Can Ellen O'Brien and John Gonzalez agree on anything? The Natick "Redmen" may soon be history. A group of Native Americans in Natick has taken offense to town's high school mascot, and wants the town stop mocking their heritage. The town is in an uproar, and residents are taking sides. Gonzo says the mascot isn't offensive. Ellen, however, is not so sure.

Frankly. In this time of war and I certainly. Pain he imparts a -- surrender to terror you know you -- That's the kind of fully thought through state let the next problem the overall. I have through the time. The continent all the information for strategic thought magnetic -- period seventy. I'm -- is -- one -- I want god and I want somebody would bring the you know about disease impressing people I'm an independent one of those people who. You know I just cannot -- and -- the difference between noon on news I'd like Americans and you're not just lucky.

A lot of stress.

I think it warm up on Boston's talks vision video succeed.

Welcome back I'm not O'Brien liked -- John Gonzales were keeping alive among.

1 o'clock we are going to cover Valentine's Day and gone those big problem do you celebrated or not we gonna talk about Natick if you're driving around town there and you're seeing signs that say once there -- Redman. Both sides are bumper stickers all around town up and down main street what's going on -- march 25 they'll be of boats to try to keep preserve hang on to the Natick Redmond high school football -- is -- racist do you care. Was the name of the team you played for -- on I bet they're going to put a.

on this until it took -- second term -- the the high school nickname that I went to was the lions that a college it was the musketeers. The now I am. Most -- I'm sorry I'm sorry the explores I want to -- as the guy look like a -- the -- or intimidating note neither none of Lamar but but you know how well I don't know as well. What's going on out Natick I mean do you guys have anything going on out there easily view without needing you just he's dying for something to do. But tell if it's balanced another day in the panic and don't we should do today the training that's.

Hear me -- I'm really torn on this I was being -- and tornado swimmer and feel like -- and I think that a lot of this is massively overblown I mean come -- talked to me about the fighting Irish over there at the Celtics what that indicate everybody expected -- up drinking all the time I mean -- Notre --

Fighting Irish is -- is a perfect example of a -- a you know people always civil there there are no there are no white teams out there that are. Unless you're there rabbis like this he added in New York Yankees you don't you don't see a bunch of New Yorkers up and RG had a Minnesota Vikings.

I'm going Yankees be you know races this is all right iris pretty much -- that I think Pollyanna -- so I'm torn -- are once -- seat. The Indian headdress and the really outrageous caricature that one of the piece of the pro baseball team at -- chief Wahoo with a lot of wind and -- that makes you feel I feel uncomfortable I understand why people are upset now when you say what's going on in Natick. It's a good question because Condo it has changed a lot out -- rates so place where a lot of people stayed their fathers' and grandfather's probably played sports there it's changing it's better for a year real estate values but it's got things like of the globe reported you know a new art sent her yoga studio. A little fashion boutique it's becoming a little bit more yuppie if I have a better word and people are afraid those sensibilities are now. Responsible for this latest it's the white liberal guilt you know here's let me explain it this -- see you say the -- little uncomfortable when you see chief Wahoo of the Cleveland did I say. And as we've explained earlier in the show half Cuban you want to have the fight and Cubans you want to picture Fidel the fight infidels. And -- a big fat cigars okay with that don't expect I do -- let it be great message for the kids you know what Phoenix here's an idea the gonzo is. They detonate on those do that out maybe we could sponsor a team we we have a lot of new -- I needed TVT that's that I had. Our -- wing and we will help you out what do you think of the new names possibilities Natick ragged red hot men and accidents helps -- much -- it volunteers at a cracking up because you don't really want to square -- against -- defensive lineman -- that partly to volunteers -- a Tennessee volunteers progress Kenya that's okay I give -- that and now they want to settle on the native Cox here's the people saying hey that's for the birds and want to take it to a vote at march 25 sixth and 7666868 Allen in gonzo marketing naval -- next.

Europe the world gone politically is schizophrenic -- of the name always struck ought to -- The -- of people that. They've been named after I realized Redman is out of fashion now politically in court for the -- to -- so what's the big deal but it -- was big center for the praying Indians you know we're -- let -- continue with -- that schizophrenia that we -- called the tree the tree.

Now market ever thanks for the call he he pointed out something it's interesting Natick was on to the praying Indian track and it is a woman have receding Anders is quoted in the -- He is also known as -- caring hands her name American name. And she said the continued use of the name is racist note no two ways about it he suggested makes the call themselves the Natick praying Indian tribe and one that would go back. You know did the praying Indians is that really that much better than men while I think indicating your -- faces the problem. Okay again Cuban you want to call them can't people don't thoughts I don't care market to secure the balloting -- out the fighting Irish and Cuban cigar aficionado you know as it.

I like rebels fighting India. My -- link bar and -- and if that's Cheney did it get made at the Indian. There's so that's not a -- Indians no water fight again I have reiterates LS you know. I've spoken to a native American I was working at a job site means -- recently and I asked reviews about it. And like now he says you know they -- they were named. For people they respected people back then didn't name their sporting team -- schools bought. Much more serious that we take it now I mean people ought to remember there right schools aren't but back in the day it -- yet. And that would name their team after something that day out you know lack game or someone that they didn't respect and admiration.

