said. He called it. Part of quote a calculated and cynical strategy. By the GOP to bring the work of the American people to a halt and quote. Not talk about cynical. He's got to know that wasn't what money which trying to get across Bunning should show any number of times but he deliberately distort since. Here's senator Ben Carden Democrat Maryland. He should the Republicans. Are really trying to block healthcare legislation not to improve his quote quote it's not that they want us to start over they do not want -- bill. Unquote. Well look this is patently false. As a matter of fact in in another article you can find that the Democrats ought to take a look at. And that is that the Republican proposal for example for tort reform. Is estimated to shape between 92. And 207 billion dollars per year. Which is from the American Medical Association and and others who have taken a look at it. The the point is that. That there are. Real savings to be had here any genuine opportunity to do better with health care reform -- should be patently untrue. This say they're Republicans don't want any reform anybody who looked at that that. Any portion of that seven hour summit meeting would understand the actual case that can be genuine disagreements. But how -- you which -- get reconciliation. In the true sense of the term. If people on the other side are just going to name call and distort. And make it sound like the opposition is vacant or cynical war. Interest paid in somehow denigrating the American people in the health care system if she's not gonna go anywhere. So you have a problem here. The problem of philosophy there's also what I'll -- process. And then of course has turned a lot of people off we heard about the Louisiana purchase money to Louisiana. To buy Merrill Andrews felt. Then there was the Nebraska. Arrangement. Called the cornhuskers kick back. Senator Ben Nelson no relation his vote was bought because they were -- Nebraska. From Medicaid payments while -- that's gonna be expanded everywhere and so on down the line they were buying votes. Now what do we have. Well coming up. We have that the president is going to host. They get together top ten Democrats from my house who voted against the health care bill in November. And he's obviously trying to persuade them to switch their votes. One of the -- Is representative Jim Matheson a Utah. Now -- I'm sure it's collection little. But his brother Scott Matheson. Is just about to be appointed in fact he has been appointed by the president. George George -- President Obama today nominated. Scott Matheson. To the United States court of appeals for the tenth circuit that's a very prestigious. Court of Appeals -- a regular judge that's -- let's say an appeals court judge which is higher. I'm not -- sure he indeed. Has good credentials. He's got a bachelor's degree from Stanford masters from Oxford. Got his law degree from Yale Law School in 99 but he's never been a judge. And it is interesting is that the here all of a sudden boost on Madison's going to be now is nominated he's gonna be a judge and his brother. He's about to go. To the White House. To be courted by the president. I must be just cynical that it just must be coincidence I'm sure there's nothing behind it right. You know you could get away with something like this and say awe -- we know just one of those things if there hadn't been a whole bunch of bribery. And pay -- already along the way. So we've got two things we've got philosophy and we have processed. And in both cases the American people are being asked to swallow very hard. Except bill which the Democrats claim is not going to cost any more but the rest of us don't believe that. And they want us to accept that these people are voting in good conscience -- to my house and the Senate and yet we see all these. Deals that I guess you're technically illegal but certainly do not falsely. Ordinary test of standards and if you did them in the private sector you'd end up in jail.
All right your thoughts are welcome health care reform as it stands now in the country and invite your participation -- 77469. 4322. Is the phone number. -- Nelson at wrko.com. His email address showing your first Shockey -- the icebreaker chuck good afternoon.

No after -- you really be that broke out a couple of ports I have that they opt -- can't be about Barack call Barbara. There are strong all its way are each edition dole spoke at -- the -- support for help that you pathology -- great.
All right thanks for calling -- little bit of that China -- there and that like it it's true that. That the president's cholesterol is too my and it's truly smokes but you can't say here that he's -- Cheney thank you looked like he's in pretty good shape. -- OK we all fall a little bit short but that's different from the question about the health care reform bill. -- I will say this though in addition to asking the question do you believe that this judgeship. Bush just. Now our regular appointment or nomination done on the merits. What do you think that that there's some hanky -- going on in addition to that let me ask a more fundamental question. Do you think. That the government to the United States should force you as a should listen to buy something as a condition. Of your being a citizen of this country. To the best of my knowledge it has never been done before. -- of people mentioned car insurance yes it is mandatory. But that's if you have a car you're not required to have a car and a lot of people don't. But here everybody is going to be required to buy health insurance. And I find myself wondering whether this is an appropriate function of government. Or whether it's unconstitutional. Deflationary you can be sure their -- going to be challenges if the mandatory program goes through. Your thoughts are welcome. It's 774694322. Do we take a break -- syllable lines -- they -- the lines -- you're next on the program.