Four but another good point because I go weapon attack on the takes its high school sports very seriously and still does both did Malden high -- and Catholic. And they would not you write it I don't think they would have knowingly what they did is say look these people were warriors defenders of their territory that's what high school sports are about. But in in new age of awareness and how do you feel low when you see Mark the red -- on behalf Tom odd image you know you don't feed they don't show like comparable ice. You know raping and pillaging villages.

No that's true that that unfortunately the tabloid edit the cowboys were I I believe the Indians work more respectable more honorable people that we were way and that time was around.

we're not all complaining about the Dallas Cowboys so basically what we draw the line well thanks for the call Mark what I want to know is. You know so especially here right here in Boston we have a lot of people. Who are big time Celtics. Spoken word or who and allegiance to the Irish guy who are who -- Notre -- aren't fighting Irish great attitudes that we just came out of a -- he just eyebrow -- all -- the -- get ready for -- had not only mean that music -- stereotype -- it -- I -- just -- stereotype with a caricature of a stereotype that area and my friends -- Irish fans Notre Dame fighting Irish fans couldn't like get more they -- that little -- look at hasn't. --

I don't can Greg hey do we know each other. -- graduated yet before you must know me.

We -- actually took a dumb computer class together -- one of those. Troublesome seniors secure future.

Okay we gonna stop -- wish me I got to know what she was like is we were popular about -- the -- LA she likes super hotter she like one of those like cigarette smokers outside president Lawrence -- A popular now what I don't think he's gotten Natick thank you very much but now you're at you to your attorney telling you played football that would have been team that year congratulations.

What it yet we -- a lot of good players but yeah. John -- is -- happening that you have your pride you have we can go back in time all of these remember these names but it was important and it's god evaluated.

We recall that we called them so I would hate -- I will say as some been -- unfolding here with kind of strange being called Quaker.

Although it doesn't even in Pennsylvania quakers -- chased -- out that that's odd because that is the opposite of intimidating -- feel.

My point and what what we like it not be Indian red -- there at this certain connotation that comes up only think about that the next year and they're brave warriors -- fighters stand out not brought aided by a legacy is like that but I. I think the great name and you know to the point that but made a couple of times about what politically correct and what's not I have to be -- what you like but that this was the cause. I'm not trying to have a trying to come up with a way to this ball into.

Rarity is exactly that's what I was saying Scott Booth before we started talking about this topic what are you doing now Natick right now is it just nothing to do -- people sit on their hands wander and you know what I really I really gotta get up and get moving on something hey Scott it's going to a town like vote on March when you vote.

That I will Bocachica and appetite and you talk about what people are doing. This'll be great out -- they're getting better but they're not -- bond that the issue can be passionate about right and it's hard to be passionate in terms -- putting well you know we're we're we're what you want to expand you know pound bonds in terms of voting is it about the school urged a direct -- means.

That's a good point every -- I have friends who thanks for the call Scott and thanks for doing the that memory lane trip down after the golden tornadoes. I have friends my arm closest friends raising young family there and the school funding you move -- for the schools and then -- grapple with school funding -- the entire time and school choice someone's at a closing at a we're talking about that -- it seems to make much sense when neither one of as a native American Indians.

No -- but that's a salient point here I mean what are you gonna get worked up the body can only get worked up about making sure that your kids have. Have blood sports teams that they can join and -- proper equipment and the proper funding for that equipment re going to get all worked up about this name that's been around for very long time and again is a lot of callers appointed out. Just as with the Atlanta Braves the Boston braves before that with the Cleveland Indians and a number of other teams Washington Redskins. These are names that were born from respect there were born from the idea that yes these that that Indians native Americans were proud people --

How elite counter the chief Natick spraying Indian tribal war you know we noticed she caring and she's that the cheap but -- am a descendant of that. Track that made its home and now is -- counter her point that says look I am native American Indian my people were from here and I played that's racist and offensively we sinner while what I would say to her again is that we of the Notre Dame fighting Irish. And no and -- to get used to of the not nobody did you have you have the Notre Dame fighting Irish which as you have noted. Could not be more stereotypical Irish the guy's got his dukes up he looks like he's -- he's had in the bag he's right right wing could barely see straight looks like several wildly different I think they're gonna get a title for -- all down just gonna do one of those who think this. And an otherwise unless the paddy wagon and other racist phrase it's coming by to pick you up what else would you be doing that brought -- on a street corner Steven -- Europe next the balloting -- out.