By an affront to. These judgeships they're -- at all by the wayside because we're also clustered on this this president's so fixated on health care I've never seen Amanda. So obsessed with. For the last year we've been trying to tell him. I'm in Chinatown I think a lot of people. The situation is it's -- how well we don't want this but this guy is -- I don't help wherever that's senator or that won't shatter that one. You know also representative by representative is to. Votes you actually get this through on reconciliation. Comment I I don't give up I'm really excited I was really I guess I have a feeling I know I tried a doctor good. Yeah I don't I don't I have a feeling it's knocking out.
Really liked the question is whether there are enough congressmen who have relatives who can get high appointments that.
You've got to achieve a deal. Bad position so they played budget yeah I'd rather try a little problem I was on the line sucks -- convoluted by the judge at the point about your best bet that it's also had done. I even makes a difference even them along by no means let -- he's going to be there forever in out.
He's gonna be there forever and and the anomaly that -- This thing just looks awful the -- may be qualified but the timing is abysmal right I mean just nobody can separate you can't really believe. That that this judgeship was awarded on -- detached that nobody even -- aware that there was. That it was James Madison's brother guy they're trying to court for what the official all foolish is not the way. That democracy is most Iran. Okay Jim thanks for calling and by the way just like -- it's gonna be now. With -- think about this he voted no last time this is the congressman not to judge.
He's is opposing any changes vote. Another -- from Utah he's gonna have to go back now. And -- constituents. And bigger look at him with a fishing EI and they're gonna say that you really change your vote because -- were convinced of the merits. Or did you change your vote because your brother got appointed to a judgeship. On the other hand if he doesn't change his vote. Then. He's violated I assume a quid pro quality it's inconceivable. To me that he you know in advance that they offered the brother judgeship. And that. They -- agent who also be nice if you wear those in a must have been some kind of negotiation back and forth otherwise they wouldn't have given him a jump -- price. Mean if he did the -- gets.
There are other deals worked so Matheson is now in plug in an impossible position and the rest of us -- role more suspicious. What happens when you do things that are right. And you try to do things in a way which subverts the will of the American people and one last point in terms of where the people stand. I got an email that lists all the recent polls taken on. And they shall port ranges from 37 to 41 -- one that went out -- than throwing out because. He was not that arrangement on them by eight polls here. Supporters around 37 to 41 and and the opposition range is from. Move. 49 to 55. However you slice it and I'll -- one that I use which is Rasmussen. Because he does likely voters. It's 41% support 56% approach. So the American people are weighing in on it and to have our we'll subverted. Through pay off -- negotiated deals and Brothers being appointed to judgeships. That's that's how important legislation. Should be enacted even if the people supported. Little loan if we stand against your thoughts -- welcome. We're patient bills you back on the other side I'm Bonnie Nelson you're listening to -- how he car program.

Potentially a president of the United States -- the next one. In the meantime we're trying to help bush present endowed in terms of the health care reform proposal. Which he seems to be reluctant to abandon and even reluctant to start over. -- your thoughts are welcome to 8774694322. Is the phone number the email address is a Nelson at wrko.com. Back to the launch now we go to Steve good afternoon Steve. No.
Hey already have it. Your goal. -- then I'm calling you from Canada. And I'd like -- to us educate me because I'm trying to figure out. Why this debate is going this way I just have like a couple questions okay yeah. IRA you know appearing Canada. We spend 9% of our GDP. Gross domestic product on health care and everybody's insurance. Up there where you are. You'd spend 16%. And not everybody -- insured. You know you you say that you don't want like ration health care but from what I understand. HM o.s -- ration health care they tell you what procedures your love of a lot of cases they tell you. What doctors you're allowed to go to in in the system. You know insurance companies will -- appeal. For preexisting. Conditions or you know if if you get a really serious. Disease they might decide not to cover it. So why exactly there are you defending. A system that's based nonprofit. And not on the health of your population.
Let me start -- what you first said Steve and I suggest that you don't fly under false color should because people on your side of the -- have been doing that you're getting tagged for. When you call up and you say. That you just want some information can you really curious that's not true which you called up to do is to argue the other side that's okay. But at least be honest about it because when you're not unless from the get go we get suspicious of everything else Jewish. Now to the substance with regard to the health care argument. Health is in terms of health care. It's always going to be rationed because it's a scarce resource the only question is how which can be done you rationing in Canada to. There are a whole bunch of people have to wait long periods of time begin to see people did you see doctors and medical personnel. And I would ask you the question. If you think your system is so terrific help someone in your prime minister is just came down to the United States when he had a serious medical problem. And how come when I talked to people and I know. Who are Canadian citizens who have spent time here. They tell me that if they have a serious problem. They're much they would much prefer to be treated in the United States rather than Canada where their long waiting lines and inefficient service. And a factory. Assembly line mentality.
Barkley would apple would Danny Williams who's -- premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. First of all if it you know I don't blame you for for not knowing a lot of both Canada both. Newfoundland and Labrador is kind of like a Barack water problems that. These -- it's no it's true it's basically a glorified. Hunting and fishing you.
I don't caddies are part of the Canadian health care system state.
Yeah but if they don't really poor Michael remote. -- that's. What's really small population.
But there are actually the place where your system should work the best that's what you shank I mean in an underdeveloped urban area. Then okay bad but here.
You normally -- that you wanted and totally absurd here is sort of doesn't. If you could come to one of the bigger populations setters like Montreal where I lived. Or Toronto or anywhere else and no we you know why is. If he's if he's a millionaire -- all of a giant cable company UK and he had a Condo in Florida. He needed a procedure is a two million dollar Condo in Florida.
Only going to be -- actually -- tell us -- Steve though so here we are shank diminished wanna clarify until he could afford the best medical care than he could get any could choose the best medical care right.
Well what he decided was he knew he was gonna have to recuperate for a couple weeks after the procedure. So you figured you know what -- have a diamond for -- I don't go hang out of my condolence fitness -- for two weeks and the data like being inter -- Montreal.
worry he told you that but it seems to me that a flower having an important medical procedure. I would rank the procedure a -- where I wanna hang out after the procedure because its most important to get a good procedure. But hanging out is separate. So if you're telling me that somehow he want to fly because his buddies are there any like the water and the beach hello incidentally he's gonna -- a medical procedure they are even though it's not as good as he could get in Montreal or some other urban area in Canada. I would change that this suggests that this well -- guy's got his priority backwards the reality is TI don't think that's what happened. I think -- you went where he could get the best procedure that he could because when your health which involves Steve. Its top drawer and you go for the best care you cat and he voted with his feet. Now if you wanna have your procedures in Montreal that's fine. But it is interesting that high profile guy like that I know it's backwater in you know really consider Newfoundland. Gave they dropped off into the Atlantic you wouldn't wouldn't matter to you. But he did come down here for the procedure that trash has a lot doesn't.
The Olympics. You do X did you watch any of the Olympics from Vancouver. Okay traditionally is thought you saw what one of our Canadian cities look like we're not exactly a Third World country and leaving stated the yard place or Kate Richards as sophisticated as anywhere else is saying maybe in Montreal fire at the heart problems. -- I'm gonna get. Excellent care okay now aren't certain waiting list let's say it's not an emergency liking hip replacement. It might take six months to get instead of in the United States where. You can get it may be and three month or two months like how we did. You may have to have a heart condition or cancer you're getting good care of the net and.
OK Steve I tell you something I know somebody who has cancer. And she was treated first in this country original Canadian -- have lived here for a number of years was treated here and don't Canada. And I -- and by the way politically she's on your side of the she's usually liberal. And I'll talk -- from time to time and and she. Is. Extravagant. In her ambitious of the difference in terms of the the care and the access. It was much better in this country. Now you mentioned a heart attack but he was curious that you talked about hip replaced an enthusiast when you're talking about were not I guess would be called. -- it procedure that you don't actually we have to have. It's interesting to me that you shall cavalierly say you people who walking around in pain you're just walked around in pain for a few months more that's okay. No it's slow life and death initial for a little bit well it's good for the soul and we hearing senator sophisticated we've got money shouldn't take a look at Vancouver. Hold -- next time Evelyn BC gets more Chanel where you. Okay. Two we're eventually.
The matter is okay. Well you know we would love to spend just as much as you 16% of our GDP and I have. Oh I like even better health care this thing is certain there's only a certain amount of money they governments have. So we expand approximately 9%. That's so we can afford and everybody insured. All I'm saying TU is. If if if insurance companies in California raised the rate by like 39%. In one year. Or other states reject terror remember that was 29%. Keeps on going up every year people can't keep -- getting dropped if they lose their jobs they lose their insurance. Don't you think this system needs fixing.