Morning Europe and I don't eat they were well kinda confusing terms that he you'd say the word racist racist is that the -- least it's not an item it's not that symbol it's not a word and I don't think that. The people who created these terms are even people who use them -- any -- believe that it'll -- white race so the whatever they vast majority it in this block. Are superior to Indians so that the term -- is being drawn rocket the symbol can be derogatory or offensive. If that's the way it was meant but that's not the way it was meant the fact that someone like a couple spent -- you do to the Notre Dame fighting Irish it's offensive to -- That doesn't mean that the person who used the term created meant to be offensive or that the intent is offensive you may be overly sensitive you may have a bias you know it much like got a rape victim might be a lot more. Overly sensitive to someone coming up you know behind them what -- on the shoulder that a normal person what doesn't make the behavior the person a client or what.

Okay do we know but we duty to consider this of one context and that is that a Lotta people Lotta peoples have been discriminated against and a victimized over the -- but in Natick young native Americans and Natick are buried in unmarked graves underneath what is now the town center. They were forced in to sort of like these internment camps and deer island in Boston Harbor. The descendants of those people feel like they're living -- on sacred ground that's now being --

But it -- that's that's perfectly fine but the thing that when the chief -- say -- I'm sorry that you feel that way that is not the intent it was never meant to be intent. If you feel that way -- and I apologize to you but we're not going to change the term because if you what that five or six people and reporting at thirty that you represent. Take a sense that the problem in this country that went a few people take offense. The majority of the people who haven't done anything much like -- in every other racial begin to feel guilty and ashamed that the like tolerance there on the proper responses. Sorry that you take offense but we're not going to change something that we don't mean to be offensive.

Steve -- yep -- Cia brand Qaeda that Steve thanks for the call I think that's a good point the only thing that I think. Might be border line touchy here. Is the term -- I mean if it was the braves -- the Indians be a problem of -- that are -- proud those are proud names is a proud traditions if there was the there was the braves again -- the Indians chiefs or something like that I think it would be it would be less problematic logo and the school committee chairman did say I think by the superintendent and look I don't believe we actually officially sanctioned the use -- that logo that that the -- them and team jerseys it's usually it is like and for Natick Edward redmen across the chest. But now that this low that the use yelling and their booster inept the bumper stickers and T shirts it's up. That is a Rain Man and that's it and basically brought the issue back up does serve as John and Salem you're next with -- on them.

There's others absolutely just -- so sensitive in this whole society that's why you know teachers corrective. Even with purple and -- not read to offend it.

I actually like abuse of a good red pen.

You know -- in eight you know that's not have a winner to lose let's make everything it's I you know -- we've got the wages and -- which. I'm an economic are actually going to my Irish club this morning and you know what I. I'm not offended by is much better by people that actually -- governments signed with does not.

Awesome back got you -- make favorite caller he's an Irish I went back. Irish -- help me out that this is your talking about paganism.

Exactly you should go in the military support what I eat out of -- back to Vietnam which -- it. Amazed at what you talkin' about right all right in -- dog -- other.

Let's hear you are welcome we're that we we will listen to any what I love affect the -- drew -- veteran who's Irish and you are in not offended by the use of Redmond.

thought because. You know the things that's so hard time when I'd get an option on on I'd be -- and I -- I mean I got red hair freckles on a much a stop sign around July.

The any of the iris oh does that does that -- paddy wagon and you.

Nothing expense in north. On that god is like what's garnered congress when they do a witch hunt for steroids in videotapes and use bank. You know do your job urgently but the other taxpayers of putting something on the ballot some initiative about. You know Redman or what about the -- subject angles -- and I can get offended by that.

Irate giants down thanks for listening thanks for the call and for the record both bonds on I believe he should not have ties in baseball even if your little -- Danica are you are connected on and on.

You know I'm surprised that that's Steve from -- and mentioned this earlier but. And break in the town named after the walk yet what seemed an -- to walk.

Want to know -- there are other teams in the same league to basically Brent and set them is that -- that you have a local rebels there's a lot of these authorities is that a picket insult anybody I I get a feeling that the this is in -- thing beyond -- not a not a thing that has anything to do uses that. The name of the team and I agree with some the other callers that that's not an insult the American means Indians this as a way to compliment them by using these titles for the --

Thanks for the call Dan. God's on our tuchman on the break about compromises and some residents have suggested keeping the name -- think it -- guns they couldn't keep the name. Drop the use of the native American imagery that means the yeah caricature -- of the red based. And other Massachusetts towns such as data and the when he just mentioned. They worked it out like that so high school students say that's a viable choice that you take that which is seems curious to me because I.

Thank looking at this logo here just it's picture and looks like most Indiana -- chief logos with. With an indium or native American wearing the typical native American headrest and it to me doesn't look offense and I think in the closest thing that you get. To being offensive is beneath. So why would you just changed names like Indians chiefs or something like that are or one of the more indigenous tribes here in Massachusetts you keep the proud tradition Arab he's happy and they got.

Well and that's what he says and he -- this NE SP and you have an image of memory -- dedication and it that you get sentimental about the idea of running through the redmen banner so that they do want to keep the name people are really attached to keep the name and see that as. Really interfering with their right. They've always played under that name -- have -- wanted to get rid of their teacher at level it wasn't -- they'll do it and that is how Wellesley and Dedham came to a compromise on this