Well yes I think it does need fixing Steve I don't think the fiction that President Obama and the Democrats are offering here is the right way to go and I shortly do not think. That universal health care socialized medicine or single Payer or government control the whole thing whatever terminology one used that would bring it closer to Canada I certainly don't think that's the way to go but I'll tell you this Steve I'm glad you're enjoying things in Canada. And in Montreal and if you think your medical care is peachy keen and -- in the right place. But I'll tell you there are a lot of us who are very suspicious of the government and you of course would never know. How private system would work because once the government hasn't monopoly. You you can't get out and it all -- in Canada if you have a ton of money can you buy better health care.
You know what I I would know how private insurance. Words because Canada. -- private health care. Up until the early nineteen seventies and I remember my parents. Many nights would be crying. Trying to figure out how -- they you know forward. To take me to adopt their when I was a little kids will remember how old war.
Did I tell you look at how well you turned out -- this -- says there -- crying because they couldn't figure out how to get to a doctor somehow. They guy actually these anecdotal stories -- I don't know your background I wish you well and we can trade stories of who did what and and what possibilities there are. But the reality is. That it's people from all over the world come to the United States and one of the reasons that our -- our medical care's expensive is because we can't -- much of it. We have such terrific technology there are lots of things we can do. And unfortunately they cost money. -- you know if you want to have that as your paradigm that's fine that I don't think most people in the United States trust the government deduce which is terrific job. I thank you for the call. -- 774694322. He's a phone number and the reason we don't Russian because we she government in action we she what they're trying to do just to get the bill through why would we trust people. Who are using underhanded techniques to get votes went up president of the United States has to nominate the brother of a congressman to get a vote. We moved on you've got to be suspicious. Of how this guy operates all the way through. What kind of a moral standard is there if he's willing to traffic this way in public -- know what's going on in -- that. These -- the public feels that we know about. There's something very wrong with that and ask for the publishers of the what it's gonna cost. While look at what Medicare has done Medicaid both budgets out of control and for those in the Boston area -- not Montreal Steve that's the best we can do on short notice. We look at the Big Dig you -- a government project that was promised to be two and a half billion dollars it's now twenty billion and counting anybody who believes. That the government numbers are going to be numbers they hold to. I think his -- a Pollyanna beyond what I can accept and noticed that all these numbers come do. And health care I'm a pediatric therapist actually in northern Vermont not -- I'm not my. Montreal where the last caller of copper and I have been in between patient listening to the radio and hearing all about. All of the monkey is not going on and IA has. I'm having a hard time in in containing myself at this point. I think.
Beyond what is this will violence is waiting for you to be uncontained. That's -- go it go to.
Feed -- feeding while I took her Taiwan it. I'm safe something have been -- the last caller he's so -- think I'm sitting here looking at every port. It's caught the wait time alliance it's -- Canadian. Alliant. Specialty societies and I won't go through all of them but some of summer like. That Canadian association of emergency physician and Canadian at this issue radiate radiation oncology. The Canadian medical association but there's thirteen of these groups that maintenance records -- Are on rates well they they establish them. A great I love eighteen weeks from the initial wave barrel. By his family physicians have started treatment. And they found that the majority of patient that he did that -- weak target. Well let me tell you about something cancer care. And and you know we're talking about life and death when it comes to cancer care. And the fact that benchmark was order. Verbal you know radical cancer care first four weeks. I am. Referral to treatment. And they found that. There that the majority of the patients that -- that timeframe.
How much exceeded by business mostly for weeks what did they find the average actually wants.
See -- it doesn't say great. On the one that I'm looking at. Schools for -- thought they say it mean they've they've basically stay here. You know their their findings. Basically are saying that. The wait time promised our specialty services are eating the benchmark and once the banners. And the other. The other thing that they talked about was. Bet that. Their -- numbers don't even include the wait time to get to the Stanley position. And and the fact that nearly five million Canadian dollar can't even get a family possession.
So primary care physician can see why you're upset then the anomaly -- the chance. That you -- because we got about thirty seconds.
I'm just at that hearing about when I heard about this Mathis then true. Voted against the bell and now his brother is getting a judgeship. And I. I'm feeding I just am so angry you know what yeah the monkey business and what happened to our country our founders.
I know -- you know what's even worse he had a shorter wait time for that judge in the people in Canada trying to get to see the doctor. Right.
